13:38 Don't put that log through the chipper lol. Love the winterscapes of the Midwest, this is one of my favorite times of year to cut trees. Something mystical about a tree hitting the ground when everything else is quiet, and it echoes through the woods. I think the cold helps me work too..

Nice job Spencer. Happy New Year. How’d your chestnuts do? I had some that grew 4’ this year. A foot above my 5’ tubes.
@metaspencer3 күн бұрын
Happy 2025! We have a good number of chestnut trees peaking out of their tubes, making me think about fencing that area in (to keep deer from nibbling). But that would be a lot of fence ... I think we have 100 planted at this point in that area. Sounds like yours are taking off!
@nhmountains56833 күн бұрын
You could try paper bud capping the tips. It works with conifers. A small piece of paper folded over the tip and then stapled. I’m not sure on oaks and chestnuts. If you can keep the deer off them next spring they should put on a foot of growth to pop up above deer browse height.
@metaspencer3 күн бұрын
@@nhmountains5683 that foot is what I'm looking for! :)
@nhmountains56833 күн бұрын
You could get some more tubes. Cut them 18” and slide them inside the tubes with the chestnuts sticking out. I think they’d hold up ok. They would be cheaper than fencing your orchard. I did buy some rolls of 6’ 2x4” wire when it was on sale at Home Depot and cut some 2’ diameter cages. I used those for some chestnuts. It was cheaper until the price went up so I have a mixture of both. I planted some Allegheny Chinkapins too. They produce a single pea sized chestnut per bur that are good for wildlife.
