This is the famous US Metroid Prime commercial featuring a live actor and some great special effects that sync perfectly with the first-person action. The commercial was shot by Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City) in Sydney, Australia, supposedly in the same location where scenes from The Matrix had been shot. If you were lucky, you might have seen this one in the movie theater. Brought to you by the Metroid Database with special thanks to Metroid Recon.

Will Hill OKAY! Metroid is the first 3D Metroid game released on November 15, 2002. It was developed by Nintendo-owned Retro Studios and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube. It is officially classified by Nintendo as a first-person adventure, rather than a first-person shooter, due to the large exploration component to the game. It was also the first Metroid game to be released since Super Metroid, which was released nearly eight years earlier, It is said to be one of the greatest games of mankind.

The best part about the Prime series is that you actually feel like you are in the Suit. Other FPS that have power armor never give you the feel that you are in power armor. In Prime your visor get's static when you are hit. You can see your reflection in certain lighting effects. Your HUD actually makes sense because you are viewing the world through a computer system.

Metroid Prime is the EPITOME of a great game: It features a well thought out storyline, complex puzzle solving which requires critical thinking, heavily detailed graphics (for it's time), hard-core fight scenes that don't get old or repetitive, and allows the user to learn more through reading logs set up throughout the game... It's not only a badass game, it was designed from the ground-up to teach people to think critically and time is well spent.
@AzazelZaphorOmega

+Jeb Eldridge Not to mention beautiful settings and soundtrack, all of which give this melancholy sense of isolation that builds upon the dread in this game. This and Super Metroid do that flawlessly on their respective platforms. Sad that those games, being decades old, are STILL better than the latest spin off game, Federation Force.

***** Sunshine was awesome. Smash Bros. was a lot of fun but after playing it so many times it is pretty repetitive. The single player story mode WAS pretty fun though. Metroid Prime was the best game of all the games I played on the gamecube. So far, Half-Life 2 has been the best game I have played on the PC. Doom 3 was awesome too, and so was Far Cry. Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004 rock. After that...the only games that have really blown me away are Far Cry 2, maybe Crysis (maybe.), Bullet Storm and partially Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. FEAR was pretty good...but I can't believe how badly rated the expansions were. It is highly difficult for me to decide between Metroid Prime and Half-Life 2. I would probably have even more awesome memories of Doom 3 if I had gotten to play the full game in 2004 or 2005. I only got the play the demo in surround. SUrround was AWESOME. I never actually owned Doom 3 until about October 2008. Even then it was my Uncle Dennis' copy. I went to the game section of Wal Mart and would say I wanted Doom 3 with my own birthday or Christmas cash. My mom totally wouldn't let me get it.

I remember seeing it as a kid and thinking Samus was a guy (cause of the guy talking) and thinking the game would be darker/scarier than it actually is. This trailer has an Alien/Ridley Scott feel. Such an ominous scene on the outside of the base and a dark and evil atmosphere on the inside.

I had beaten and completed this on hard. The enemies and bosses were much tougher taking damage inflicted on them. Since they couldn’t develop a Metroid game for the 64, they first made it 3D on the Gamecube instead. What an epic game.

You know this was an legendary commercial when you can remember it 20 years later. My 15 year old self thought this was a trailer for an new Sci-Fi show or movie. Damn it this almost makes me want to buy a Nintendo Switch to play this game. Might need to wait for Nintendo's next console.

That's Kraid, boss of Brinstar. He was supposed to be in Metroid Prime but he had to be scrapped due to time constraints. In the months leading up to the release of MP the staff of Retro Studios were working 60 hour weeks just to get it done on time.

Those morphball sound effects are fucking incredible along with the rest of the sound design/soundtrack and voice over. The monologue has writing on par with a well produced film. I miss when Nintendo had an edge to them before they turned full kiddy mode.

Correction- Metroid Prime was released in 2002, Metroid Prime 2 in 2004, and Metroid Prime 3 in 2007. The original Metroid was released in the 80's. Please look up the release dates before spouting off.

The original came out in 1986 when the NES was originally around. Metroid Prime came in 2002. Though the original Metroid was playable on it if you completed Metroid Fusion and linked the gameboy advance connector to the gamecube.

Directed by Alex Proyas back when he was still known as the visionary director of Dark City and The Crow and was a perfect choice for the ad. Unfortunately, since then none of his output has yet to live up to these, often received so poorly that most people forget about him. I always thought that this ad was a really cool glimpse at what the guy was still capable of, even if his reputation as the master of dark, moody scifi had diminished (not to mention a glimpse at what a Metroid film might look like). We now know Proyas could do it…but good luck finding an actress willing to hide her face for the majority of a movie! 🤣
