In this Drum Lesson we will tackle a more difficult topic. Metric Modulation - it is a way to increase or decrease the tempo of a groove. This is not something you will hear in your everyday music, but it will greatly improve your sense of time and your ability to play to a click.

Hey man! I felt like giving you a run down of what I'm working on. Not sure if sharing it will be helpful to either one of us, but here we go. Using my digital music making program (Rytmik Studio) on my laptop, I re-created all of the beats from your 8th note grooves I and II videos. I also used Microsoft Excel to create my own drum staff, so that I could write each drum beat out. I printed all 8 pages, taped them together and framed it. Each drum beat has a time stamp so that I can easily see where to skip to in the drum track if I want to play a particular beat. I'm playing on a 6 string bass btw. As for my technique, when the only thing being played on the drums is the hi-hat, I mute my high strings and strike them with my fingernail, in a similar motion to how a guitarist strums with a pick, but more of a strike than a strum. This gives a similar sound to match the hi-hat. When a kick drum hits I slap the open E string with my thumb. And when the snare hits I pop the D string. It has taken me longer than I thought it would, just to get comfortable with each drum beat. The beats with 16th notes has been particularly tricky; going from the nail strike to a pop quickly takes some practice because they both utilize the fingers. So far I'm focusing on just the kick snare and hi-hat, but eventually I'd like to have techniques for the ride, crash and toms. I'd also like to have more than one option for each drum sound. This isn't the kind of thing that would sound good if it were done constantly; that would probably sound too mechanical, but I'm hoping it will help me think like a drummer, so that I can better fuse with any player. I also just got a practice pad and I plan on practicing rudiments. Maybe not all, but at least those that are most commonly utilized. I plan on learning (and hopefully mastering) all of the Paradiddles, including the Flam and Drag versions. If you could recommend the most useful rudiments to learn, what would they be, besides the ones I mentioned? Obviously I'll spend time the Flam and Drag rudiments when learning the Paradiddle versions. So my two questions for now are: (1) what rudiments do you recommend for maximum application, and (2) is there a free, and easy to use program for writing music staff that you might recommend. If not free, then just a name or two of good programs would help. Excel works fine for drum staff, but it's hard to make nice looking rest icons, and also if I were to need Bass, Treble or Alto clef's I wouldn't be able to make a decent looking icon for those either. Thanks for any input, I greatly appreciate your time and efforts. PS I uploaded my drum track to the Rytmik cloud via the program, but I left it unlocked for anyone to alter, and I gave you credit by your KZbin account name, and the names of the two videos. If you're not okay with that I can take them down. I didn't think to ask permission before uploading it because I saw it as promotion for your channel, but I then figured I should let you know, just in case you wanted me to take it down for some reason.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been very busy the last couple of weeks. I think it is so cool that you apply the drum grooves to the bass. I'd love to hear that! You should do some videos on "how to think like a drummer - for bass players"! What the most important Rudiments are is very subjective. But I'd say: Single Strokes Double Strokes (you basically get all Rolls for free.. 5's, 7's, 9's etc) Single Paradiddle Six Stroke Roll Flam Accent These are the ones I use the most. For Notation I use Finale Printmusic, but it is not free. What's also really cool (and free) is Lilypond. It is a bit tricky until you get used to it, but it is really powerful!

nicholighkun I think your approach is pretty cool. It would be very interesting if you could find a drummer who would collaborate with you to develop some interplay and patterns. What a learning experience for you both. Then you could make a video on the concept.

Okay, I've watched this video twice, and I've started making a digital drum track using your compositions, so I understand this much better than I did the first time. Still, I have to admit that this is one of those topics that is just difficult to fully comprehend and put into practice. God willing, I'll keep at it though. I still have to compose your last two grooves, so maybe after that I will understand it a little better. Plus I somehow missed the first polyrhythm video, which I'm about to go watch, I'm sure that will help too.
