To be fair Kuro overcompensated by allowing every random encounter be easily beatable in action mode allowing players to swiftly grind with no drawbacks, but still be forced to fight most bosses solely in turn-based mode making players in Japan complain at the sudden 180* combat being too difficulty because their bumrush tactics completely fell apart once bosses forced them to pay attention to the skills characters could use beyond healing. This game implies you can attempt to fight any enemy with pure action, but implies that stronger enemies will only stagger so much before wrecking you giving the impression they unless your level/gear strong enough you won't be any to kill basic enemies unless your stats are strong enough to quickly kill them anyways in a turn-based setting.@@tommypham5299

SMTV definitely did not deliver on story, and had writing issues caused by time constraints making the script rough, yeah, but on exploration/gameplay and soundtrack/animation plus overall atmosphere it definitely exceeded expectations for me. Now that Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is releasing on modern consoles and PC performance issues should be gone, image quality improved a lot and the new route/story looks like a promising improvement, very excited for it. @@Brian-jv8iy

SMT V : V? I mean, it isn't just the "Royal" thing of P5 but for SMT V? I dislike this bc you got, as a fan, SMT V (or P5) and then, you have to full pay again to get what? Like 20% somethin' new.. In fact, it's DLC but worse. When P6 and SMT VI will come, i wouldn't be like "Ok but should i rather wait 2 years to get this ++version ?". I Love Atlus and MegaTen but c'mon.. Considering its a whole new IP, more focused on a political and philosophical setting and also in a fantasy setting this is fantastic. Its Atlus 35th anniversary project and a culmination of all their experience and know-how accumulated over the years, a contrast with Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, a very welcome breath of fresh air.

The story would have made an excellent Fire Emblem title ngl due to the political and just the fact that you have to build up your support (or army). Also the battle skip reminds me of earthbound skip feature which is a nice Qol, but know its from persona devs, bet the battles wont be as long do.

The battle system reminds me heavily of Trails Through Daybreak (Kuro no Kiseki), where it's also a hybrid of ARPG and turn-based RPG. You start off in Action Phase, where the battle is done in ARPG style, but you're limited to just basic attacks. You can kill lower-leveled enemies by just hacking them, but higher-leveled enemies can't be easily defeated, so you attack them to build up the stun gauge, and when it's full, you can stun the enemies and activate Command Phase, changing the battle system to turn-based where you can fully access your Arts, and giving you first-turn advantage.

Yeah the focus on a more mature, political, philosophical and fantasy settings is looking great. I definitely missed the mature/darker themes and atmosphere of the older games... Really getting tired of the usual teenager party members and school settings haha, not against it but its time for something different. Catherine was also a pretty fun and different/interesting new IP they created with adult and relatable characters!
