As a Mets fan, yes I would say the Mets are more the "blue collar" team of NY. The Yankees will always be the Yankees: A world renowned, winning organization. But the one thing the Mets have going for them is the absolute EUPHORIA we as fans will feel when they finally do break through and win a title. Yankees fans will never experience that feeling, because they win so much.
