This guy and Akaza really are perfect opposites. Akaza is a hot blooded, extremely violent and passionate guy who ultimately became a demon due to experiencing true dispair in his life. Doma meanwhile is a litterally cold blooded, aloof guy who couldn't give a shit about anything and became a demon purely because he was bored. Nice contrast.

My favorite part about the character is how he’s similar to shinobu. They both put on a kind and cheerful visage, when underneath that they are both sadistic and manipulative at points. The interesting thing about her character is that she never agreed with her sister on demons but feels a need to keep her view of them alive, so she begrudgingly tries to “befriend” them. But unlike doma, she doesn’t hold on to a delusion that it’s actually the right thing, rather she perhaps knowingly or unknowingly uses her memory of kanae, in both her beliefs on demons and how she died, as an excuse for her sadism towards them.

His ethics were misguided by his parents in his young age since he was not raised normally, the partners, as you said, just used him. His judgment towards what is good or bad was twisted and he didn’t know that at all. Throughout the story, we can see he really thought what he did was an act of “kindness” (eating people so they can live eternally with him). When he finally felt something, it was before his death. i really like the fight with douma. shinobu: finally expresses her bottled up anger towards the demon that took her sister. she successfully, after death, takes him down. kanae: she was psychologically broken from abuse as a child. she couldn’t cry when kanao died and she felt guilty for it. she didn’t talk and it seemed like she had no emotion but she simply couldn’t express herself properly. she couldn’t even speak or think for herself. in this battle, she acknowledges that she has feelings and is more human than ever. the psychological string that was one broken was repaired during this fight. inosuke: he repeatedly believed he wasn’t human. he didn’t remember who his mother was so he believed he didn’t have a human mother but rather an animal. in every near death experience, (eg the spider father), he remembered someone telling him to keep living and falling off a cliff. he didn’t know who said it but it’s there as comfort and encouragement. shinobu would make pinky promises with him. he thought he had met shinobu before bc he remembered someone telling him about pinky promises beforehand. he didn’t know who it was though. douma revealed everything about his mother. his mother would sing a song about pinky promises. she loved inosuke so much but she dropped him from a cliff, apologizing and begging him to survive the fall. she was killed by douma shortly after. douma acknowledged she was a very beautiful woman with a kind and gentle personality. inosuke puts all his broken memories together and finds his humanity. all of these realizations bc of a true psychopath. someone who never felt emotions even as a human. someone who “wasn’t” human.

Doma I would say is a lot like Obanai in many ways. Main differences was how he was reared. Doma was essentially raised in great luxury as a young cult leader/messiah. When you spend pretty much your entire childhood, and young adulthood basically being treated like a God for your eyes and hair on top of a natural inhibition to feel emotional. He is essentially immune to feeling guilt, fear, pain, remorse, or even satisfaction for very long.

Actually, your point on him helping people genuinely makes sense still. Psychopaths usually have their variant of love or a twisted expression of it.
@kathycoleman4648 Жыл бұрын
Yes, this. It isn't that Douma has no feelings or desires or ways of expressing himself. Rather, it's that all of those things come out in ways that the average person either wouldn't understand or would find abhorrent. 1. Turning Daki and Gyutaro: to us as humans that's nightmarish because it means two more demons trying to eat us. To Douma or Muzan it means two more demons in their ranks. To Gyutaro and Daki it meant another chance at life. 2. Douma enjoyed Kotoha's company and intended for her to life out her full lifespan. Her finding out that he was a demon was a tragedy. And he even tried to reason with her, but she grabbed Inosuke and fled. He obviously couldn't have a woman running around and telling people that the leader of a local religious organization was a demon. So while we obviously think its wrong, he did what he felt was necessary. 3. His borderline desperation to befriend the other upper moons at the meeting at the start of season three is almost palpable. Good or evil, it's easy to see that he does feel solitude. It's also easy to see that he doesn't gel with people by how Gyokko reacts to how Douma is using the vase he gave him, and how it's after he talks about keeping a woman's face in a jar that Akaza decks him.

One sad thing about Doma is he could've lived a simple life where he could learn the gist of emotions and maybe even feel them. But his parents really did a number on him and because of them, he grew not learning about virtues but instead lies. His parents created a bad example to him and he lived that example. He had too many responsibilities as a child and nobody understands him. His parents were really bad role models and that's why Doma had no freedom to decide truly for himself.

I personally feel like as much as Dōma is an asshole. The narrative people drive of him having no tragic backstory at all is completely ridiculous. When he was born every second of every day of his life he was forced to attempt to fix other peoples problems, all the while being warshiped as a messenger of god. It is my belief that he wasn't detatched from his emotions from birth, but he was forced to grow detatched from them due to his circumstances. All the while knowing everything he was feeding them was a load of complete bullshit and having to keep up the act because its all he has ever known. Looking at Dōma as a character my second time reading through the manga I honestly feel he has one of the saddest backstories of any of the demons. I also believe, were he born under different circumstances that he could've actually been a good person. All the way until the end of his life he was never allowed to feel a true emotion until he fell in love with shinobu, and maybe even started to regret what he had done.
@Devorador_de_sonhos26 күн бұрын
No, it is clear from the beginning of Douma's origin that he has no feelings, not because of the situation he lived in, he was simply born that way. He found the people who saw him in search of divine salvation as pathetic, at no time did Douma give the impression that he felt forced to do what he did, even because he had no appreciation for his parents to feel the need to do that for them. Douma is simply a demon who does not have a tragic past, he is a terrible person and that's it.
@lorddragonskin36033 жыл бұрын
Doma kinda reminds of Doma/Duma (very ironic I know) from Fire Emblem Gaiden/SoV. Long story less short, Duma's a divine dragon (a very specific race of dragons in the FE canon) whose cult basically worships strength to the point of losing all form of kindness and love. As time passed on however, both him and his cult became degenarate: Duma due to his longevity (dragons go crazy after some millenia pass in FE canon), and his Faithful in recurring to sacrificing their souls or even those of other people (remember no kindness?) becoming Arcanists, Cantors or Witches that can use Dark, Reanimation and Summoning magic. Of yeah, almost, forgot to say... Duma (Dragon) is also basically invincible to anything, just like Doma (Demon) is basically invincible. He is weak to two things though: the Valentian Falchion (a dragon slaying sword passed down by, ironically, Duma's lineage) [Nichirin Blades] and the Nosferatu spell (a life draining spell, coded to always have a fixed hit rate, which overlooks the coding that prevents everything else from hitting Duma; that later became canon in SoV, intentionally built in this time) [Wisteria Poison].

Douma clearly had never had a friend before and obviously wouldn't know what a real friendship feels like and he did show some interest in trying to hang out with the other upper moons be it gyokko hantengu or even nakime. It's not outside the realm of possibility he defined akaza as his best friend even knowing how much akaza hated him

Doma is a weird case where he's utterly contemptible, not because he's genuinely malicious, but because he's generally so apathetic to everything around him that we as human beings can only describe him as evil because he's so divorced from our concept of morality that nothing else is really applicable; he is not good, he feels nothing for his actions, and those actions are almost universally negative to those around him, so he HAS to be evil. And while his ending is cathartic because he finally gets his comeuppance for everything he's done, there's a weird sense of charm and hope to Doma being greeted by Shinobu and discovering the afterlife, because he's finally found this wondrous place that he's only ever heard stories about from people who never went there. And his excitement towards seeing Shinobu and genuinely wanting her to tour Hell with him demonstrates that he really isn't evil, because not only is he not upset, he's grateful to Shinobu for this new experience she's given him. And it also kind of undermines the finality of their relationship, with Doma practically teasing her with his childish wonderment and Shinobu having to accept that they're both already dead so inevitably she's going to have to learn to live with his etetnal existence and his newfound feelings for her; even if she drops him in Hell and moves on to Heaven, she's going to have to spend eternity dreading the idea that Doma is pining for her and that he might inevitably atone for his sins, gaining the opportunity to follow after her into Heaven or into the cycle of reincarnation. Her consternation with the idea of Doma being happy mirrors the feeling some readers finding Doma, a character who by all rights should be an utterly contemptible bastard that you live to hate and see suffer, becoming bizarrely likable and adorable.

I've been posting Douma stuff here lately because I thought he's a very underrated character as opposed to his upper moon buddies above or below him. When we talk about character backgrounds of the UMs in KnY, the fandom often cite Koku and Akaza as some of the most well done and tragic, even Daki and Gyutaro's. So this post is about giving love to the character back ground of our resident gorgeous cult leader, Douma. With that said, I often see the fandom brush off Douma's background, stating that it's not really "sad" or interesting and usually overlooked because of Douma's lack of emotions, but I think his story is quite sad and tragic. One might think: "Well Douma lived a lavish life, he wasn't poor and he even was worshipped so it isn't really bad right?". I personally don't think so. Douma, from the moment he was born, was abused and taken advantage of, his platinum blonde hair, rainbow eyes and angelic face seemed like a blessing, but in reality was a curse. Because of his physical oddities, his parent's greed was amplified, Douma was seated as the leader of a cult at a very young age, a child that couldn't distinguish between right or wrong yet his very occupation was to be a mediator for the thousands of members of the cult, listening to their problems, their agonies every single day. The heaviest responsibility was put on his shoulder from the get go. It didn't help that Douma, aside from his otherworldly physical appearance, was bestowed with extreme intelligence (this was also shown with his fight against Shinobu, Inosuke and Kanao; but that's another story), he was aware of the intentions of the people around him, he knew that their admiration and faith in him was for self-fulfilment and selfish reasons, his parents were fake people and so were the people around him; but Douma still beared and listen to their daily whinings. His father was involved in adultery with the females of the cult, his mother was a bat-shit crazy woman that eventually killed his father. These negative things that happened to Douma further explained why he lack sympathy and empathy and why he didn't bother actively seek them, he didn't believe that the world was fair and that the people who do bad things could get away and live to the fullest. The world was unfair. There's no good or bad karma, and heaven nor hell didn't exist. Hence, while he was a cult leader, he never developed a God complex, but instead was ironically an "atheist". Douma couldn't develop emotions and bond to people because he wasn't shown any in his lifetime, he was just a tool for his parents and followers, and Douma knew it very well but he was fine with it. It's sad that it took Shinobu's genuine hatred and anger for Douma to finally feel SOMETHING. Douma could've turned out to be a completely different person had he met someone like Shinobu who, instead of hatred, harbored genuine love and kindness for him during the times when he was still a human.

honestly, I kind of love Doma, mostly because I feel like I can relate somewhat. at least once per month, but never more than twice, I'll tend to have a full mental breakdown, where my mind analyzes the feelings I'm feeling from my body reactions alone. this causes me great distress, but even then, at my core, I feel apathy. it's horrifying, and scary, and to live like that for my entire life would be terrible. honestly, Doma is one of the most tragic characters in Demon slayer. even though he's a bastard. a child, living a meaningless existence, denied what we all feel, DESPERATELY wanting to understand what it is to feel anything but absolute apathy. It's so indescribably sad to me. Those days where emotion doesn't reach my brain are the worst days in my life. Imagining living my whole life like that is my worst nightmare. Just, meaningless, helpless, going through the motions because I have to. helping people because I want to, but never deriving any satisfaction from it. knowing I'm excited or stressed by thinking: "oh wow, my heart rate sped up back there, how interesting, I must be excited" and anything else. It scares me. hell on earth, that's what I'd call it. goddamn, poor Doma. doesn't excuse anything he did, but still. poor Doma. whatever Icy hell he's canonically in will probably be heaven on earth compared to his actual life, if it truly makes him feel.
@marocat47493 жыл бұрын
He is a bastard , but its really sad how unlike others he was doomed from the start, and his parents did give him the worst possible thing you give to a child, power over a cult, and not letting him figure out on his terms emotions.

Honestly Doma didn't feel evil to me in a traditional sense because he quite frankly couldn't understand the concept. From birth he lacked feeling & empathy, born into a twisted cult that warped his world view, when he encountered Muzan & became a demon it almost lined up too perfectly with what he understood of the world. He seemed doomed for the role of a demon from the start, but even while as a demon he tried to fulfil the wishes of his followers, in his own distorted way of bringing them the paradise they so desired. Most of those he fought literally had little concept of grasping his 200+ year old built up indoctrinated from birth viewpoint, not that they cared to try much. When Kanao calls him out for his lack of emotions it felt rather hypocritical in a way, if Kanao met Muzan in her husk state instead of her adoptive sisters, she very easily could've ended up just like Doma, perhaps even worse of a demon then him. Furthermore there's a point in the story where Doma could've literally changed the outcome of the entire story in favor of the demons, all on a mere whim. When the upper moons are called to a meeting Upper Moon 2 Doma offers to go with his fellow Upper Moons to assault the forge village. If they didn't interrupt & deny him, it's highly likely their attack would've been a massive success. Eliminating the forge, killing a few pillars, wounding or killing Tanjiro & possibly even capturing Nezuko.

An interesting aspect of Doma's character is that he is one of very few demons to truly remember life as a human. There's no haze or confusion about "before," and he never had a personality change like most demons did. He just.. stayed the same. Living like he always did in his eternal paradise cult. It didn't make a difference to him if he was human or demon.

I really hate when people call Douma a psycopath, because having dificulty felling emotions don't make you a psycopath. Douma never acted vilely as a human, he literally lived his whole life for others to a point he didn't had his own indentity. If killing and eating people without felling sorry make you a psycopath so every demon is a psycopath, Douma had a twisted view of life and believed that eating people was a way of saving then, and he preferes to eat women because he thinks they're more nutritious not because he hates women or think they're weak

Great video. I think this was needed since he is misunderstood and only hated for killing Shinobu but you should also make one about Muzan. This is an unpopular opinion but I feel like he is a good villain and not as bad as some people think. People only say he has a trash backstory compared to upper 1,3 and his reasons for his actions are trash but then again I think he doesn’t need any reasons. He is written to be hated, describes himself as a natural disaster and is a sadistic and egotistical which works pretty well in my eyes. Sure the tentacle spam is pretty whack but aside from that it’s really refreshing to see someone as brutal and sadistic as him again and somehow he kinda reminds me of other villains that have similar personalities like Frieza from Dragonball for example. I love how he just refuses to die and you see how everyone hates him and prepared their entire lifes just to take this heartless monster with 0 humanity in him down. I don’t want to go too deep into it but I think you get the point and the only thing that disappoints me about Muzan is how we don’t know That much about him despite him being over 1000 years old.

One thing people don't notice about Doma is that he's not dumb, he's not just arrogant, he's a mastermind. People are mad at h for killing Shinobu with no feelings for killing her at all, and what do you expect? He's not like Akaza, he's Upper Moon 2, where he is himself. A lot of people hate him for not being able to feel emotions, cam you blame him though? He was born like that, he didn't choose to have that condition. But the main thing that people forget about him is that he's not dumb, he's not stupid. He's a tactical manipulative mastermind, where he puts a fake smile and a contented face not only to fake his emotions, but to also mislead his opponents, making them think that he's just a emotionless nobody, I think that's very clever, he uses his disadvantages as advantages in order to defeat his opponents. Along with his Blood Demon Art, most of its purpose is not to hurt his opponents as fast as possible but to irritate and dismay his opponents while he gathers information from them for relevant use. He doesn't just recklessly fight someone unlike other demons, he first gathers potential information from them so he can later defeat his opponents with ease. He's always careful about his next moves so he can find as much openings to his opponents. Despite him still being clever and smart, he has flaws in himself as well. Because of his ego thinking that he's smarter than his opponents, he underestimated Kanao and Inosuke while fighting them. He also didn't think that Shinobu was a threat because she was small, of course Shinobu is also very smart and was one step ahead of Doma which led to Doma's defeat. Doma as a character is very beautiful and well written. He's difficult to understand because he looks innocent and reckless outside but he's a manipulative mastermind inside, he's easily one of the best villains in the anime because of his wit and cleverness despite looking so arrogant and prideful. He deserves my praise to him and I wish a lot of people could've understand his character more than hating him for killing Shinobu. Doma is the best villain in my opinion and is my favorite demon.

Now of my biggest criticisms of Demon Slayer is that we didn't get enough of Doma. He's the second most powerful Demon Moon, but his death and his fight was REALLY underwhelming compared to I'm disappointed he didn't get a whole arc dedicated to the Demon Slayers infiltrating his cult it along with multiple Hashiras. It could've been an amazing set-up for the final battle, and what really gets Muzan panicking when his second strongest demon being killed. Honestly the rushed, consecutive boss battles in the final DS arc are what I dislike the most. The moons could've had SO MUCH more time work, just like Daki & Gyutaro

Kimetsu tripped just as it was to arrive to the goal, that final fight and also to a lesser degree that Nakime was pretty much a waste of a character are a shame really.
