As funny and theatrical as this is, my main takeaway was the fascinating indeterminacy. You never can know just what the timbre will be after the next hammer blow, but the melody remains recognizable throughout, even as the instrument literally falls apart.

My band teacher showed us this video in class yesterday & I felt so many emotions all at once. It was funny, shocking, cool, and my middle-class self couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that someone would destroy an expensive instrument in purpose. I was so overwhelmed I almost cried 😂

As a composer this is very intereseting! As an instrumentalist this is a mix of interesting (as a challenge of playing gradually with less and less resources and having to be creative with it) and sad because of the trumpet.

Good intonation on trumpet at Section A, but deteriorating quickly. Excellent performance throughout by percussion, but progressively let down by trumpet section who sound increasingly unwell.

When Gainsbourg burned a 500 F bill in front of the cameras, he had made an important donation the next day to associations fighting against misery. Too many organizations struggle to entrust instruments to children who have no means ... This trumpet could have served one of them. I hope that the protagonists of this shocking video will be keen to help one of these associations acquire some instruments for children from disadvantaged areas. Quand Gainsbourg avait brûlé un billet de 500 F devant les caméras, il avait dès le lendemain fait un don important à des associations qui luttent contre la misère. Trop d'organismes luttent pour confier des instruments à des enfants qui n'ont pas de moyens... Cette trompette aurait pu servir à l'un d'eux.
