Man, Elden Ring really is Bloodborne 2...
One of the biggest lore revelations from the Elden Ring DLC involve Metyr, who we learn is the daughter of the Greater Will itself and the mother of all Two Fingers and the Fingercreepers. But I think Metyr is an even more important figure than we might have realized.
In this video, I make the case for why Metyr, the Mother of Fingers, was also the mysterious god that fled Dragonlord Placidusax. I also think she was attacked by the Nox, with a piece of her becoming the Fingerslayer Blade. After all, what better way to harm the Greater Will and its vassals than with a piece of the Greater Will’s own kin?
So join me as I explain the lore and story for Metyr, the Mother of Fingers.

Hey yinz! I thought I’d address two common critiques of the theory outlined in the video: “The Fingerslayer Blade was born of a corpse, so it obviously can't be Metyr" However, the Fingerslayer Blade was “a blade said to have been born of a corpse.” Note the “said." In other words, it's hearsay and a belief in the Lands Between that the Fingerslayer Blade was made out of a corpse, not necessarily a confirmed fact. And the base game has already pulled something similarly with the fell god and the One-Eyed Shield: “Once worshipped by the giants, this evil deity is believed to have been slain by Queen Marika.” And having LEGEND FELLED appear instead of GOD SLAIN, would also make sense since Metyr was able to escape our attacks and is presumably still alive at the other side of the summoned microcosm. “Metyr isn't called a god, so she can't be the god of Placidusax” Tbh, I really wasn't expecting that much pushback on this point which is why I was so matter-of-fact in the video. (Skill issue I suppose!) Again, she is the daughter of the Greater Will, which is the creator deity of the universe. (This was first raised by Hyetta and then confirmed by Count Ymir in the DLC.) And as the creator of the universe, this puts the Greater Will in a whole separate category above other gods. And the game all but confirms that the Fingers are divine. Remember, they have the power of benediction and can restore Great Runes at *Divine* Towers. (Fwiw, the Divine Towers were also called the towers of the gods in the 1.00 version.) Meanhile Marika's and Radagon's Scarseals “represent the lifelong duty of those chosen by the gods,” which, coupled with the new dialogue by Count Ymir, is almost certainly a reference to the Fingers choosing Marika. So if Metyr's parent is a creator deity and her children are divine, I don't think it's a stretch at all to assume that Metyr would also be a god. Hope that clears things up! After reading all those comments, I’m now planning to do a video on hearsay and FromSoft lore as well as a census/tier list for all of the different gods and divine entities in Elden Ring. So do keep those comments and discussion flowing!

the fingerslayer blade looks extremely similar to sacred relic sword tho, you can see the helix legs/double blades, its just broken and tarnished. the fingerslayer blade even has the guard that looks like an arm. in a side by side comparison, they are VERY similar. im a bit fuzzy on the details about the nox, but they were trying to create their own divinity, so maybe when they failed/got punished by the GW, they used the remnants of their self-made god into the fingerslayer blade, to attempt to strike back against two fingers/GW?
@AristasTheMonsterHunter

@@ConstrictorDevlin Another thing that is a little off is that the Nox came much after Farum Azula. I alwais thought that the fingerslayer was made from the Nox version of Marika, wich at a certain point betrayed the GW and was killed, only to then be turned into a weapon by its kin, by that time Placidusax had already fell off as Elden Lord, wich meant that his god consort already left, wich could still be Mityr, the quistion would be why she left? Could Bayle have something to deal with it?
@ConstrictorDevlin
@ConstrictorDevlin 2 ай бұрын
@@AristasTheMonsterHunter Metyr is a vassal of the greater will, and despite being broken and abandoned by the GW, she still loyally awaits another communion, which makes me think that she was unlikely to have positioned herself as a god to placidusax. maybe whatever caused Metyr to get broken could have also been related to whatever happened to Placidusax's god, or maybe it happened shortly after she made landfall in the lands between and she got broke nvery early on. also, Metyr seems to prefer working from the shadows, considering she works through Two Finger proxies rather than directly. havent really looked into Bayle lore yet, but he might have attacked Placidusax because of him getting abandoned by his god. cant say im too sure about the timeline of these events yet either.

The greater will is one of many outer gods. Not THE outer god. The greater will did not create the lands between, it probably didn’t even create the erdtree. It really just showed up and staked a claim. There are other Outer gods constantly messing with it’s plans, it’s Rannis entire ending. The moon is a different outer god to the greater will and she is usurping it entirely when she separates herself from its influence by killing the fingers. The fingers being off spring of the greater wills daughter. IE the greater will did NOT create the universe nor is it even the only being at its level

saying that "said to" is evidence against something isn't very compelling... It goes both ways, its neither confirmation nor denial of something. Regardless it'd be more likely that the "blood drenched fetish" was used *against* metyr since it is the only way to harm the vassals of the greater will... The assault on metyr with the item being the potential catalyst for her inability to communicate with the greater will, severing her vassalage in the process? The fact she could no longer commune with the greater will would likely also be why she was sealed away in the lands of shadow along with all the finger ruins... I also don't believe that Metyr flees. She has the same death particles of every other boss/large enemy that turns to dust, she's merely consumed by the collapsing star/microcosm she holds in her tail... Saying that Metyr is not *stated* to be a god is also a fair argument against her being any Lord's god as what a God is is one of the few well defined things in Elden Ring (so far)... A god is a vessel for the dominant order of the world. Marika is a god because she's the vessel of the elden ring and the golden order. Melania had the potential to become a god (goddess of rot) because she's the vessel of the scarlet rot, Miquella becomes a god by becoming the vessel for his new desired order, he likely could have become a goddess like Melania could by embracing his "fate" to become St. Trina, a goddess of sleep... There's room for debate but that's what it should be, a debate. Speaking matter-of-factly on anything in Elden Ring is a surefire way to look like you're putting your whole foot in your mouth, because we don't have the full story, far less than anything we ever had for Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Everyone misses something at some point and many many things are up for interpretation. The ELden Ring loretuber trend of speaking like they've got it all worked out is becoming a serious issue for reasonable discussion and debate about the potential for actually piecing together the lore of this game...

Ngl hard disagree on this one. An Elden Lord (Placidusax) is a consort to the god of the current order that acts as the vessel of the Elden Ring (Elden Beast). Metyr already has, or had her purpose which is completely different from a god. If Metyr was a god of her own order then she would have been an Empyrean as well, and that just doesn't make any sense because the Two Fingers are the ones selecting the Empyreans and obviously they can't do that in this case because well... Metyr is the one who created them. And if we are to believe that Metyr came before the Elden Beast then the theory seems even less likely to be true. Also, when you defeat Metyr you get the "Legend Felled' and not the "God Slain" message. It's also worth noting that the fingerslayer blade is made from a corpse and Metyr is obviously alive until we end her.

Also something interesting to discuss is that the cathedral where Metyr is located it's called Manus Metyr; and the cathedral, where we find Ranni after killing "her fingers", it's called Manus Celes. I just completed her quest yesterday again, and those fingers look exactly the same as the fingers of Metyr that hold the microcosm in her attacks, only crooked after Ranni's violence. They are also way bigger and thick than any other fingers we get to see. It seems like there is more to those fingers underground. So this should mean, Celes is another Mother of fingers, and Ranni kills it by performing the cursemark ritual, so Celes is completely dead. This should mean that no more fingers to ever be born in The Lands Between, which means that, in Ranni's ending, the following Elden Lord, after you leave with Ranni, shouldn't have any direct influence from the fingers,a apart from the Thre-fingers and the Roundtable, but those are rotten. If Metyr was veiled in the Land of Shadows, that should mean that the fingers in The Lands Between needed to have a mother to reproduce and keep guiding the gods and demigods, so that should be Celes. Is Celes a daughter of Metyr, fully developed? Or is she also daughter of The Greater Will? EDIT: Also the arena where we fight Metyr is strikingly similar to that of the Elden Beast.

Manus just means hand in Latin, and though I don't know about Latin declinations, I'm pretty sure Celes means "sky" or "heaven" (or rather, "of the sky" or "of heaven"). If true, this explains one of the greatest remaining questions after the revelations of the DLC, Why did the Greater Will abandon The Lands Between? Well, the nox made a weapon capable of harming the Greater Will, but the Nox don't exactly have space travel, do they? And now that they're sealed underground, it's not likely they'll ever develop it, and thus the Greater Will, who resides in space and sends meteors, is safe from a weapon that could kill it, as long as it leaves The Lands Between alone. It's just a pragmatic move to make.

We don't know if any of the information she gave to Marika is accurate because it has been hundreds of years since she communicated with The Greater Will. Placidusax originally had more heads that were torn off in the battle. Placidusax is waiting for his God's return, which could be anything. So yeah, Lovecraftian's horrors are back on the menu. Metyr being a daughter means the Greater Will is not a concept but an outer god, the supreme deity of the microcosm in which the world of Elden Ring was created from "stardust" (Ymir's dialogue). The Greater Will created the microcosm as its personal universe to rule upon, had its daughter spread its Word until suddenly it stopped talking to her. So basically the Fingers were just telling what they heard from their mother to the people of the Lands Between, to Marika specifically. Until the Greater Will ceased to send messages to Metyr so the Fingers stopped talking as well. This makes me think the Fingers will never talk again to anyone, not even to Enia because no one would answer the Fingers' call. There's no one out there to guide the people of the Lands Between. So Ranni's ending still is the best ending: no more fingers, no more outer gods but just the moon, like sailors we will be guided by moonlight and the very stars into the future.

Okay so Miquella wanted Radahn dead right? So he could take his soul and make it his consort. He sends Malenia to kill the ‘mightiest demigod’. Malenia ends up getting impaled and blooming, wiping out Caelid. Romina is the one in charge of Scarlet Rot. Romona is guarding the item you need to burn to reach Miquella. Is it possible Romina and Miquella were working together? Miquella sends his coincidentally sick scarlet rot infested sister on essentially a suicide run so she can nuke Radahn? iirc dlc kinda suggests there isn’t a real Rot Goddess, it’s all Romina who revived the religion and is in control of the Rot. Idk, I’m kinda thinking Miquella took advantage of the rot in Malenia rather than ever trying to heal her

Also the reason why the Fingerslayer cant be part of her is the symple anstomy of the blade. Look at it, look at sacred relic sword too. Bayle's connection to the Nox could be him being "made" by them. Look at his chin and compare it to a dragonkin soldier. Maybe he was their best attempt? Additionally he doesn't seem to have lost his second pair of wings and legs, instead having had only two of each and losing part of them during his fight with placidusax. This in combination with his lack of stone scales seems to be like an imperfect copy. This also would explain how his bloodline was started. The only thing that doesn't fit for me is his fire, but that could have some connection to his character maybe?

Good theory. I question if the GW is dead, or in a weakened state. One of Metyr's attacks has her shooting two energy beams in opposite directions from a black hole looking sphere. IRL, if a Star is big enough, when it dies it can either explode in a super nova, or it ejects the majority of its remaining mass. What does that look like? Two beams of energy shooting off in opposite directions. This phenomenon is called a Gamma Ray Burst. All that is left is either a blackhole, or a Neutron Star, which is a very tiny but incredibly dense object.

I've always liked the theory that placidusax's god is the god of Death, referred to by the twinbird kiteshield. There is an emblem on the outside of Malliketh's arena that appears to depict the twinbirds, which perhaps links him to Death before he became the rune's keeper later on. We also see the obvious reverance of death in the deathbirds and much of the crucible culture. There is plenty of other data supporting that thought, but not the point of my comment. Moving on. I'd also note that people have theorized the Nox may have attempted to forge their own gate of divinity along with their own lord, as depicted by the altar with bodies all over it (some of which look like messengers from bloodborne), which is right next to the room in which we get the mimic tear. This is what people think was the affront that caused the Greater Will's ire; but it may have been multiple things that drew its ire- perhaps it was a response to their cumulative actions, sure. That all being said, the theory you present here is quite interesting. I'd be interested in how one might relate the wormfaces that we find in Farum Azula to their counterparts in the finger ruins. Perhaps this could be representative of a connection between them? I'd also love to see a closeup of metyr- is there a place where we might see a wound, where something was cut from her? What about proximity of the finger ruins to the eternal cities? Or finger creepers underground? I think evaluating these things might bear fruit!

I'm starting to think that maybe the greater will IS the cosmos. Think about it, Miriam says all things can be conjoined in the greater will, there's the theory you mentioned of Astel having been sent by the grater will, and of course the Elden Beast itself looks like it's made of golden stars. I'll have to think more on this, but it's a neat theory.
@wr5488
@wr5488 2 ай бұрын
This is my thought!! I don’t think there is a Greater Will, it’s just a broad blanket ‘humanizing’ of the cosmos. Astel, Elden Beast, Fingers, they’re all aliens. Astel crashing into Nokron isn’t a ‘punishment from god’ it’s just where the creature landed. There’s lots of Astel in the game, they just seem like insects in various stages of life. Metyr probably does have a crazy powerful father, but I’m guessing it’s just a larger grander alien. Elden Beast is a cosmic parasite that set itself up in the Erdtree. Like Metyr’s father has only sent one message and is dark from then on out… but Elden Beast the vassal of the Greater Will is around and not communicating? I think they’re all different things that are kinda being lumped together. Fingers and ‘Golden Order’ stuff are from Metyr, but the actual Elden Ring/Beast are a different set.

A few things slightly wrong with analysis but overall very good. I think a very big factor that's wrong is that the fingerslayer blade originated from Metyr mainly because the fingerslayer blade is stated to have came from a corpse and Metyr is still very much so alive despite being damaged. Although most likely she was damaged by said fingerslayer blade by the Nox. However I will say that Placidusax's scales are able to hurt gods and such like the greater will due to their connection with Farum Azula as the scales could very well distort time. My theory is that whomever the fingerslayer blade originated from most likely came from Farum Azula.

I think the boss fight with Metyr is related to the two fingers at the round table standing straight up and not communicating. She fled, she no longer communicats with the other vassels. The weapon skill Kowtowers Resentment states its a violent bow which the resentment can be charged. Metyr uses the same color/animation of the weapon skill during the boss fight and we don't see it anywhere else Shes resentful for being injured by someone or something trying to exert power over her and force her to bow before them. Which may have been an unsuccessful attempt to break the elden ring or greater will. I think Marika had something to do with it. If she's injured already when we see her, and the finger slaying blade is found with the Nox, and the running theory is the Nox are Numems, it would make sense Marika did it since she has the fate to weild it. Also, The Nox and silver tears might be a prototype form of the Shamans or a recreation imo. But, its all just an unhindged theory

The god that abandoned Placidusax. Is likely the "local" god that he was a consort for. This position might have been filled by many gods acompanied by many lords. But we don't know for certain how far this system stretches back or if it was even controlled by the greater will all the time. For all we know other outer gods might have held the reigns before Merika ascended and took the role of the "local" god. Just because an elder god hasn't been explicitly mentioned, doesn't mean they're not leaving their mark. On the other hand, Miquella's theme seems to be to create an all embracing order by eliminating free will. This doesn't seem to different from what the greater will would be pushing for. It could be Miquella was given eternal youth, not to curse his body, but to manipulate his mind to be eternally child-like. No matter how much of a genius he'd grow to be. I also find it interesting that Miquella's goal (taking away free will through a new order) and Rani's goal (Total freedom from the order) seem to be completely opposite to eachother.

Elden lord means wielding the elden ring from a divinity which has the elden ring. Be it a vessel or the elden beast itself. Metyr is not an elden ring and did not have it since it came to earth before the elden beast. And when killed, says legend felled. Also it drops remembrance and runes, sign it was killed and the lack hole was probably that hole on her tail collapsing (remember aaldia from ds2 is defeated but not killed, since he does not drop any soul). Also placidusax shares more traits with the elden beast than with metyr (elden beast remembers a dragon and shares the same breath as placidusax). The elden beast fled from placidusax before farum azula crumbled, and because marika called it from the gate of divinity (we can see and hear it from the trailer). After that we had the farum azula crysis, involving rhe battle with bayle and the destruction of the city, whoch happened AFYER marika set the vail over the lands of shadow (you dont find any farum azula ruins in this place, while you can find them all across the lands between). Last thing: from the correct japanese translation, there is not a punishment from the greater will to the nox. They banished themselves underground fearing a punishment for their action, which is quite different. The greater will actually only sent two meteors and communicated with the fingers in the early times. After that it never had influences and all we know are tales from the fingers.

This theory has big issues with continuity of the world. Metyr is daughter of Greater Will and it's voice in Lands Between. But, it is nowhere suggested that she was a God herself. Marika was a God, Ranni becomes a God, same as Miquella. Which suggests that the god is mortal of unique spiritual strenght who becomes embodiment of order in the world. Metyr guided those individuals to ascend to godhood. I do not think she ever acted as a God. Moreover, we know that Greater Will abandoned Lands Between. We do not know why and when it happened. The opening of base game suggests that it happened after Shuttering, but it could happen ages ago as Metyr pretended to act on behalf of Greater Will. I think that God of Placidusax simply escaped godhood at one point. As St. Trina said, godhood is prison.

very interesting theory. I ended up coming to a very different conclusion but I don't want you to think i'm trying to refute the theory, just want to share what I speculated. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole of what if the borrowed power of a god the giants used, is the same power Plasidusaax is waiting to return, that Hyetta mentions what was borrowed must be returned? If it came from somewhere close to or in Farum Azula and came down to earth, this could be a sun god becoming a fell god, like it literally fell from higher up, but was also defeated at some great cost. If this is the same power Marika made forbidden, since fire can hurt the Erdtree, it might not be to far of a stretch to assume even a sun god could go mad from imprisonment and isolation. While some of the giants flame got stolen from this isolation, I believe the god itself is still trapped, and a few incantations of fire basically leaked out to be used by humans, who need fire for survival(prometheus). The frenzy flame incantations mention failed attempts at controlling the flame, so that same isolated god was experimented on, but also, frenzied burst mentions a meager victory of controlling it. My speculation of these different item descriptions, is that the mad god used to be the god of the sun realm, that Marika defeated and banished, causing it to go mad. But I never attached a name and this idea was from before SotE came out

I think the fact Radagon becomes a sword sorta shoots this theory in the foot. However I do think that due to this we get a better picture of the greater will. Its like that one absent dad who shows up to one birthday party when your five, says hello then you never see or hear from that creature again. Elden Ring just a Bad Parent Trauma Simulator/Therapy Session.

I doubt the finger slayer blade is made from Mytr but that she was attacked using that blade

Perhaps she filled a similar role as the elden beast, and became the foundation of godhood for the age's god. Maybe in the past, order was not the driving principle, but intelligence, fingers, the ability to develop beyond beasts. Because we know that 5 fingers are the defining characteristic of intelligence, and that the intelligent beasts revere their 5 fingers. Maybe order came later, and the fingers that brought intelligence were the previous focus.

finger slayer blade was "born of a corpse" and Metyr is still alive in the dlc so it couldn't be from her

Before watching, I do NOT think metyr is placidusax’s absent god. I think they are both abandoned by the greater will.

Where exactly is this idea that the Fingerslayer blade is from Metyr's body? That just seems like a big leap to me.

Maybe the Nox tried to slay Metyr because they could see it corrupting Marika or enslaving her in some way

I wonder of Metyr is Marika fingers, also notice throughout this dlc they never once spoke of the finger maidens. They only spoke in base game. Make me wonder if Marika was the first finger maiden?
