The WDR BIG BAND plays the concert "Hargrove Grooves" together with the American jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove (Leverkusener Jazztage, 2007). Most of these pieces of music were written during the very creative period of his band THE RH FACTOR - Michael Abene arranged the pieces for the WDR BIG BAND. Went to Arts Magnet with Roy, knew then that he was going places...Saw him perform in the cafeteria during lunch, with Wynton Marsalis. 10 years later, caught him in a club on 6th street in Austin, told him I went to arts with him, ended up hangin with him in the back of the club on some old beat up couches...He smoked some Ganj, and we partied till 5 am, he played an old beat up piano and we had so much fun. I told him I sang, and he prompted me to sing: “Reunited” (peaches and herb?) I didn’t know the words, so I blew that, hahaha. I was sad to hear of his passing.. Side: Erykah Badu went there when we did too, Arts Magnet...

Roy wird hier meiner Meinung nach vom Orchester weder wahrgenommen noch geachtet, was sehr schade ist, da dieser Musiker ein enormes Gefühl vermittelt. Die Konstellation scheint mir denkbar ungünstig. Diverse Versuche eines gemeinsamen Solos mit dem Saxmann klingen wie ein altes Ehepaar, das sich schon lange nicht mehr versteht. Spätestens dann sollten Musiker und Eheleute nicht noch lauter werden sondern mal zuhören, was das Gegenüber zu bieten/sagen/spielen hat.

Its Roy Hargrove, not much left to say...not to mention his predecessors, but did like Heiner's short alto solo on the last track 'Family' (a King Super 20 I think?), would like to have heard more from him, love the sound/tone of an ebonite mouthpiece on an older saxophone..
