It’s been 133 days since Harvey Weinstein was outed as a serial abuser and harasser of women. Nearly every day since that story broke, more men in more professions have been accused of, admitted to, or denied shocking acts of aggression, exploitation, harassment, and prejudice toward women in the workplace.
No company is immune - including VICE. It has affected our workplace too.
Here and everywhere, people are doing what they always do to make sense of things: talking. To capture the kinds of conversations happening in America’s workplaces, we gathered lawyers, actors, technologists, construction workers, and hospitality workers, and asked them about the new reality of #MeToo: Women, Men, and Work.

Mjod I work in the oilfield, and in 7 years I’ve worked with maybe 15 women in the field. There are plenty of women on the administrative side of things, but the field is pretty devoid of chicks - They just don’t last. Not because of harassment or a hostile environment, but because of the physical labor aspect. In my experience, if you’ve got a crew of 6, 3 men and 3 women, pulling line and setting iron, you’ve got 3 men doing the work of 6 people. We’ll joke around and be like “we need some chicks out here lol,” and then be like “No. We don’t.”

#Metoo= I don't talk to the women at work unless it is work related. I prefer e-mail since it is a written record. No small talk, no chit chat, no compliments , no flirting, no talking about privite life, no sitting next to them in meetings, no riding in the elevator with them.If going on work travel do not ride in the same car with them, do not stay at the same hotel, do not consume alcohol, donot meet up for after work drinks or dinner or lunch. No physical contact or extended eye contact , no closed door meetings. Metoo = avoid women to the greatest extent possible.

Segregated workplaces, no problems. There are no reasons why men and women MUST work together. However, there seems to be a lot of downside. Not only from individual perspective, but also to the business. The truth is that majority of men and women can work together, but the risk of false accusation is too great for men to take that risk anymore.
@celiasantitos
@celiasantitos 6 жыл бұрын
Jexter Judicatum, Men and women must work together for many reasons, among them *common sense*. There are professions outside of business environments. How would segregating that work out? Imagine an Emergency doctor or nurse being unable to treat someone of the opposite gender - they'd have to let them die? This clearly would not work out. It's unsettling that you think segregating the world by sexes is easier than people just not harassing other people. But alas, common sense is the least common of the senses.

Celia - You need to face reality with your accusing others to use common sense. Your stating that the solution is "people just not harassing other people" while totally over looking that "innocent men" who did nothing are affected. I'm a man therefore I'm guilty, your sisterhood is doing a great job of condemning all men. Unfortunately the fantasy world you live in does not see that nor understand that. Segregation is the answer.

"Won't speak to his secretary" that's the end result. Men will just work. Avoid socializing, avoid hitting on co-worker or elsewhere. And that'll be that. Also having a hot model talk to young working actresses is in no way representative of the average man or woman in society. Like the power realms keep coming up. That men just have power... End. That's really odd. In particular the model reporter. Like most women are intimidated by her and have been her whole life. And never noticed it. And men have been terrified of her power in the sexual market. Willing to bet that's gotten unwanted attention and all kinds of awful shit from that. But also advantages. To bring it back around those intimidated women or scared women that she's never really known that about have never felt any position of power. The language getting all flipped around from post modernism in all social acts and structures is very confusing. We're hearing power in any form is top down, oppressor oppressed etc. power goes around down up forward and back. Do just saying power. That's something that can be seen from an infinite number of ways.

@@celiasantitos It's the same for a man, isn't it? I read yet another case of a mild false accusation today in the paper. I hear them all the time. What would you do if you were in my shoes, and a man & myself where equal - yet if it is a female she has the power to make any accusation to try to get something or achieve something, or for power or revenge (sometimes it doesn't make much sense). What would you do in such an unequal position? I am an Ex Feminist, and I know from experience that the answer is usually a form of "it is always men's fault". But it isn't - could you answer the question while treating males as equal, and without the ideology (e.g. oh it s extremely rare - no it isn't, esp not if it becomes easy & powerful, history shows that in many areas).

Didn't Obama meet Michelle at work ? In Obama's words ; "I kept asking and asking until Michelle agreed to go out with me". You must bear in mind that Michelle was his supervisor too. In Michelle's words ; "When he (Barack) walked out of my office after the internship interview, the ladies in my office were winking at me, and making comments as to how hot Barack was." So what am I saying all this for ? Sexual harassment is the UNWANTED/UNWELCOME approach by anybody to anybody in the office . So this effectively means that THE FIRST TRY IS NOT SEXUAL HARASSMENT ! However, if you try , and you are TURNED DOWN, you must STOP !!! Any other tries, gets you in trouble.

This is what I abide by: consent is a sine qua none condition. If you're unsure if what you're about to say or do will offend someone, either ask first politely or refrain from saying that comment or doing what you were thinking about. In a moment's time you'll find something else to think about, say, and/or do!
@dariusmaye
@dariusmaye 6 жыл бұрын
Celia Santos Agree with what you abide by, but what is considered offensive now. Almost everything can be offensive, so it’s very hard to sit back and think before you talk. Also, what’s consider sexual harassment and can what women consider sexual harassment be use against them as well? Sexual harassment or assault is wrong, but now and days it seems like sexual harassment or assault is now being considered only what men are capable of doing.
@celiasantitos

DJMaye, I think I get what you mean (correct me if I'm wrong) but let me try to answer with an example so it's more understandable: when one is trying to be funny or impress someone or make them like you, it's easy to resort to cliches that someone can easily get offended by, like for example twirling a girl around to see her full body all the way around while complimenting her, or excessively complimenting her body or attire or whatever, or sandwiching inappropriate comments into "compliments" such as, "wow, you're looking hot, bet all the boys are gonna be all up on you / you're gonna get it with so many guys / the guys aren't going to leave you alone." It's not that women are more easily offended now, it's that we've realized we don't have to laugh at things that we don't find funny - that we actually find offensive, or just unwanted.

this might be partly due to the fact that women - as protrayed here - have to play nice towards their male superiors to get "accepted". I'm a man but I can imagine that in such a sublinimal toxic environment their frustration as a potentially more irrational force goes where they can let it out the easiest way - which in this case would be towards their rivals, therefore the women they work with.

I never said that the circumstances I discribed should be a reason to absolve women of responsibility for their beaviour. The responsibility towards ones behaviour is not only the result of an individual persuing its own interest - which btw is easier for men then for women. The space in which every one of us tries to live up to ones responsibility and where these responsibilities should be acknowledged - or not - is heavily based on competition and therefore also influenced by expectations which for a big part get more powerful the more unconcious they are. Living up to your responsibilities cannot happen if you have to do it on your own because the image you have of yourself is definitely not the whole picture as it is for a large part also painted and defined by your environment. You have to be able to engage in constructive and therefore solidary interaction with people to relate your responsibilities to the world outside in a positive way.

The media seems to be catering to the abuse of women in the workplace, or the home, BUT I can assure you, women are not without their faults. I personally know of a guy who is married to honestly one of the meanest women I have ever known. She was upset at him over something, and he literally stood there with his hands behind his back while she slapped and hit him. That took quite a man to take that and do nothing. Now she's cheating on him, but his response? He still loves her and is fighting for her because he wants to fix their marriage (she's mad because of the long hours he has to work). Another guy got shoved down the stairs by his wife, and the police arrested her because of domestic violence. I was dating a girl one time, and noticed a book on her parents coffee table, thinking nothing of it, I picked it up and started to read it. It was a book of poetry that she had written. I was surprised at how talented she was. She walks in, and I said "Wow, this is really good!"... her response? "You were not supposed to see that" and she slapped me... I broke up with her. Not about to have that in my marriage. I think this whole #metoo thing has been hijacked into making everything think abuse both verbally and physically is one sided... it isn't. It's on both sides. Both are guilty.

So much so, that I urge the folks at VICE to give a little air time to the naive, barely adult males in similar scenarios who are subjected to the physical assault(shoved, kicked, and slapped by the low lifing sack of crap who's typically the manager/owner of these places), relational aggression, and barely minimum wage slave labor so characteristic of such employers. If otherwise decent, honorable men are unwilling to speak up, this may be in no small part attributable to the lack of support we receive when our own dignity is trampled on, not only by women but those men who think nothing of preying on those who are vulnerable.

I'm sure that you're very offended by this. But it's never okay to attack someone simply for having another opinion than you. I stand for equal rights between men and women. Some women destroys the #metoo movement, like falsely accuse men for something or attack other women for not having the same opinion as the "superior" women has. Check your privilege for people believing you when you say you've been sexually assaulted by men, when men who've gone through the same thing as you by women get no sympathy, get no love. But mockery, laughter and getting told to man up! The first wave fought for their right to vote, to stand not above, but beside the men in society. What the hell is your wave fighting for? That's why there are differing views within the same ideology - this adds richness and plurality of thought, and should not be used to discredit feminism as a whole. There are pretty gaping differences between Americans, but each one is as American as the other! (from the redwood foreeests to the gulf stream waaaateers....) I'm not sure who created that slogan you used; it's catchy, but doesn't accurately represent feminism. Also, just in case this was directed towards me: I have not attacked you at ALL for anything... and consider my privilege double checked

I down voted it because I stand for Equality, not female-centred attitudes or ideology. So yes, according to the Feminist Ideology I was taught, where by ideology, men are always to blame and any questioning of it is "your part of the patriarchy". You even do it yourself by assuming or implying they all MUST sexually harass women of agree with it JUST BECAUSE THEY DISAGREE WITH YOU. Doesn't that fit the definition of an echo chamber? The issue is that if you are a woman AND you have Unequal power over me to accuse me for the slightest unintended indiscretion, or make a false accusation (which would be quite attractive to some people)........ _then I cannot trust you can I?_

@@ingridp4457 That's not quite true. As I vaguely recall that part, the Journalist or channel or editor edited it to manipulate the audience into thinking he was saying something else, by missing the question. He didn't say that is inviting sexual harassment. I can't remember what the question was, but I think his point was that that isn't so professional in a workplace environment, in his opinion. Lots of things aren't appropriate in a workplace, esp. if your working with both men and women & that makes it more difficult anyway..... so I think it isn't so unreasonable as the Manipulative Media made it out to be.

Even before this movement took off. I felt that it was hard to work with and for women. Two genders in the workplace has always been a legal playground. Men can share and have lived similar hostile experiences but have not reacted or been supported by the legal system as much as women have. I do not support any work environment that can neglect or allow hostility toward any gender. But l just say now, that non agressive men are at a climbing disadvantage. That is why you see men trying to create their own movement. For protection sake. Men now fear more the women that can abuse the legal support available to them, than the real consecuenses of being caught in a real, intentional incident.

I've quietly read a lot of these replies but feel the need to say something here. If a adult asked you if you liked anal sex everytime you scooped ice cream at your first job when you were a teenager, wouldn't you carry that hurt with you. What if it was an adult female that asked if you liked your ass fingered? Everything these women have said have matched my experience perfectly. Although I don't have time to tell my countless stories. If you don't disrespect women, then there will be no problem. If you innocently flirt with someone and they don't like it stop. If you think its okay to flirt with an employee then i would ask that you reconsider your stance. Men should just be nice, not paranoid.

While men try and be better.. I hope women try and understand the dangers of what can happen if we don't at least consider the hyperbole that is coming along with all of this and what THAT can cause. It's truly damaging, actually, imo. It could render society damn near dysfunctional. We could end up having an incredibly lousy, militant society. Who wants that? I hope we are all aware of this because let me tell you, a society where most men are afraid to hit on, flirt and even so much as even conversate much with women.. will ABSOLUTELY SUCK for both men and women. For everybody. We need to be careful. What's happening across the board with all of this, in general, is not all entirely healthy. On either side. We are all going to see this unfold soon. Women are definitely going see the extreme attitudes this is creating and at some point will realize they are double victims. Victims of stupid, perverts... and then, after, victims of male paranoia created post metoo. And it's a very real concern, I think. Do we want a workplace where men are afraid to so much as even to smile at women? What a insanely pathetic society we would be.

Tza Foxx Like my urge to socialize with women in a non sexual way? Sexual harrasment guidelines for jobs are so broad saying the word "Hello" to woman can be considered sexual harrasment. Say for example I'm employed at a place that has both men and women in the same departments. Say a higher paying job opened up and the running was between me and a woman. I get the job because I'm more productive, she cam say I sexually harrased her, have no evidence to prove it, and I'll most likely get fired, if I'm lucky I'll get demoted and earn less pay than I did before the promotion, she being the only other candidate will get the job I earned. When literally anything can constitute sexual harrasment in the workplace when associating with the opposite sex do you expect me to want to socialize and work with the opposite sex? When I work a job I do my best to stay employed, because finding a job takes time, and time is money, and with no income your savings start to drain quick. Personally I think that the sexes should be separated at the workplace so that nothing remotely sexual can occur. Gay men can work with the women, gay women can work with the Men. The workplace is about working, not about appearance, or unneeded socializing, or anything but working. Women don't need to wear makeup on the job unless they are modeling or acting. I love to socialize but if I have to choose between socializing at work and job security I'll pick job security. When with women on the job I act like a slave: eyes down, don't look at them, don't speak unless spoken too, always be working, don't do anything that could be considered not working besides eating, drinking, pissing, and shitting.

So I would not hire you or work with you, through no fault or your own (or mime either). Any time is bad if it doesn't take into account it's misuse. I've heard of many cases, and most of them unreported. Three of them: (1) The person doesn't even attempt to solve it themselves first. (2) It is trivial or a misunderstanding.
