Man, such fond memories for this game. About ten years ago I got this game for my 15th birthday. I literally just broke my arm and my dad gave me the game as we walked out of the hospital. I was at my grandma's with no internet and beat the game in 3 days by myself, no help. These are the stories that make games great

Back in the day you got a pencil and graph paper and filled in as you went making your own map. You could get super detailed if you wanted but normally you just wanted to mark big landmarks like a save etc.

Graph paper! I hadn't thought of that! Great idea! That would work for original Metroid and Super Metroid too. Super Metroid has a map, but filling in your own with the locations of everything can be more helpful too.

Samus Returns, the remake of this, is the only Metroid game I fully completed. And only because it tells you how much of everything is in which areas. Love these games, there's so much to find. This is a hell of a good time. The "how would you figure that out" remarks are actually surprisingly simple - you just find weird stuff and figure "there's something I can do with this, or else it wouldn't be here." And then you use all your items and either it works or you come back later. Now how would _Samus_ figure that out, given it's a natural area in a cave? Beats the hell out of me.

This is one of my favorite Game Boy titles. I remember getting this game one youthful summer and powering thru it in days. I remember the manual stating "you might not have enough missiles to defeat the Metroid Queen". I looked in every corner and cranny I could just so I could find every missile upgrade. I don't remember using every missile on her, but sure was glad I gather extra! I'm still surprised just how big this game was for a GB title.

I remember playing this game as a kid on the big 4 battery grey gameboy. It's def one of my all time fav gameboy games because of how hard it was to figure out where to go and how to move on to the next part of the game. I didn't have the magazines or maps, so as a kid I just had to go everywhere a bunch of times until I figured out what to do. lol good times.

Great to hear a reference to Awesome Video Games. Those guys were hilarious. And dang it, I had to beat Metroid II without any map when I was 10. Took me weeks exploring, spider-balling and bombing the hell out of everything. But damn it was rewarding when you finally find a power up. Using a magazine/online map just isn't as satisfying as doing it yourself.

I remember the Lemmings issue of Nintendo Power with the full map to this game. I had received the game for Christmas in 1991, shortly after the game was released, and I had gotten lost to the point that I was discouraged from playing the game again. The Lemmings issue came out around summer of 92. When I finally had a full map of the game, it was tremendously relieving.

+thejtrax Yeah, Nintendo Power was never a thing outside of the US. Same deal with the cartoons and shit. Best case scenario was one of your friends somehow learned a cheat code or two. Had to beat games like this completely blind. Which, in Metroid II's case, probably made it a better game. Spent endless hours bombing everything, trying to find every secret. Metroids II, III, and IV are god damn glorious games. III and IV are strong contenders for the best games ever made.

Farming is like Mega Man, where you keep shooting those respawning screws to fill up all your weapons and health. Grinding is what you do in Castlevania: SOTN, where you sit outside of a save point and keep killing the same enemies over and over to level up, going to the save point when you get low on health.

i like the map from metroid fusion and zero mission, because it tags all the powerups after i got them so i know where ive already been, the super metroid didnt have that which make me sometimes backtrack to places that ive already been
