I know a fun fact about Chozo Ruins. A dev from Retro Studios once did a presentation at a college that a friend of mine attended, where he explained that the map geometry for the Hive Totem room and the surrounding corridors was loaded incorrectly and was slanted at an angle entirely on accident. But once he entered that giant dark green chamber, the visual effect was so profound that he realized he had to leave it like that.
@TW33NSW4GGaming3 жыл бұрын
That's AMAZING!! I always loved how that room is slanted, super interesting!! Thank you for sharing. I love hearing cool bts stories like that. I think the slant really helped cement the dream state while playing in the ruins as well as create that general sense of unease.

Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are probably my favorite games of all time. I greatly enjoy the duality of these two games, particularly in terms of how their stories are contrasted. In Prime 1, Samus is too late to save the Chozo, only arriving to time to save the planet itself. In Prime 2, she arrives quite possibly hours before the final defeat of the Luminoth at the hands of the Ing. She's presented the opportunity to do on Aether what she could not on Tallon IV: save lives. It's a choice she doesn't hesitate to make and it's what solidifies her status as a hero.
@TW33NSW4GGaming3 жыл бұрын
I really like that breakdown! I'm definitely going to quote you on that in the Echoes video if you're ok with that.

This is something I often interpreted, myself. Samus wasn't even _born_ when Tallon IV got hit by the Leviathan meteor fifty years prior. When she became planet-side on Aether, the Luminoth were, quite literally, two rooms away from being extinct. I love how cautious she was around U-Mos during their first conversation, and having Samus make a back-handed wave while walking past the bowing Luminoth during the epilogue is such a character-defining moment for her.
@tgr34233 жыл бұрын
@@Arena1999 The casual ease in which she saves entire civilizations and waves it off like it's just another Tuesday is what defines her as a strong female badass. I wish Sakamoto realized that when writing Other M.
@Insert_Bland_Name_Here Жыл бұрын
Another interesting contrast between the first two Prime games is that, in Metroid Prime, Samus doesn't actually accomplish her objective, even after defeating Metroid Prime at the end of the game. She saves Tallon IV, sure, but she didn't wipe out the Space Pirates entirely and she didn't save the Chozo on Tallon IV. She only saved a planet so the indigenous lifeforms can at least survive. But in Echoes, Samus' mission is basically over within the first 30 minutes of the game. Once you reach the crashed Galactic Federation ship and find the entire crew dead, her mission is complete. She was tasked with finding out if the team sent to the planet is dead or alive, and within 30 minutes of starting the game, you know the answer to that. It's only because Dark Samus and the Ing stole some of her abilities, that Samus decides to stay on the planet longer, and then upon running into U-Mos, she decides to try and save the Luminoth species. She could have just turned around and left, accepting a couple of losses, but she *chose* to stay and *chose* to risk her own life for a species she didn't even know anything about.

That’s a really powerful thought, a good story deserves good media. Can you imagine the entertainment industry finding a great story and first thinking, “What media best suits this? Should we make a movie, a video game, a tv series, write a book, a comic book? What best tells the story?” Instead movie makers make movies and game designers make movie adaptations.

You really covered Metroid Prime's story and its aesthetics exceptionally well. I have always wanted to be interviewed to talk about my experiences playing games like Metroid Prime and Half-Life 2 when they were released. I remember just how impactful they were and still are. With so many people too young to have been able to play Metroid Prime at eight years old and Half-Life 2 at nine, it helps for people our age, who were present during these games' releases, to collectively tell people what it was truly like to trek through these immersive, seemingly boundless experiences. I do have somewhat of a reputation in the Half-Life community, so I am a relevant voice. I worked on Project Borealis, Opposing Force 2, Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar Redux, and Conscript. Let me know if you want to talk about Metroid Prime 2 and other older games. I also compose music and have access to the instruments Kenji Yamamoto used to compose the Metroid Prime ost. That has always been one of my favorite subtitles of the game and I feel its really immerses you in her shoes. The hud and visor are also some of my favorite things about the game. It just puts you in her helmet. Ive always thought this game would be amazing in vr for that reason. Halo does a similar thing with being able to see Chief's helmet.

I used to like it a lot, though it was never quite my favourite song in the game. But for whatever reason, it aged poorly for me. Objectively I would say I still like it, but I don’t really want to hear it outside the context of the game anymore; unlike the soothing sounds of Phendrana Drifts that I could still listen to for hours on end.

I play and record the game with a document opened on another monitor where I take notes with timestamps on all the things I want to come back to and write the script on. Once I have the entire playthrough recorded, I come back and turn the notes into functioning script pieces and then finally come back over again to write the whole script out. It's a bit labor intensive which is why these videos takes so long but they are so much fun! I'm about 50% of the way done through the script and 90% of the way through the playthrough for Echoes right now 😊
