A metric prefix is a unit prefix that precedes a basic unit of measure to indicate a multiple or fraction of the unit. While all metric prefixes in common use today are decadic, historically there have been a number of binary metric prefixes as well.[1] Each prefix has a unique symbol that is prepended to the unit symbol. The prefix kilo-, for example, may be added to gram to indicate multiplication by one thousand: one kilogram is equal to one thousand grams. The prefix milli-, likewise, may be added to metre to indicate division by one thousand; one millimetre is equal to one thousandth of a metre.
Decimal multiplicative prefixes have been a feature of all forms of the metric system, with six dating back to the system's introduction in the 1790s. Metric prefixes have even been prepended to non-metric units. The SI prefixes are standardized for use in the International System of Units (SI) by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in resolutions dating from 1960 to 1991.[2] Since 2009, they have formed part of the International System of Quantities.

I'll give you an honest reply, which is, this is not a good way to learn this or anything. Short cuts are designed to get you to the correct answer without understanding why that is the correct answer. I made this video because it was a way to get my students through this quickly so that we could move on toward applying it in other material. If you want to know a little bit more about why this short cut gives you the right answer, here is the original video I made on prefix conversions (can you guess which is the more popular video?) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3bGf3SurMqVapY. I suspect your teacher was trying to get you to understand the process, rather than just showing you how to get the right answer.

I just came up with something weird (but that makes it easier to remember!) for remembering the order of the metric units: Thank God Man Kind BASEically Dodged Comets Made of Microscopic Ninja Pilots = Tetra Giga Mega Kilo BASE UNIT Deci Centi Milli Micro Nano Pico = Exponents: 12, 9, 6, 3, 0, -1, -2, -3, -6, -9, -12 ;) Hopefully you'll imagine microscopic ninjas on comets that mankind dodged and thus, remember the order of the metric units. Worked for me!

It’s easier to just remember the chart as presented for me. Why add more information that you have to remember? Just look at the exponential progression which is the same for both negative and positive powers. Base, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12 and -1,-2,-3,-6,-9,-12. Base is always 0
