Metric modulation is used here to transition to a new tempo while still having a relationship with the old tempo. Also watch the video to the end to see what would happen if the drums doesn't modulate.

Awesome analysis, this is super cool! For anyone interested, another cool example of Animals as Leaders using metric modulation is in Cognitive Contortions. They switch between 1/8th note triplets at 188 and 16th notes at 141 throughout the song, thereby changing the feel but keeping the "speed" of the notes the same

I think your channel gives the best drum teaching contents in KZbin. I bought the pdfs of both Paramexer's video, as they're helping me writing an essay about Matt Garstka for an exam for the Conservatory i'm studying in. Your work is terrific!

And secondly, it's cool that you're writing an essay about Matt Garstka and that somehow my videos helped :D. And lastly, I wish you all the best in your growth in the conservatory and as a musician! It's always great to know younger generations of musicians are being inspired and continuing to push the boundaries of music and drumming :D CHEERS!

i understand the concept but it's difficult for me to hear it clearly in other songs by myself, how do u recognize it? is there any excercise or thing to do to make it easier to assimilate?
@met-shuggah3845
@met-shuggah3845 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say that sort of awareness comes from listening to a lot of music like this and recognizing the similarities in the rhythmic tricks these artists use. If you're a drummer, practicing playing stuff like this will also translate to being able to recognize this sort of stuff more easily.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 3 жыл бұрын
Yes this can be trained. Listening to a lot of prog music helps, but being able to do it and being good at recognizing, needs polyrhythmic ear and coordination training. I've an example of simple exercises you can do in these 2 videos to develop this skill, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXjNqneenbCgetE and this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2G6qp6CqrN6pbs Hope they help. Just be patient though. I've been training myself for more than 5 years at least ( I never actually kept track so it could have been longer or shorter)

Couldn't you just count 2:41 as 3/4, just slower? Is it just preference?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 3 жыл бұрын
Yes no reason why not. Just showing that the slower tempo is not just chosen without any reason, and has a relationship from the previous tempo.

If you take away the tempo and the click track, yes it becomes 3/4 at a slower tempo. But the point of this is showing how we arrive at that slower tempo.
