I recently watched Aliens 1-4 again (though 4 is utter crap and 3 is mediocre) and I suddenly had the urge to play Metroid. Then I thought why not play them all and make a little anthology like with the Wonder Boy and Super Star Wars series. So, here I go. the first Metroid game on NES! :)
You are Samus Aran, a bounty hunter, sent to planet Zebes to hunt down Mother Brain. There is not much story and it's pretty much known to anyone anyway so I'll spare you the details.
It's a classic action platformer that combines Mario's platforming with Zelda's item upgrades and adds lots of shooting action in a claustrophobic system of caverns. It's a large set of rooms and corridors, almost maze-like, and the area is divided by obstacles that often require specific items like high jump boots or bombs. You are not exactly forced to have them in many cases and can find either other ways to pass these obstacles. You are also not forced to do things in a specific order. Just explore and you will gradually progress. It's extremely well done and fairly complex for an 8-bit game. It's just a classic game.
I was quite amazed about the graphics. sure, they are just 8-bit, but still very detailed and not that repetitive. Same with the sound: some tunes are very memorable. The maze structure of the planet is well designed and makes exploration interesting. The upgrades are really upgrades and not a slight buff in your jumping or shooting ability. there is absolutely nothing to complain about except for some slowdowns, but it's not really annoying. The controls are perfect and it's fairly hard compared to later games in the series. I mean, the bosses are easy, but in some parts there's quite a lot of junk flying around that pushes you into lava or other hazardous pits.
The game also has a password system and you get a code after you die. You then restart at the beginning of the game with all the stuff you had. It's fairly short if you have mastered it and just rush through, but if you take your time to explore and play on your own without a walkthrough you're in for a few hours of great 8-bit gaming. highly recommended if you get a chance to play this!
Please don't forget to subscribe if you like my videos! If there is a game you'd like to see played through, let me know by posting a comment below or by sending me a message. Thanks!

Playing this back when I was 14, I remember the excitement of passing to the next level, such as at 28:00, hearing different music, seeing different looking creatures, such as the things that circle around the surface of the platforms, now take laying bombs twice to kill them, where before you only needed to do that once. Seeing the bugs that fly out of those pipes twice as fast and close together in the more difficult levels. I've always liked the accomplishments of learning how to conquer the new more difficult lairs, making it to the next one, then making it to the next, etc. It was all fun when I was 14

Although it had a smaller map, this game actually took me longer to complete than Super Metroid for a few reasons. No in-game map, no save points, no health replenishment upon death (so a lot of time is spent farming), limited firing angles so navigating rooms with enemies can get pretty tricky, rooms that look identical to one another, and no run button or speed boosts!!!! STILL LOVE IT THOUGH!!!

I agree. I think that the Lair 2, Ridley's lair is even more difficult than Kraid's lair 1, those balls of death, twice as many bat creatures from the ceiling, and how fast and close together those bugs fly out at you. Kraid's lair has that too, but it looked that they flew out even faster and closer together in Ridley's lair.

This might be the best music in the game. I've been playing SNES Metroid this week, but was missing this particular theme from the NES Metroid. Funny that I just found you linking to that music today.

Played it first time when I was 5 I think with ny older brother. Remember the ”infinite” labyrinths and scary music in the items room. The infinite loops of some areas and the codes we wrote down on paper. Have not played it since. Fun to see a full run as well as compoete maps online. Super Metroid Ive played again and again over the years. Gotta give it to the devs though. Exploration and mystics are really great in the game

I played a game like this about 15 years ago. I am not very sure that this was the game because when I was playing it back then, it had another sense. It was more realistic and scary and hard. What I only remember is that the character could become a rolling ball. Other than that I cant say this was the same game... Now I think of it, how can games change so much, I mean these games were looking more like... I cant find the word but it was surely giving me shivers down my spine!

People can say all they want about the first Metroid game, but THIS was my childhood. I had no idea where to go or what to do. I just had fun exploring. Of course, watching my older brother, who knew what to do, was fun as well. I remember he put in a code, or something, to play as Samus without her suit. That was how I learned she was a girl. I was confused at first but I just remembered being shocked to learn that for the first time

It seems like video games were tougher to conquer in the 1980's, and the music with the timed boards could shake one's concentration. My dad, who is resting in peace, was so good at figuring out how to beat these games. When we saw him beat this game, I was ecstatic to see that the protagonist is a woman!!! 😄 It was inspiration for a little girl!!!

What software are you using to record your game play? Also, what kind of set up do you have to run the game? (I'm curious because I have many game systems set up on my TV. My PC is also hooked up to the same TV. So I'd like to record game play from the game systems using my PC but not sure if it will work since it is on a different input.) Great work. Keep uploading. :)

Hi Abetroll01. Sorry this is 2 years late but wanted to make sure you got your answer since SOMEONE (I won't name any names) didn't answer it for you. I record my gameplay on my channel with OBS Studio. It is free. Not sure if he is using the same thing or not but it works well with recording from the computer. I also use an emulator which makes it easier to record with a webcam. If you want to record from an actual system thats hooked up to your tv which is hooked up to the computer I would recommend looking into the Elgato on amazon or ebay. Its very helpful hardware that makes it possible to record from your PC & TV & Game System all at once without it overloading your computer! Hope this helps!

The level design in this game used to drive me crazy because of the excessively long Shafts that you would have to climb to get around certain areas, also the rooms that have lava or acid on the floor that had enemies that could shoot projectiles through the tiles was cheap and the enemies that were waiting for you as you enter the room getting a quick hit off of you or as you are leaving they room the Geemers can fly through the door and still hit you. Thank goodness that Super Metroid they resigned the level of BrinStar and Norfair where the areas are more parallel and linear allowing player for a smoother run.

Back when I was playing this as a kid, we had no internet, no videos to spoil the game, or even strategy guides. We literally had to go in blind, and receive help from other players who's been playing the game as well. We had Nintendo Power, but all that did was give a few hints, that's it. I seriously miss those days and wish they did this to Metroid Dread :(
