I know this is a little mawkish, but watching this video confirms for me what a universal language jazz, and music more broadly, truly is. The tune was written by a couple of Americans (from Missouri and rural Wisconsin), arranged by an LA guy with ties to Stan Kenton, and played here by a German orchestra. The fervor on the faces of the guitarist and other players shows you they "get" this music, in their own way, sure, but with no less passion than the composers themselves. What an exceptional tune, chart, performance, and band. Bravo!!

A great performance by a superbly modern early 21st century big band playing still modern late 20th century music by whom I believe to be jazz's greatest ever composer-Pat Metheny.

i consider the album from which the original tune comes from to be probably my fav piece of recorded music ever because ive been listening to it pretty much i was a baby, hence ive spent 20+ years avoiding any cover or iteration on these tunes which for me are just not to be messed around with. but this was super fun, in all honesty. Lyle Mays would approve, god rest his soul!

5:09 Love how the bassist responds to the trumpet player!
@waynewright50232 жыл бұрын
@ #fabass The person to whom the bass player is "responding" (or echoing) is playing a soprano saxophone, not a trumpet..
For lovers of this underplayed tune, check out the song 'Loca' by Buika, where she repeatedly scats this riff in hommage to the PMG.

I really enjoyed listening to this, but I really miss the driving rhythm of the original. The more laid back swing of this arrangement loses the unique feel of the original tune.

Das Orchester hat einen tollen Sound, ich vermisse jedoch die Energie und den Flow der Originalkomposition. Liegt möglicherweise am etwas lustlos arrangierten Schlagzeug.
