Earth Rocks!

Earth Rocks!

Күн бұрын

For an introductory college-level physical geology class: a review of how the basic processes processes and products of metamorphism including comparisons of the pressure, temperature, and fluid conditions found in different metamorphic settings: subduction zones, colliding continents, deep burial, and in contact with magma chambers or hydrothermal fluids. Discusses clues found in a rock that tell us which setting and which grade a rock was subjected to, including a review of index minerals.
**This video comes near the middle of the semester, so there may be terms with which the audience is unfamiliar. In fact, it is recommended that you watch this video only AFTER watching Identifying Minerals, Identifying Igneous Rocks, and Identifying Sedimentary Rocks. This video reviews ALL those rock types and discusses how they transform into a new metamorphic rock. It can be overwhelming if you start first with this video. For a full playlist, refer to the Geology playlists on the Earth Rocks! KZbin Channel.
Content within this video is based on information available in any standard introductory college geology textbook (or lab manual), such as Essentials of Geology -- Tarbuck and Lutgens -- Pearson Publishing.

The "garnet" sample shown here is actually sphalerite
@EarthRocks
@EarthRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Sphalerite has a similar crystal form to garnet (dodecahedron), so they can look similar, but sphalerite has cleavage planes, while garnet does not. The true test is hardness. Sphalerite is 3.5-4 on the hardness scale, while garnet is 8.
