Here's some irony for you. The biggest 9th inning comeback in baseball history is from down 8 runs. It happened in 1990 at Dodger Stadium, to the Dodgers. Who did it to them? The Phillies. You know who played for that Phillies team? John Kruk. In fact, Kruk had the biggest hit of that incredible comeback. His 3 run homer tied it with Philly down to their last out. Nobody on the planet should have known better than this man. He should've been the last person in the world to write the Mets off.

This game was crazy. Nola pitched a spectacular game. 7 innings, one or two earned runs. I went to bed after his outing in the 8th. For some sick reason, I wasn’t surprised when I woke up the next morning to see they had lost. The bullpen was atrocious early on. As a Phils fan, I can tell you that with Girardi, this was a dead team. Completely dead team. Whatever Thomson did lot a spark for this team and they made a spectacular run, breezing through STL, then ATL, then SDP. To beat the Braves so easily (3-1) was truly something.
@jack-26042 жыл бұрын
The thing that makes Gary, Keith and Ron so special is that they bring a legitimate insight to every game. They don’t just say typical shit that a dad watching from home would say. They use their major league experience and actually add perspective to every game you watch. Unlike the Phillies commentators who are bland and dull. Not only that but Gary, Keith and Ron are so extremely unbiased when they are talking abt both teams. Even when you watch them in the booth, half the time when the Mets score the only one celebrating is Gary because he’s a homegrown Mets fan.

@J Ygb you can be a homer for your team as an announcer that's fine. Even SNY pulls for their team. Biggest difference though is that SNY fully acknowledges and talks about the other team and their accomplishments, talks baseball to see what the other team could do if they're in a jam, they know the history of each opposing player and team, and best of all they don't openly talk bad about the other team's fans. Heck they got on the Mets case years back when they did a completely unnecessary HBP against the Nationals.

I listened to these guys a lot when I lived in Philly. He also pulls for the home team. Actually GKR, the Dodger’s announcers (continuing on Vin Scully’s legendary example) are among a few announcers that don’t explicitly “pull” for the home team. Whenever I have to listen to most other announcers, it is like nails on a chalkboard, even if they aren’t playing the Mets. Gary gets excited when good things happen for the Mets, and sounds down when bad things happen but there is no “let’s see if we can score a couple of runs here” or “let’s get this guy out and finish the game” stuff.

In 1969, after game 5 of the World Series, Earl Weaver was in his office in the visiting clubhouse with some reporters. One of them asked him if he hadn’t thought that the Orioles could hold onto their late lead in that game and take the series back to Baltimore. Earl took a sip from his cup, and then said this - “No, you can’t do that, you can’t run a few plays into the line and kill the clock, you’ve got to throw the ball over the g-ddamn plate and give the other man his chance; that’s why baseball is the greatest game of all“. This game is one of the best examples of that.

What a joyous moment this was as a Mets fan, just that I heard it on a good real broadcast, between howie rose and Josh and then Gary Keith and Ron
