As a Cardinals fan, this trade came as a shock. I'll never forget that day. The Cards were in first place by 4 games at the time of the trade and then hall-of-fame manager Whitey Herzog decided to make an example of Keith by trading him. This was the second but not the last awful trade that Herzog would make in his tenure with the Cardinals. Keith has often commented over the years on the first awful Herzog trade, which was trading hall of famer Ted Simmons, Pete Vukovich, and hall of famer Rollie Fingers to the Brewers for prospects and Sixto Lescano. If Fingers hadn't gotten hurt before the World Series the Brewers likely would have won instead of the Cards. And trading Hernandez was an even worse trade. Herzog traded his best player for NOTHING! And he's a hall of fame manager? in Cooperstown?? He barely won one World Series. (Keith had the game-winning RBI in game 7) Keith transformed the Mets after the trade and over the years especially recently with the passing of Herzog has always spoken respectfully about his time in St. Louis even though he has every right to be critical. Let's face it Herzog made huge trading mistakes in his time with St. Louis. To his credit, Herzog managed to trade Ozzie for Garry Templeton, obtain Willie McGee for Bob Sykes, John Tudor for next to nothing, and Jack Clark, the same. But later on his trading Andy Van Slyke and Terry Pendleton the latter who won the league MVP year shows that Herzog was at best average in trades and that's being very generous.
