The old ways! The best ways! How I miss the old days too! Daddy told me similar stories of how they harvested their various crops on Great Great Grandpa's big farm in Sharon SC. Later they moved up to Kings Mountain NC, after the depression to get work in the textile mills after the bank took their farm and general store eventually. Great Great Grandpa's books showed how he had given credit to all the folks in the community to help them survive during and after the depression when the bank took everything they had. Thank you for sharing this Justin! God is so Good!

Good to see you Justro. My father used cut the headlands with the scythe without the cradle. Cradles werent used in our area. Cutting the headlands made way for the reaper and binder machine. My mother used bind the sheaves exactily like you do. Hard work, respect for the crop and the end result worth it. All the best Justro From Paddy in Ireland.

Now I'm wondering how much wheat you would need to scythe to get enough to last you until the next harvest for an average family? And then think about doing that in July, in the southeastern heat and humidity! Well, it's got to be better than digging stumps by hand! But you were moving right on along through that stand! I regret I can only "Like" once!

My Grandpa Ike Randolph from down Higgins told me that he had wheat that would almost touch his face when he cradled it. Him and his brothers would work around other farms cradling wheat or oats for 25cents a day for all three of them. His dad Turner had a mill at the mouth of hog branch.
