This would be a great statement if Cyborg did spend the entire time on his ass. But he was constantly getting up, chasing Brandon across the mat and shooting for takedowns. Ryron Gracie neutralized Andre Galvao in Metamoris 1 by playing a conservative bottom game and threatening with sweeps. Schaub neutralized Cyborg by avoiding contact for 15 out of the 20 minutes. Gracie was using BJJ to stop BJJ. Schaub used running to stop BJJ.

I saw that fight and Brendan was wasting everyone's time by being there. Cyborg is correct that you have to come to fight, not just shut down your opponents game. In terms of jiu jitsu that means moving forward and passing the guard, or if your on bottom going for sweeps, or attacking the legs, or going for submissions. I can't remember but I think Brendan didn't even shoot for a take down once! That's pathetic. I can see why Cyborg was frustrated.

So Cyborg sits down all match with one plan: Get opponent to dive into a modified half guard. When that doesn't work, he completely mails in the match and blames opponent for not wanting to fight? Schaub is a brown belt, this is no secret. If you expected him to put on a clinic against one of the top grapplers in the world, you're delusional. The reality is, the better grappler mailed in the match when faced with an opponent that wouldn't dive limb first into his guard. The match sucked for sure, but Cyborg doesn't get a pass on that, he lied there for twenty minutes and was 100% stifled by a brown belt, for shame.

I'm defending Schaub because he came in as a barely brown belt against one of the very best black belts in the world, and the black belt was just waiting for Schaub because he is a one trick pony with very little offensive Jiu Jitsu. I don't think anyone expected something spectacular from Schaub, but they certainly didn't expect Cyborg to sit on his ass and do nothing all match. This one is on Cyborg, the clearly superior Jiu Jitsu practitioner who wouldn't engage.

Schaub more people would respect you if you would have tapped-out to a submission and tried to grapple, rather than "shut him down!" The concept of Metamoris is to enable competitors to submit their opponent and "go for it" without fear of losing by points. The reason people in the crowd boo is because you were passive, did not engage and (yes Cyborg was right), when he stood up to take you down you walked/ran back towards those red lines.

That Gracie Acadamy mindset of "not losing" first and foremost is a thin line. On one hand, I understand the concept and accept it as a legit form of defense, but on the other hand, the Metamoris mat is NOT the street. People took time off work or other things and paid for a ticket to see sport and spectacle, not a dude protecting his public image, nor a defense seminar. The one thing you learn to let go of in BJJ is your ego. Brendan still has a lot to learn, IMO.

If Abreu only knows how to sit down and tornado roll all day. Why is it only on Brendan to go in? Why isn't Cyborg attacking into Brendan? Brendan did a more tactical job imho. If Cyborg wanted a fight, then it's not only on his opponent to bring it. Or am I totally in the wrong?

My thoughts exactly, they both wasted time and neither of them really engaged. Schuab never denied he was in over his head, he went in with one game plan against an opponent who should have man handled him, but instead Cyborg laid in wait on his back... In the end, it was a style and game plan stale mate and a bad match up.

Schaubs game plan was stuffing tornado guard and waiting for a mistake he could take advantage of. Cyborg's was tornado. Neither deviated from the game plan. BJJ is both offense and defense and both of them refused to change their game plan. If anything I think cyborg is more at fault for a boring match. Its like me getting mad at someone for continually slipping in their hand to defend a collar choke before I can tighten it for 20 min. If its not working you have to move to something else.

So basically Schaub didn't care about winning, he just didn't want to lose. I agree with Cyborg. Just stay home if you're not going to bring it. That's how we honor our opponents. Imagine if we all played Schaub's strategy. Schaub was also disrespectful and dishonest at the interview.

Schaub agrees to a grappling only match in which he doesn't need to win to get all of the money his is being paid. He then decides that he doesn't really want to grapple. He is just there to "shut down" his opponent by running from any chance that there might be any real amount of actual grappling. Then he claims that he accomplished his goal because he didn't get tapped. Congratulations on doing nothing Schaub. The bottom line is that he never should have been there in the first place.

So Cyborg broke his foot the week before this match, and he still showed up? That guy is the man. I don't understand why Schaub didn't try. He could have just tried, lost, and still had the respect of everyone. What was the point of surviving in a submission-only match? Brendan's red herring about the crowd influencing the competitors into making mistakes is just plain insulting. I hope he realizes that these are all grappling fans who only watch grappling because they understand what's going on. They didn't wander into metamoris like jagoffs, like him. He has the most fragile ego I've ever seen. I saw this tournament once where a white belt accidentally put himself in the black belt division. His friends looked at the roster and saw that he drew against Leandro Lo. They told him that he was basically dead meat. He didn't even know who Lo was. When they told him, he said oh well, screw it, gonna give it a shot anyway. He was decimated, but he got so much respect for GIVING IT A SHOT! I had no opinion of the guy before but now I see he's got such a douchey personality, I can't help but dislike him. Oh well. Good luck reaching for your soul when you get knocked out in your next match, Schaub!

All due respect... I wouldn't fight Brendan, but I don't think Rener/Ryron's idea of "shutting him down" meant running away. You never see a fight where someone doesn't actually grapple in a grappling match, and call it "shutting the other guy down." Last year Rener used a survivalist technique, but it was 20 minutes of straight jiu jitsu defense. This was not that.
