The thing with hitting a woman with a stick or a pen is because hitting a woman is not meant to cause pain. It is meant as a final warning. It's supposed to have a rhetorical meaning. It means, "please be aware that I might leave you after this". Also, recall that I told you before that the Quran can never be fully and accurately translated to another language. This is one example. The word "ضرب" does not accurately translate to "hit". Each Arabic word has some depth in its meaning.

The word "Hit" is a choice of words of the translator. "Daraba" means physical contact, And with the sunnah of the prophet we can see the guidelines to what the physical contact means, and its clear that it means contact without harming her that can result in to physical damage, its not allowed to even leave a mark has been used as an example. So youre not even allowed to leave a mark on the woman, But you are allowed to grab her ferm and sit het down as a last resort, and if the woman still is disobedient, then devorce could be a end result.

I think that Black Americans concept of discipline was misguided through slavery which the master used cruel and inhumane extreme methods of punishment so if you are thinking from the mindset of slavery then that hitting with a “pencil” would seem of no use. However, if for example, a child is disciplined verbally and rarely is spanked then you discipline with a pencil that child would pay attention because he never was disciplined like that in the past, you will have the effect you want. With a woman, as far as getting physical i.e. hitting, if you tap her with a pencil (after you have exhausted all other means as directed in the Quran), she will know that you are serious about the situation you both are in and she is obliged to listen to you. Now this doesn’t mean to go to extremes (because Allah doesn’t like extremes) but it does highlight that whatever is the point that the husband is trying to express is serious. Another point is that the wife if she is a practicing Muslim is obligated to maintain peace in the home as well as the husband. Now myself as a Muslim woman (if I were married), unless my husband asked me to do something against the teachings of the Quran, I have a right not to listen or follow him other then that I would listen, take his advice, offer my advice, and ask Allah (SWT) to heal the differences.

The translation is the problem ,in the original Arabic it explains in depth but the translation says hit which isnt the best choice of words, there's 171,476 words in the English language but there's over 12 million words in the Arabic language so the meaning doesn't get exactly amplified when you translate the Arabic into english , the word choice isn't the best

Las traducciones muchas veces utilizan la palabra que mas se les asimila y ocurren estas situaciones que no són del todo así, el Coran se escribio en arabe por ser la lengua con mas riqueza gramatical y unos patrones tan elocuentes que antes del Coran los arabes no utiltizaban algunas de las palabras que hay en el libro sagrado y aun asi tenian logica y eran rapidas de aprender. Tambien aprovecho para decirte sin ningun animo de ataque o de ofensa, que como catolico bien sabras que en la biblia muchas veces se meciona que una mujer no puede enseñar a hombres, que si no llevan velo hay que afeitarles la cabeza, que la mujer es la propiedad de un hombre y que eva fue quien desvio a Adam y por eso los niños nacen pecadores... En el islam el divorcio es derecho de una mujer y de un hombre, en el cristianismo no puedes divorciarte aunque abuse de ti o aunque te maltrate, la unica manera es que el cometa adulterio..

Unlike liberal societies, husband and wife in Islam are not partners with equal rights and duties, the husband is the leader with responsibilities, he's the provider and the protector of his family, but with those responsibilities he's granted a level of authority over his wife and children other wise he would be just a slave to her, and if he has authority without responsibilities he would become a tyrant. A disobedient wife should be advised first and it's better to be gentle but firm in the same time and not allow your wife to cross certain lines and that's the model of a good Muslim husband and the model of the prophet pbuh, but if she's stubborn then the husband should move to the second tactic by not having any sexual activity with her, it's recommended of him to sleep in the same bed with her though because that would make her submit and stop her disobedience, but it's also permissable to sleep in other room but it's forbidden to leave the house altogether. If she keep her stubbornness then he should move to the third tactic which is hitting her not severely, not on the face or only one place or leave a mark on her. All of that is used with normal feminine woman who might to stop being disobedient with just advice or stopping being intimate with her, the hitting is more of a emotional process than a physical thing. But in the last 50 years with the rise of feminism, women become more stubborn and ferocious, so the hitting maybe should reach it's permissable limit, if it's going to cross the line with no results then the husband should not use it in the first place, because hitting her so hard will make her resent him and kill the love she has for him is she has any, if no solution work, then divorce is an option or marrying another wife if he can provide for both of them and satisfy both of them sexually, maybe should would be more willing to listen if she has competitors.

Allahs guidance came upon a people who already had their ways and were doing all sorts of immorality, The guidance of Allah came to reform people and teach better ways, where Arab men before may have just hit the wife when they pleased Allah is saying that there are steps you have to take BEFORE 'hitting' and then even 'hitting' has its limits. The verse isnt saying just hit your women the verse is giving guidelines i.e take these measures then if you need to show that you're actually serious you can do that BUT not hitting your women is best and the best is what Allah constantly encourages us to strive for. Allah knows the psyche of humans and he knows what's realistic therefore the Quran as a whole is pragmatic and takes holistic, balanced and wise approach to matters e.g Allah doesn't just forbid the owning of slaves instead he legislates the guidelines concerning the matter but says ultimately the freeing of slaves is better and if they desire let them buy their freedom because Allah knows humans best.
