Baroque turmpet is extremely difficult to control without valves and he had handled it perfectly well, both accurately and beautifully played. What a hero !

Small fun trivia: That's a natural trumpet, not a baroque trumpet. They didn't have baroque trumpets in the Baroque era; they only had natural trumpets. The baroque trumpet is an invention of the late 20th century. Baroque trumpets don't have valves, but they do have a finger hole, or sometimes a key. They're an intermediary solution for players who want a more authentic historical sound, but who haven't mastered the extremely difficult art of playing a true natural trumpet. Natural trumpets are extremely rare, but are becoming increasingly more popular since the 2010s.

@lawrencequave73612 жыл бұрын
Folks, it doesn't take a lot of air to play a brass instrument, whether piccolo trumpet or tuba or sousaphone--otherwise the largest instruments would be unplayable. The sound is produced ENTIRELY by lip vibration against the mouthpiece--and that is affected CONSIDERABLY more by the STRENGTH of the muscles of the mouth and lips than by air volume. The largeness/size (volume) of the instrument affects its tone, deep or high. The length of the tubing (whether by sliding--as with a trombone--or by valves--as with the other instruments) affects the pitch of the notes. That's why a brass player NEEDS to play pretty much EVERY day or he gradually loses muscle control--which means after a several days off your playing is going to suck--certainly with respect to endurance. Uneven front teeth will GREATLY negatively affect a brass player's playing ability, too. All that combined makes brass instruments probably the hardest to learn to play and continue to play. Oh, BTW: I LOVED this piece and the trumpeter's playing of it. (Contrast this with bagpipes. If you don't keep that bag full of air and continually press on it, IT AIN'T PLAYIN'.)
@thelad94342 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencequave7361You misunderstood the original commenter. To play a brass instrument well, one must practice air control. Any professional trumpeter will tell you that it is all in controlling the air. Yes, the lip vibrations are what makes the instrument work, but that is not what the original commenter was referring to 👍🏼.
@lawrencequave73612 жыл бұрын
@@thelad9434 I understand and agree with your comment about air control as I have been playing a trumpet myself for over 60 years. In fact, you helped me make my point in that it is not air volume or velocity that makes a brass instrument's sound. Otherwise, playing a tuba or a sousaphone truly would be impossible. I learned this on my very first encounter with a brass instrument at 11 years old when I took the bugle I had just bought out of its box, put it to my lips, and blew. NOTHING happened. Suddenly I realized, "there's gonna be a lot more to this than I thought." In any case, it's great that we both love brass music such as we've heard here. I appreciate your comment. Thanks.

Amazing performance! Julian played the natural trumpet masterfully, and in the true baroque style by holding the trumpet with one hand, and not using the crutch of nodal tuning holes. He also used a rather large mouthpiece, similar to the one depicted in the painting of Bach's first trumpeter Gottfried Reiche. Beautiful tone, so rich and full! Bravo to you all for such a spectacular rendition of this work!
@eliasmerki3845 Жыл бұрын
Why do you know that holding it in one hand is the true way of playing? Do you have photos made in the 18th century?
@emilianoturazzi Жыл бұрын
@@eliasmerki3845 there are as many paintings as you want: you just need to google "baroque trumpet paintings" - I have nothing against the holes, but, actually in the baroque period they didn't have any... and the real point would be to play without them in this way. it's very difficult dangerous for intonation especially according to our modern standards (probabily quite different from ancient ones...) so many performers, most performers, prefer to use the holes...
