During the Second World War, the Swiss railways couldn't get much coal, but still had a lot of steam locomotives, and plenty of hydroelectric power ... so some steam locomotives had a pantograph added above the cab roof, and an electric heading element added to the boiler.

I'm really impressed that the developers put so much effort into making the railways in their game realistic, even though only a small proportion of the players will probably ever notice it. It shows a real sense of pride in what they were doing. I assume they either hired someone with a background on the railways to work on the game, or at least got people who knew the subject to give feedback during development. One thing I remember from playing it was being impressed with the variety of visual assets you saw going by when you were just riding the train in between missions. A lot of games would have just had 10 seconds worth of looping scenery outside the window, but Metro Exodus managed to make it feel like you were genuinely travelling.
@HowardOffTheRailsАй бұрын
@@chrisball3778 yes 100%, they put loads of effort in and researched it well. I was likewise impressed with the variety of scenery in the various climates throughout the game. I spent quite a lot of time on the train and hanging out on the front walkways looking at the passing infrastructure and like you say I never got the impression it was just repeated. I only played this game after it was suggested on the channel and I’m very glad I did. I thought it was a masterpiece all round.

The Finnish Defence Forces and the State Railways also kept an emergency stockpile of steam and diesel locomotives and spare carriages during the cold war and 90's for war time use, but those have been scrapped since.
@MadSwede872 ай бұрын
same in Sweden I have heard that there may be one or two steam locomotives left in storage somewhere in case of emergency

A game that has quite a bit of rails is Escape from Tarkov, although I think there's no console version available. Still would be amazing to see you review it if you get the chance, because it looks extremely detailed. P.S. there are rails in different maps, but the ones that I think have the most rails are "Customs" and "Reserve"

Hello Howard! Enjoying the videos. While not exactly train-centric, the game Armored Core 6 does feature some really large scale rail networks in-game. Would love to see you take a look at it!

Having worked in control for a few years now, it's quite funny to hear some of these terms put to a video game. Especially some that evoke that pit of dread at work. Nonetheless, this was a real neat watch!

I just love your approach to video games as a railway engineer! I'd like to give you a video game suggestion for the future videos if you don't mind. Watch Dogs by Ubisoft features an overground rapid transit network inspired by Chicago "L". I heard that the system is well implemented, so I think it'd be worth checking out. Thanks for the quality content and I'd love to see more videos like this!

In theory, would it be possible to run on the very low quality tracks seen in game by running the loco slowly and using a set of wheels with very wide tires? E.g. use a wheel with the same sized flange but a much wider tire so as to allow it to run on the less accurately gauged and broken track without falling through, like in the the taiga level?
@HowardOffTheRails2 ай бұрын
@@mildly_miffed_man1414 in UK regulations, In a lot of circumstances you can pass broken rails at 5mph, so you can do that. I would t have trusted the foundation enough there though probably in taiga.

Good video one thing as advice a better mic could be beneficial or reducing the echo effect to get it more crisp I recommend looking for a dynamic mic and a boom arm would be beneficial to have it closer to your mouth so that you can lower the gain level and so it doesn’t sound dull and lackluster. A microphone software would be something to prioritize first

The "tank" is a reused asset from the previous games - a neonazi faction in Moscow modelled armored rail cars after the WW2 Panzer 3
