A senator in Mexico just ritually sacrificed a chicken to a demon to make it rain. I'm not very shocked by this, as this is what they were doing in Mexico before the Spanish and Christians got there. It is basically impossible to imagine how dark the pagan world was before Christianity came.

As a Mexican, I can tell you that paganism was practically eliminated for centuries (at least in public). Paganism exploded in Mexico in the last three decades. Paganism is not openly practiced. This was not the case for centuries. The thing is, that paganism in Mexico has grown at the same rate in the last three decades, as Americans have been abandoning Christianity. Just like it would unusual to see Americans openly practicing Wicca, Voodoo, Hinduism, or Buddhism. Three decades ago, it was unusual to see Mexicans openly practicing paganism.

The modern Jews simply don't do it today because they don't have the Arc of the Covenant anymore, otherwise they'd be sacrificing lambs every year, and as a Christian I would have no problem with that. But yeah on a separate comment, the whole chicken killing is kind of "good initiative, bad judgement." It's not prescribed specifically in the Bible, thus they probably shouldn't do it, especially since it could be considered a "strange sacrifice" and God tends to not like that, but plenty of Old Testimate Patriarchs also had "extra sacrifices" so there's a lot there to unpack.

Animal sacrifices back in the Old Testament involved Goats and Cattle, not chickens. Meant for temporary atonement of sins and memorance of God. They were also used in anticipation for the Messiah. They compare nothing to the One Eternal Sacrifice of our Lord who atones for all, now and forever.

Those conquered peoples identified cognates between the two faiths, Yoruba Ifá and Catholicism, personalities and entities who were responsible for the same functions in the pantheon. Orishas do the same thing as saints in the Catholic pantheon -- and yes, it is a pantheon, a pantheon of saints. Catholics *made this happen* They forcibly converted native and diaspora peoples, made them practice Christianity at the point of a blunderbuss, the tip of a spear, the edge of a sword, and those peoples all said 'Okay, as long as you stop massacring us,' (I paraphrase of course). The point here is, again, there could never have been any Santería, Vodoun/Voodoo, Candomblé without specifically-Catholic imperialism. They did what your people commanded: they used the names of Christian saints, incorporating the Catholic pantheon into their worship. If you don't like it, blame your own people because this Mexican senator could not have made this ceremony with the Catholics.

Prior to the Messiah, yes. They were incomplete temporary sacrifices that had limited atonement. However, all those sacrifices were in anticipation of the One Eternal Sacrifice of the Lord. Such things, no longer necessary, nor are they even sufficient. Works of the Old Law will do nothing.
