I’m not even a New York sports fan and I watch this every few months whenever I need to laugh. This is epic. I think why it has stood the test of time as his greatest rant is because it felt natural. It didn’t feel contrived at all, like some rants on sports talk radio seem to be. He was perfectly calm at the beginning. He built on that until he exploded and talked himself into being pissed off. This is so friggin amazing
@randomteacher6199 Жыл бұрын
Without question the climax of this rant is Don shouting "ED KRANEPOOL" over a picture of Tom Seaver's 300th win as a White Sox. Perfect imagery.
@WaltGekko2 ай бұрын
Which was on of all days "Phil Rizzuto Day" at Yankee Stadium. GEORGE as I remember was furious about it, so much so they eventually did a second "Phil Rizzutto Day" (though the Yanks did invite Lindsey Nelson to call the 9th inning of Seaver's 300th). One of the biggest ironies of Seaver's career that he got his 300th in Yankee Stadium. Another irony was four years later he actually was calling play-by-play for the YANKEES.

RIP Ed Kranepool. Don said his only regret about this rant is that it came across to some as though he was mocking Ed, when Ed was actually one of his all-time favorite Mets (as he says towards the tail end of this video.) Still remains one of the greatest radio rants of all-time -- and clearly comes from a genuine place of affection for Kranepool and the Mets franchise, rather than the usual contrived sports radio "hot takes."

I remember all these players that he mentioned. I had Kranepool baseball cards back in 1979! Dave Magadan.. didn't he go 4-4 in his first game as he replaced Keith Hernandez at first who wasn't feeling well that night and everyone was calling Keith Wally Pipp (a reference to the guy Lou Gehrig replaced at first)? As a long-time Mets fan, I remember all these guys, and Don was right on the money with his rant. None of home-grown talent ever really panned out for us. Darryl + Doc having World Series wins and no-hitters with the Yankees was just one more twist of the knife. Reyes jumping ship as soon as he won a batting title only to come crawling back when no other team wanted him was another. If ever an organization in baseball was snakebit, it has to be the New York Mets. From their inception through today, no other team has been plagued by bad leadership, bad trades, bad karma, bad everything than this team.

The Mets have had two great championship years. Some teams have zero years. So what no great player played his whole career with them. I guess David Wright is the closest for them. Loyalty is great but it rarely happens... players to team/ teams to player. I get the lifelong Met fan frustration... but considering the pressure cooker that town is, their history is no surprise. From "69 to '86 is probably their best stretch, overall.

So about those forever players. Ronald Torreyes left the Yankees about 4 months after this rant. Greg Bird was gone a year later. Clint Frazier (not mentioned but was a big part of that group of young Yankee players that never panned out) was DFA'd in 2021. Miguel Andujar and Gary Sanchez were both off of the team by the end of 2022. In 2023, Luis Severino left the Yankees to go pitch for The Mets (lol), and by the end of 2024, Gleyber Torres will most likely be playing for another team too. The only actual forever player on that team was Aaron Judge, who, funny enough, came pretty close to becoming a San Francisco Giant in 2022. Both of the Nationals forever players were gone within 4 years of this rant, and for the Stros, Correa and Springer both left to go play for new teams too. Turns out, "forever" is a pretty hard bar to meet. Time works in funny ways. RIP Ed Kranepool 🙏.
