I love dread so much! The only thing I have mixed feelings about is the music. At one hand, it provides amazing atmosphere and elevates the tone of the situation Samus is in. But on the other, it's missing (imo) those atmospheric/catchy tunes you can find all across Super Metroid (like the overgrown brinstar theme). It has beautiful composition either way, and I'm extremely grateful for the music and the game :)
@wanghiskhan73453 жыл бұрын
I always hate the exclusion of theme music in modern properties/releases. Batman Begins is solid and I know Zimmer worked to make him "earn" his theme but I still think it was a bit muted and bland. Love the brinstar theme you're talking about.

After rolling credits last night, I can say that my first foray into a 2D Metroid game was thoroughly enjoyable. Movement is fast and fluid, making for great fun as you slide under crevices, wall jump to higher areas and run for your life while being chased by an E.M.M.I. I do wish the double jump worked without needing to be moving left or right, though. There were more than a few times where I did a tuck roll instead because I wasn't pushing the left stick far enough left or right when trying to dodge an enemy or attack. But that is a minor complaint. While I sometimes got frustrated by getting lost, eventually realized that there was always a way out of an area if I looked thoroughly enough, and that helped me to enjoy the process of stumbling through the map over and over (The crisp, well detailed visuals didn't hurt, either). Plus, by the end of the game, it was quite fun to be powerful enough to shred through enemies with ease while trying to collect all the items. Overall, I ended the game feeling like my $60USD was well spent. Now I want more 2D Metroid.

This game with a Dpad would’ve been awful with this game considering how buttery smooth Samus handles and the controls are a sublime experience.
@xiongkuniu3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree, the game was absolutely designed with the stick in mind. Not only is the d pad mapped to specific actions, but the free aim is only possible through the stick. This is not a fair point of criticism from this review. If the reviewer is going to criticize not being able to switch to the d pad, then it’s necessary to come up with an alternative for how free aim would work.
@joesterling42993 жыл бұрын
The problem is the slipperiness he mentioned. if you're off by even a little bit when pressing up or down, Samus moves left or right in a hurry. Getting used to planting yourself to aim is essential.

Felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities with sound design, like when the EMMI gets you, it doesn't sound quite as "dreadful" as it should. Also some weird music in the intro sequence, totally out of place. And the AI voice is quite annoying. Most sound and ALL gameplay/puzzles/exploration is awesome, just my nitpicks
@Esenin4723 жыл бұрын
The music in the intro is the theme from Super Metroid, it is a series' classic, but I agree with you on the sound desing and ost in general, to me it is the only thing it really lacked with the bgm being too much anonymous compared to some of the bangers the previous games had. The AI however is fine, in Fusion there was an identical system to Dread's, with the dedicated AI rooms but in Fusion it would literally tell you where to go and unlock the way to that sector, in Dread I found it to be a less intrusive nice middleground

I'm right before the final boss fight as this review comes out. will watch the full video later, but as someone who loves the lore of metroid and would put metroidvanias at his favorite genre, this has been a true, addictive pleasure for me. i could barely put it down, and it was well worth the full 60euros for me. The combat and controls are tight, responsive, satisfying, but i feel there's something Metroid Dread does best even among the greatest metroidvanias: exploration. the maps are all an intricate puzzle that starts out with a feeling of linearity, but thanks to the myriad of upgrades that the game has available (and somehow most of them feel satisfying and unique to use), they open up more and more, and it all falls in place like an elaborate puzzle depicting a work of art, and each time you put a piece in a place you couldnt before, it conveys a feeling of earned power that i find is rare. 10/10 for me, could probably drone on about it for hours.

I would like to point out that if you are like me and prefer using an 8bitdo M30 or a similar third party retro controller that uses it's directional pad as the Nintendo Switch's left thumbstick inputs then the issue of not being able to move with the directional pad becomes a non issue when playing Metroid Dread on the Nintendo Switch. I prefer to use the direcrional pad on the M30 as it is one of my favorite directional pads available for the Nintendo Switch. I just thought I would mention this because you guys made a point of it in the video. Unlike some of 8bitdo's other retro controllers that are compatible with the Nintendo Switch, like the now pricey SNES30 for example, the M30 is still available on most websites for under forty bucks. Just remember to order the Bluetooth version and not the 2.4 GHZ version with the dongle that is designed for the Sega Genesis Classic Edition by accident! It looks almost identical. I also would like to point out that I was able to program a ready to use input configuration for Metroid Dread in the Nintendo Switch's settings menu that works perfectly on my M30 without much hubbub. I can still lock my aiming with the left bumper and toggle missile fire on the fly with my right bumper. The only concession I had to make was to map the slide move to the y or x button, I forget which, which works totally fine. It all feels much better than on a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Do not listen to any of the Metroid Dread haters who are posting articles on the internet right now in which they are criticizing the game for a number of chicken crap reasons. Metroid Dread is a stone cold modern classic, and I expected nothing less from Nintendo.

I'm with Glenn on the controls thing, so many times where I felt like I couldn't nail something down with the joystick but feel like I could've nailed it with the D-Pad

This is the first 2d Metroid game I've played, and honestly it scratches a video gaming itch I didn't know I needed scratched. The game is flipping awesome.

This game is simply amazing and definitely moved to the top of my Switch favorite game (maybe all time favorite top 10?!)

I wanted d-pad controls when I started the game and quickly came to realize how smooth and sleek Samus controls and admit I was completely wrong. The game handles like a dream.

Personally the only bad things i could say about this game is : 1) -the back tracking for those who want to do a 100% will be a pain in the ass cause of the lack of a hub system connecting the areas, so you have to traverse throught multiple locations just to reach a specific spot or even do an entire loop cause in some areas the doors or pathways are one ways which block you to progress any further. 2)- before aquiring the sonar abillity to locate break able walls, you may end up in some frustrating moments trying to find the break able wall to progress, this most likely will happen early on the game were you don't have many missiles to spare to use since you are low in capacity, but also if you haven't any experirience with metroid game the whole idea finding walls to break may not be familiar to you since in metroid the walls/blocks you break have nothing on them unusual to give you the idea that those can break (yes there are some walls that have a red pulsating thing that make it obvious to shoot, but there are also the block walls). happened to me twice, which in one case i had to watch a tutorial after trying to find it for 20 minutes. 3)- no dpad option just killed me multiple times especially on boss fights cause of the lack of accuracy while on top of that you have to aim and move with the same analog stick, this is by design since almost every button on your controller is required to be used to play the game so there is no way to switch the control settings. 4) - idk how to call those fights, they weren't boss fights but treated as one by giving them their own stage and require to defeat them so you can progress further in to the game. let's call those elite fights, on each EMMI there is one which is stupidly easy and exactly the same every time, each chozzo mechanical and infected soldier are also the same but they just hit harder or instead to fight one you fight two at the same time. there was no diversity and it was quite repetetive for the sake of play time. 5) - price, yes ill complain about that, while the game is almost perfect, the price tag is not at all. besides the indie market flooding the metroidvania genre in affordable prices and good quality there is no way to sell me a game as expensive as this and not give its players at least some language options. Besides adam speaking english in a robotic voice the rest do not even speak in a regular language, so in the end of the day the only thing they had to do is adding subtitles in different languages in the cutscenes and the UI. Like come on nintendo this had to be the least you should have done. I may had my complains but i truly love this game (most the times). I hope for nintendo to stop being so negative about old fashioned game designs, konami did the same with Iga and his Castlevania series but luckily, with founders he delivered a new industry standard for metroidvania games in the form of Bloodstained with it's 2.5D graphics, which we also see now on metroid dread. With a game as succesfull as metroid dread i wish to see the older metroid games getting a remake or at least being finally introduced in to the nintendo eshop in a trilogy series.

Got 1 emmi left, I really hope for a cool area that I haven't discovered yet, hot/cold areas, def spices up the rooms to have extreme temperatures, I wish other metrovanias used extreme temperatures to spice up areas and rooms....

I've seen it noted that the reason that there's no d-pad support for movement is probably because it'd have been difficult to support free aim while moving without making it a completely different game by using the right stick for aim. Which some people would have no doubt preferred but being dyspraxic I find twin-stick shooters and that next to impossible so I'm glad they didn't.

I’ve never played a Metroid game before. Yes, I’m 34 and grew up with a Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Never played it lol. Great review. Thinking about getting this… we shall see.
