About the re-use of areas, you have to understand the huge gap in time frame from super metroid to metroid prime. It was a complete surprise when it was announced, it had been like 9 years. People WANTED a return to familiar metroid-style environments, and as the studio was mostly untried it isn't surprising that they played it safe. Playing these games back to back nearly like you are, I can definitely see why you bring this up though. But you gotta see it through it's historical context at the time.

Also, despite the similarities, I think the re-used levels give off different feels. For example, the Wrecked Ship from Super Metroid is downright creepy and threatening, what with ghosts being everywhere, while the Crashed Frigate from Prime feels much more mellow and melancholy due to the soft colors and music.

It also helped make the transition from 2D to 3D smoother. Metroid trying out the FPS genre is already a big shift, so an attempt to keep it covering familiar ground isn't a bad thing. I'm not one to criticize a game for being too similar. Frankly, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing until it becomes a recurring issue, like with the Pokémon series where it seems they can't change up ANY of the themes to save their lives. That's doubly true when a series has gone untouched for a length of time. Fusion and Prime were the first new games in an entire console generation, and each of them kept a lot of elements from Super, but broke away in opposite directions.

I'm sorry, but even watching this again ages later, my main complaint about this retrospective is both you, TheGeekCritique and several other KZbinrs seeming lack of understanding of the multiple shortcuts that exist in Metroid Prime. You complain about having to SLOWLY travel back to your ship from Phendrana....but from the exit to Phendrana in Magmoor, you're 3 or so rooms away from an elevator that leads you almost *immediately* back to the Overworld, a mere jog from your ship. When you beat Thaardus, there's a spider ball track that leads to an elevator that not only takes you back to the far end of Magmoor (which you can use to get some power ups), but which ultimately leads to *THE SAME ELEVATOR* which you can then use to get to the Chozo Ruins. Each of your group of friends that has looked at this game have *conveniently* ignored or missed these shortcuts, and it's infuriating to watch you complain about the backtracking in the game when this is just *one* of the shortcuts. It's ironic; you claim to know Magmoor Caverns like the back of your hand, but you don't seem to know about this place? What's going on here?

Being a huge fan of this game and a person who does take this shortcut every time I play. The very fact that most critics seem to miss it (and I remember missing the point on my very first playthrough) tells me that there is a disconnect in the design responsible for communicating this to the player. It's still a flaw in some regards.

I think that backtracking is far more than a staple in Prime. The majority of the optional upgrades such as missile expansions were hidden as to be collected during backtracking, in an old area, but when you have new upgrades. When ever I had to backtrack, I usually went in with the mindset of "Oh boy I have all these new upgrades, so I need to be on the look out for places to use them!" Generally, I was not disappointed, although I can agree that traversing Magmore caverns did get quite tedious by the end of the game and the Phazon Mines shattered the difficulty curve. As far as the artifacts of Spirit and Elder go, I've never understood how people had trouble with them. I mean, lets look at the hints: The Artifact of Spirit: "A tall cave stands at Phendrana's Edge. Seek the unseen entrance at its top to find the Artifact of Spirit." If you look at the map, "Phendrana's Edge" is the name of the room it's located in, the room is on the edge of the map, it's elongated, as hinted at by "tall," and if "unseen" doesn't scream X-RAY VISOR, then I don't know what would. They even go as far as to tell you it's at the top. The Artifact of Elder: "Invaders have claimed Phendrana as their own. A Tower sits atop their fortress. Collapse it to reveal the chamber where the Artifact of Elder is held." It's in Phendrana, which excludes the Phazon Mines from the hunt. The three rooms surrounding the artifact are called "East Tower," "Control Tower," and "West Tower." From there, the tower is clearly visible, and collapsing it should only take a matter of time with the scan visor. These cases along with the artifact hunt in general help to illustrate the game's focus on exploration and observation. As you gain upgrades, the way you look at the world changes, and for a game as immersive as Prime, re-exploring the world is worth every moment. When I played through the game, I found all but 3 of the artifacts before the end of the Phazon Mines, so fetching the last few didn't take that long and, consequently, didn't feel like much of a chore to me. Amazing review. I greatly anticipate your look at Prime 2.
@CobalionRider
@CobalionRider 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if anyone else had this issue, but where I got stuck with the Artifact of spirit was reading the hint too literally. There are a couple of little alcoves at the top where I assumed I'd have to look. The correct room is a couple levels below the top, where I hadn't even thought to check my Xray visor. It was admittedly a silly mistake, but it was one of the few places in my first playthrough where I felt the need to check online.
@davisbreci5332
@davisbreci5332 2 жыл бұрын
The more logical conclusion to the tower hint is that the player would have to destroy the tower they were already on, since it is literary called east and west tower, not destroy a completely different tower that looks like a random background detail.
@TheExFatal
@TheExFatal 2 жыл бұрын
I beat the game yesterday, and those hints are not exactly helpful for those two areas. Both times I got the locations right, but how was I supposed to know to juml inside one of the towers, destroy some boxes, look in a tiny window and shoot a rocket? It's cryptic. The Edge one isn't that bad, but it tells you that there's a secret entrance *at the top* of the location, but it's not there, it's somewhere at the center.

Exactly. Backtracking is one of the best parts of the game. Going through to get all the artifacts fully powered up destroying enemies with the plasma beam and getting all these upgrades you could before, its perfect and without to artifact hunt the pacing would be way off with Omega, then ridley, then prime. Let's you soak it in one more time and go on a powertrip.
@Tiana_atr
@Tiana_atr 7 жыл бұрын
So i'm going to have to take some exception to your complaint on having to backtrack for the space jump boots. Replaying the game i found it is suprisingly good at leading you to where you need to go next, including with the space jump boots. When you get the boost ball you head back to Phendrana's hub. There you see ridley fly overhead in the direction of the magmoor cavern's elevator. Not necessarily the best way to show where to go, but it does give you direction so you leave phendrana. Once back in Magmoor caverns, if you keep going east instead of backtracking through the entire caves and chozo ruins you'll find an elevator to the Tallon Overworld. Just follow the path and you'll end up right in the room with the ramp to the space jump boots. If you backtracked through the entirety of magmoor and chozo ruins, it would take 17 rooms to get to the halfpipe. If you went east to the next part of magmoor it would've taken just 10 much smaller rooms than the other direction. If you want to complain about bad backtracking, try the Phendrana Labs after getting the thermal visor. You have to go back through the entire area you literally just went through unchanged except now everything is dark so you use the thermal visor and there's a few metroids that you actually need to actively let out of their cages to fight most of them. There should've been a 2nd faster path that went around the labs that would lead to the boss. Hell the pirate logs say wildlife is getting into the labs through underground tunnels so why not have you go through dark underground tunnels that only wildlife uses that would lead you to the Thardus room that you'll end up in as soon as you backtrack through the labs anyway. That way you avoid backtracking, still force using the thermal visor and even have a lore reason to why this path exists.

Revisiting this video because of Dread. When I played Metroid Prime on the Wii, I also thought the initial super missile input was cumbersome. Then I realized in the settings you could switch A and B. That way shooting feels like an actual gun, and also makes super missile inputs a hell of a lot easier. Which is nice because super missiles are godly powerful in this game.

Eh its not that its hard, it just has a rough battle here and there, the hardest boss (for me personally) was the boost ball guardian, but even then if you know some quick counters to most of its attacks it can be pretty easy. seriously though fuck the boost ball guardian, he is a real bitch to take down, especially in hard mode, although bombing him before he gets a chance to boost is his only real true weakness it really only takes a few super missiles and fully charged light beam shots in normal and a hell of a lot more in hard mode.

i prefere a lot the Prime trilogy version instead of the original titles, mostly for 2 reasons:1- it's much cheaper. 2-the controls are much more immersive. using the wiimote to move your armcannon makes you feel even more immersed in the world/samus's body, Also the fact that they made the morph ball able to jump just by shaking the wiimote like in prime 3 made the mobility with the morphball a lot more fluid, so that you don't have to stop every time to wait for the bomb to explode to jump, and can just... jump.

Actually, Spider ball isn't new in the slightest; it was first introduced in Metroid 2: Return of Samus all the way back in the days of the original Gameboy (fun fact: the Spring Ball and Space Jump were introduced there too ;] ), only in that game it let you attach to any wall whereas here it only works with special tracks. Naturally it's also making a reappearance in the remake, Samus Returns, as well along with its original effect. Either way, this was a pretty great review that I felt said a lot of what it needed to about the flaws and successes of this game (like the pointless backtracking for the space Jump). Great review! :]

Thank you so much for talking about the sequence breaking.The minor tricks aren't too hard to learn and make the game so much more lively and fun. Once you get the wave beam, you can make a series of tricky jumps to skip the spider-ball and get the ice beam in the Chozo Ruins, which you can use to get the plasma beam, even without the grapple beam if you so choose. In fact, you can actually get the grapple beam, plasma beam, power bombs, and even the X-ray visor way before Thardus. The plasma beam melts him even on Hard which makes the boss much more streamlined and fun. You can also get on a ledge with the grapple beam in his room and chill there during the fight, where he can only damage you with his destroyable little rocks, nothing else. If you even want the bosses to do more damage, you can learn how to an underwater ghetto jump to get the artifact in the Wavebuster room and open the bars to the Phazon mines from above with a well placed bomb jump. That way you can completely skip the need to collect gravity suit and the 20% damage reduction it gives you. I tried to beat Omega Pirate without the gravity suit so that when the cutscene plays, he gives it to you instead of the Phazon suit, even if its only cosmetic for that little cutscene. The fight was so hard, but in a good way, except for some minor jank regarding OP's hotboxes :))))))))))))))))))) I could seriously go on and on with this kind of stuff, because honestly, it really changes the way you play the game each and every time you do and I love it for that, which also means I'm pretty timid when it comes to the Trilogy version, knowing that I won't be able to do all these fun little tricks

Good review, King K. I'm in the boat that strongly prefers the Wii version, but like you, I was surprised at how simple it was to adjust to the GameCube controls. I guess it's because I played a lot of Star Fox Assault in my youth, as those two games have essentially the same control scheme. Still, the pseudo dual analog is so much better, and since I was introduced to the subseries via Prime 3, I was already used to the beam/visor switching mechanism by the time I played it. In regards to the sequence breaking, it's important to note that Super Metroid and Metroid Prime approach it differently. Much of Super's sequence breaking stems from abusing wall jumps and the occasional mach ball. My favorite thing is to get the Wave Beam by wall jumping in Norfair; I always do it every time I replay the game. In Metroid Prime, I find that most of the time it's not based around skill with advanced mechanics as much as it is trying to trigger a bunch of glitches that almost never work. For example, no matter how hard I try, I could never trigger the sequence break to get to the Phazon Mines early. I believe there's an elevator in the Chozo Ruins near the Ice Beam that takes you to the entrance of the mines, but there's a gate in the way that you can only open from the Wrecked Frigate side with a boost ball slot. Supposedly, you can use morph ball bombs to glitch through the gate and access the mines early, but I couldn't get it to work no matter how hard I tried. You can also sequence brake by jumping on an obscenely small platforms to cheese your way up to the higher ledge in the morphball room, but that's almost impossible. Point is, in the time it takes you to look up how to do all of this stuff and actually get it to work, you could have just played the game the normal way and done it much faster. Sequence breaking in Metroid Prime isn't as fun or satisfying because of how obtuse and cumbersome it is. Plus, whenever I replay these games, it's always a 100% playthrough, and it's simpler to plan your route when you stick to the game's intended order. That being said, I absolutely agree with your assessment of the backtracking. It's been in every game, but in my opinion, it is at it's absolute worst here. I can get from Ridley's Lair to Tourian in just a few minutes, but getting from Phendrana to Tallon Overworld always takes forever. It's because the game tries to disguise load times using protracted set pieces. You know that room in Magmoor with all those little elevators on the walls that you have to wait for? All those little s-shaped hallways? All of those set pieces are designed to give the game more time to load the bigger rooms on either side, and it does a number on the game's pacing. I will never understand how people could think Echoes has it worse; that is simply a wrong opinion, and I don't say that about a lot of things. The more modular structure of Aether in itself greatly improves on the backtracking of the first game. Anyway, enough rambling. Glad you're getting into the series.

I will concede it's much harder to sequence break. I could only really do the space jump boots early trick. That being said it's still disheartening for the people that actually can pull it off and play the game a different way as a result. That's why I made it a point to criticize Retro's decision to remove it, since it had eliminated a lot of the tedious backtracking for a lot of people. It's also very important in the speed running community, no doubt, who now has to track down the original release to pull off faithful glitches. The point of my argument was that there was no reason to remove the sequence breaks, even if they were harder to perform. There were definitely people that found enjoyment, just as I did when I got the space jump boots early. Thanks btw. Took me way too long to finish. Gonna play the Metroid 2 remake soon because I'm very interested. Also need to play Other M hah

ExoParadigmGamer I still haven't finished this game. you'd think that on the GameCube they would adopt the camera control function of other first person shooters, but sadly no. for that reason I cannot get through certain areas or boss fights because I couldn't quite get around the whole 'hold Z and aim' while I cannot move, and yet have to dodge being fired upon. I eventually gave up and that was years ago. I do plan to pick it up again tho. I just didn't have the patience back then

I turned off "hints" to feel more lost like in Super Metroid, I also turned off "Aim-lock" but this one was a bit of an unnecessary difficulty as I suppose the game is considering you're using "auto-lock". I also beat Metroid Prime 2 like a couple of months a go, this one "is only" for Metroid Fans or at least not as a first metroid game, because is too dense in its Metroid formula, very tedious in some parts which I think only Metroid fans will tolerate or not care(like me)

Artifacts were implemented to solve a problem that is hard to see with their inclusion. I believe Retro talked about it after Metroid Prime 2 was released, a game that had an arguably worse and longer back tracking segment at the end of the game. Without the artifact quest, many late game upgrades don't see a lot of use and the argument comes up that it feels bad to get this kickass plasma beam or x-ray visor and not have a lot of use for them. With the artifact quest it feels like unnecessary padding and back tracking but at least you get to enjoy using all the upgrades the game has to offer. The artifacts in Prime are usually argued to be better than the keys in Prime 2 because you can get more of the artifacts before you reach that segment of the game, saving on some back tracking.
@MastaGambit
@MastaGambit 3 жыл бұрын
I understand it, but it's a cheap attempt at padding. The ACTUAL problem at play here is closing off the main quest of the game too early after the final two powerups. And maybe this is a problem caused by not having enough development time, but a far better solution would be to, e.g. in Prime 1, not opening Phazon Mines at all until you have ALL the powerups, instead of opening it up like ~65% of the way through. Maybe actually make a region boss for Magmoor Caverns and have that be the source of Power Bombs instead. That way Phazon Mines would actually feel like a final area of sorts, where you use all the tools that the game gave you in one massive, three-tiered gauntlet. Then the impact crater key is located in some sort of top secret lab room behind the Omega Pirate. Or hell, maybe even Ridley swoops in and steals it in front of you before flying up to the Chozo Temple and you have to chase after him; that would also give more of a reason to fight him and that boss battle wouldn't be so all of sudden and out of nowhere. Of course as we know, Prime 1 *was* rushed in some respects.

One thing to counter on the backtracking. There are lots of optional upgrades placed between required points, which decreases the actual time between points of interest and increases general engagement. That's not to say it's never a slog, but there's definitely enough to do to make most sections of the game interesting.

I've got to mention that a TON of Super Metroid's sequence breaks (maybe most of them) are not glitch based at all, they're skill and knowledge based. The game very intentionally gives you tools to sequence break, knowing that you might choose to do it, and the devs may not have even been aware of just how many completely glitchless sequence breaks player could pull off. Metroid Prime is a completely different by design. The only sequence breaks it ever had were because of glitches. New releases shouldn't have just removed the glitches, they should have replaced them with legitimate, clever, and difficult sequence breaks. Like maybe the springball combined with perfectly timed bomb jumps is the only way to get you just enough height to reach a newly added ledge that leads to the early space jump boots.

It's probably been pointed out to you multiple times by now, and it's a minor nitpick, but I don't see anyone mentioning it in the top comments so let me just be THAT guy for a moment. You mention multiple times that the Wii remasters of Metroid Prime 1 & 2 are in "HD and widescreen", but the Wii does not output at HD resolution. The resolution supported by the Wii are essentially the same as the ones supported by the Gamecube, just with better widescreen support (if I remember that part correctly). Nintendo only started introducing HD capabilities into their consoles with the WiiU, and even now on the Switch, a lot of their games are not natively running in the full HD resolution of 1920x1080. This is a minor mistake, but I just felt the need to point it out because it turns up multiple times. Anyways, love your channel and your retrospective projects, keep being awesome!

The level design for 1 and 2 for me were the biggest flaws of those titles. Which is a reason why I think most Metroid fans herald it as one of the best in the franchise as you could easily tell apart each area of Zebes. And if you dislike having lore being shoved down your throat & having your handheld in terms if where to go & what to do then Other M probably won't be very fun because it takes what Fusion did and mulitiplies it. Even for all the flaws every title prior to Other M has, at least they don't tell you a weapon isn't usable until Adam authorizes it. For me it's a lot more satisifying of an experience finding an upgrade on my own and exploring news areas than it is knowing an upgrade is already there but you can't use because some guy watching from afar says you can't use it yet.

And by heralding I mean Super Metroid. On related note, Yoshio Sakimoto says the Prime series isn't cannon in the Metroidverse. I don't know if that sort of thing matters to you, but he says those games didn't happen. I really liked the bosses if Prime 1. First, they taught you how to use basic tools of the game. Parasite Queen taught you that sometimes you need to scan things before you can properly lock on to their weak point and to strafe, Wasp Hive teaches you to use RADAR, Plated Beetle teaches you dodging and quick reaction time to hit weak point, etc. But then later bosses take away your crutches. Thardus can't be locked on to normally, Elite Pirates have a window of when they're invulnerable to beam weapons and so you can't just spam-shoot them like you might be used to, Omega Pirate has a specific distance you have to keep from him to avoid getting hit by his cannons or melee attacks and you can't just focus on him the whole time because he summons swarms during his vulnerable stages and you have to worry more about resource management to break his armor plates and deal damage during his vulnerable stages efficiently, etc. Thardus's rolling form is pretty easy to dodge in bipedal mode, and his weakpoints aren't that hard to deal a lot of damage to quickly if you know what you're doing, and his vulnerable rocks always follow the same pattern so once you know the pattern you don't even have to use the Thermal Visor.

As far as people complaining about scans, it might have to do with completionist rewards, i.e. much of it is recorded in a logbook, and if you fill that logbook out you get concept art. Me, I enjoy scanning to the point where I couldn't imagine NOT doing it in any casual run-through, just as I couldn't imagine NOT picking up every Jiggy/Star/Pagie in a quality collectathon.

I think the biomes being close to each other make some amount of sense: + Overworld is part lush, part dying from the phazon. I've heard some refer to it as a "jungle", and maybe it was that at some point, but it definitely isn't at the time it's explored in the game. It's green yes, but there are not a lot of trees or biodiversity present if you take a closer look. The canopies are very sparse, some of the trees are even without folliage and many of the branches seem to twist very unnaturally. It seems like a dying ecosystem, which is exactly what it is. + Chozo Ruins is at a further progression of poisoning, making it seem more of a desert even if it's located right next to the Overworld. They even share some of the plant life, with the giant red acer leaves being prominent in both areas. + Magmoor Caverns is volcanic, so perhaps there is an active volcano nearby. I think it would have made more sense if the caverns were just deep underground, but some of the rooms seem to be open sky. + Phendrana is at a much higher altitude, in mountanous glaciers. Maybe related to the volcanic activity? + Phazon Mines is obviously desolate because of the heavy poison pollution. What annoyed me more is how confusing the overworld map seems to be regarding where the areas are located relative to each other. All of the elevators seem to be strictly vertical, so how are the areas placed horisontally next to each other? Seeing how tall the shafts seem to be, how is the Chozo Ruins not visible high up from Tallon Overworld? And the way elevators are connected also don't match between areas.

Tbh the use of backtracking in this game never really bothered me because I always knew when I was going back to a previous area I knew I was going to find a new upgrade or room in the area that I’ve never seen before and I would get excited on my way to the next destination on what upgrade I would get. Tbh though it was pretty annoying to backtrack across the entire map to find like 2 rooms and get a power up but there’s enough shortcuts for that in my opinion

To be fair about Thardus, as an experienced player myself, he's actually not that hard or even that time consuming at all :p To be fair about _that_ though, I also know a few obscure tricks that the game doesn't tell you about, one is intentionally left up to the player to figure out, and two that seem unintentional: If you get good with doing certain item skips, you can get the Plasma Beam before even ever fighting Thardus, oddly enough, he's weak to the Plasma Beam, taking a ridiculous amount of damage from Plasma charge shots, a single plasma charge shot will knock out a weak point in a single hit, not to mention since the plasma charge shot is the fastest projectile in the game, it's very easy to hit with. The other trick that I think is unintentional is how, when he goes into his ball form, you can drop a few morph ball bombs as he rolls towards you, oddly enough, this reveals the weak points 100% of the time, meaning you can technically defeat him without ever picking up the thermal visor The third trick which is intentional, although up to the player to find out, is how super missiles kill his weak points in one hit, just like the charged plasma shots, which means, if you want an easier time with the fight, without needing to go out of your way to get good with item skips to get the plasma beam super early, what you can do is instead stock up on as many missiles as you can, and when you go into the fight, ignore the thermal visor and simply drop bombs whenever he rolls, which usually happens right after one of his weak points are destroyed. Obviously this is only stuff I know because I've played this game for a good 10+ years, the newer player is going to have a challenging time like you mention. I am curious though, where did you get your information about how skilled Prime players take upwards of 10 minutes to beat Thardus? At least in my playthroughs, he seems to take around 4-5, maybe 7 minutes if I'm just messing around or just not on point that day. Also a bit of trivia on Ridley, if you boost ball into him, he takes a massive crapload of damage(about a good two-thirds of his health bar). Why? No clue, I assume this is a glitch although I'd have to wonder what exactly causes the game to glitch out and make him take _that_ much damage. And... one more thing, I'm going to assume you got really lucky with Metroid Prime phase 2, because that fight can literally take forever, as far as I'm aware, there's no code in the game that tells Prime "Hey, you have to put down phazon and shit metroids now so the fight can progress" I'm a skilled Prime player, but I've had that fight last up to 30 minutes since it's literally random when he'll decide to shit phazon and let the fight continue.

I saw an interview the other day where an ex Retro dev mentioned that they actually saw the Prime series as a reboot and it was only later that Nintendo actually confirmed to them that “no it’s canon, there’s no reason it can’t be” lol. But that’s why the biomes are all pretty much copy-pasted from Metroid Prime. It was also originally in third person, it was someone from Nintendo who suggested they pivot the first person, which ended up being the right choice. All fun facts that weren’t public at the time you released this. Great video, just finished replaying this game through the Switch remaster and I think that version nails the controls perfectly, finally a real twin stick Metroid Prime. Hope they do remasters of 2 and 3 as well.

Not really gonna defend the various backtracking (though being a fan for so long you grow a callous to it and honestly, it's pretty damn bad and a huge slog in Super as well), but I feel like that's just a huge misleading part of the video for the sake of a joke. As someone who played this game numerous times in my life. The backtracking parts were things I never did go through after a few playthroughs. From getting the space jump boots seconds after you land in Tallon Overworld. This opens up so many things you can do from obtaining missiles even earlier to the morph ball early. Kill Flagera faster with a weird glitch. And the sequence breaking continues albeit in unintended ways 90% of the time. If I never how to glitch the game more, I can collect most of the artifacts on the visit to that area.

I hate to break it to ya, but if you hate backtracking so much, then the Metroid games aren't really for you. What I find baffling is that you keep overstating that Super Metroid did this really well, where I think that backtracking in that game was a complete waste of time. Again, at the end of the day, it's all opinion based. But backtracking is usually at the core of a Metroid game, just saying.

You make a valid point, but, usually, Metroid games provide a faster means by which to traverse the map again, either via an alteration of Samus' moveset (i.e. the Speed Booster or Space Jump) or a shortcut in the map that was previously inaccessible à la the Distribution Center chutes in AM2R or the elevators in Prime 2. This streamlines backtracking while still emphasizing exploration, hence why the games don't simply give you a teleporter or make you walk through a hub-esque area, like this game does. This is why backtracking is such a staple in the series - it's not tedious, but it's still immersive.

The one in Prime 2 just sucked because when you do this while doing your 100% item run, most of them have you going out of your way for some thatt ake too much time. Like the one the dark world versions of the room in Temple Grounds before the Agon Wastes elevator Dark World version of that 1 room with the empty item pad that nobody ever goes to in the light world in Temple Grounds The one in the dark under water levels in Torvus bog Both the keys in Dark World Sanctuary Fortress. At least with the first Prime game, most of the Chozo Artifacts will be easy to come by if you're doing a 100% item run. Some of them you will come across before you get the Phazon Suit, which makes it better (Prime 2 doesn't have any keys within your path that are accessible pre-light suit). Only a couple artifacts I felt made me feel i'm going too far out of my way for (Which are the Phazon Mines ones for the most part). Prime 3 does it pretty well with the Energy Cells thing. Not all are required to beat the game, but all are required for 100% run.

Unpopular opinion: At first I hated the hunts as well. When you just wanna get to the end, I can fully understand the hate. But now I actually kinda love it. It is the perfect way to once again run through all the areas of the games, and while looking for the last pieces for your progression, to hunt down the last missing items that were unreachable before. As I always hunt for 100%, it suits my gameplay perfectly. I understand the criticism though.

Ugh, fuck the sky temple keys, here's the thing, I don't like either of the hunts, although I'll say the hunt in Prime 1 is better than the sky temple keys, because at least in Prime 1, the artifacts are located in areas that you would probably want to backtrack to anyway to get some use out of your new upgrades in order to get more missiles, power bombs, etc, the sky temple keys usually have their own rooms dedicated to them, and as such, while you could sometimes get some stuff on the way to the keys, you have little to no indication to go to the areas the keys are placed in in the first place aside from the mandatory "go here to find this thing to continue plot" The main reason being the rooms are usually dead-ends, and because of that, there's little reason to go there, especially since, and I'm bringing this up again, there's basically no upgrades in _any_ sky temple key room, as such, you have little indication to go to those areas naturally :P

I think the exploration is why I prefer Metroid Prime 2 over 1, weirdly. And I know Prime 2 has a few issues of its own regarding exploration, but that being said... ......it certainly feels more unique in terms of exploration and in terms of structure. Prime 1 to me had this very weary "been there done that" feeling that I had as of recent. In both, you explore a research station, fight a boss, escape, land on a lush, verdant area of a planet, and begin exploring an preparing to take down an ultimate evil that is burrowed into the planet. I don't dislike this, don't get me wrong. I mean, it worked for Super Metroid really well, and I do think it was wise to stick with what worked in an attempt to transition this into 3D. However, it's a matter of personal preference, and my preferences lie more in how the world is designed in Prime 2. Especially with regards to the Sky Temple Key hunt. If you know what you're doing, it's actually fairly easy to determine where the keys actually are. Sure, they were also fairly easy to find in Prime 1, but in Prime 1, you only really had the Impact Crater monoliths to rely on to figure out their location, and even then you're not gonna find them out that way all the time, as there are a couple monoliths you can't scan to find the corresponding location of the Artifact. Not to mention, I usually have trouble upon revisiting the game in that I usually forget where some of these Artifacts are.In Prime 2, the Keybearer is always located in close proximity to the key itself. At most, they're one chambre away from it, and even that is seldom the case. Not only that, but in the Light world, you can always find out where the Ing Caches are by using the Dark Visor. If anything, the only real problem by that point is actually getting these Keys, as they require a fairly large runaround to get them all, although this can be mitigated slightly by making your way through each area of Aether in a sensible order. Also, thank you, KZbin recommendations for allowing me to stumble on this here channel. This is a really good style of retrospective reviews, and whilst I don't agree 100% with everything, I do at the least see where you're coming from, and it's really interesting to hear something from another avenue. Keep it up, my dude!

When it comes to the similarities between Super and Prime, I think they're justified by the fact that Prime is the first 3D title in the series. It makes sense for the devs to wanna' start with aesthetically familiar locations to not only help win fans over, but to also have a solid reference and starting point when figuring out how to add a third dimension to Metroid's gameplay.

I appreciate your honesty with your opinions, but I just can't agree with most of what you said. I own and have played all of the Metroid titles and I just cannot understand how you would find any of the 2D games, except the first two in original formats, to be more difficult than Metroid Prime. Judging by your gameplay footage, it appears that you're just really bad at both games, especially with Super Metroid. And as far as the backtracking goes, you fail to acknowledge that there is just as much backtracking in Super Metroid, plus it doesn't take nearly as long as you exaggerate. You can get from Phendrana to Tallon Overworld in about 5 minutes, trust me, I've timed it. And that nitpick about super missiles on the wiimote is easily fixed if you just swap the A and B buttons like most sane people do. There's just nothing more natural than a trigger for an FPS.

Only if the fight is engaging enough. The problem is not boss length but rather the repetitive nature of the patterns combined with the excessive length makes it a bit poor. The first boss of majoras mask was a great example of a lengthy but enjoyable boss fight.

One of the first things I did in the Wii version is switch the A and B buttons. Jumping with A and using the B trigger for shooting is so much more intuitive, fixes the missile problem, and honestly should be the default.

Metroid Prime is my favorite Metroid. I started with the original on NES, but never beat it until recently. I have played every entry in the series since then, but Metroid Prime is my favorite. The atmosphere is immersive, the combat is quite solid, and the controls feel appropriate. I am terrible at FPS on consoles, I need my keyboard and mouse, so Prime's lock-on feature and combat based on strategy rather than skill helped me enjoy it much more. Plus the game is just GORGEOUS. They put so many fine details into it: Samus' face flashing inside her visor, the raindrops bouncing off her arm cannon, the steam effects and slime splatters across the screen. These helped draw me in and were very nice additions. Yeah, some of the bosses can get tedious, but that's what Prime was about. It wasn't a fast-paced action game. It was more akin to a slower-paced adventure game with some action sequences, and since combat was more about strategy and endurance, rather than speed and skill, the longer fights made sense. Great video.

I don't really see why anything that has any backtracking is immediately frowned upon.. Specially metroid, the whole point of it all is to empower you, to dispatch enemies that gave you trouble much quicker and make you feel stronger the more you progressed. I understand the disliking it, but when a game is deliberately designed to lure you in, i don't see why people have a problem with traversing this rich, expertly crafted believable world. Another point and one than may be a little more of a crapshoot.. just moving feels good and there are a lot more sequence breaking techs that enhance that, so for a veteran player like myself that has played this over 20 times the backtracking can serve as a challenge hell, you can get everything in the game without ever needing the gravity suit or the thermal visor. Much like super, i don't believe a lot of the sequence breaking tech was unnintentional, in fact only the most evident and easy to pull of where patched, everything else is still there so i believe it was built with that in mind. I don't ever bactrack anymore (except for some artifacts that are actuallly impossible to get without first hitting a certain trigger elsewhere).

Yeah I don't see why backtracking is frowned upon necessarily. Prime just didn't handle it well because Samus walks so slowly and it takes an eternity to get anywhere while playing normally. Super Metroid handled it perfectly.

My buddy loves to just run Metroid prime in his free time, he sometimes speedruns, sometimes randomizers. The game looks great, especially with some of the breakdowns I have seen of how the levels essentially route you onto particular paths. Honestly been thinking about playing through each game in release order. Side note it never gets old bringing up other M to Metroid fans, it's like bringing up the prequels to star wars fans, except there isn't even the small subset that enjoys it despite it's flaws.

In the option menu, you can switch the A and B buttons. This way you can use Super Missiles easier. You can also toggle the the cursor lock when you lock the enemy. This way the cursor stays in the center of the screen while locking an enemy or other things. This makes Phendrana Drift spikes easier to deal with, because they need crasy high precision since they weren't designed for Wiimote gameplay. You can also change the opacity of the HUD and the opacity of the helmet. (this is a good feature for Dolphin VR, this fixes some issues)
