The street markets in Mexico are not novelty/play stores. They are where people actually shop on a daily basis. There are Costco, Walmarts and other stores that are fully stocked. But, people like their open markets too.

glad you enjoyed CDMX! Even as a "local" you discover new things every day. Just yesterday, a Japanese friend introduced us to a great little Japanese bakery on a side street in Condesa. Oh, and regarding Koreans - there are many. Where I live it is chock-full of expat exectuive families, but there is also a little Korea in the Zona Rosa with Korean restaurants and shops. Aeromexico will even relaunch its nonstop flights from CDMX to Seoul again in August. This is just such an incredible city for its rich local history but also for its incredibly cosmopolitan vibe - and yet what other mega cities have so many lovely green spaces in the city center that make it feel calm and relaxed?! Love it! come back again and explore more!

Businesses buy their produce at a HUGE wholesale market called Centro de Abastos, (Wholesale Mkt) which is a must see market on its own. It’s a city on its own. It’s said to be the largest market in the world. The Centro de Abastos is open to the public, but is mostly for businesses ,and is massive center and wonderful to see. Very very busy. Fruits, meats and veggies and many many other products pass thru there to be resold in the street and other markets. The street markets are used by people on a daily basis. I’m sure that some restaurants purchase from street vendors also in a pinch. In Mexico City there are over 300 open air street markets daily. Some are stationary, others move from location to location on a daily basis.

In the video you mention that you don’t think the fruit was homegrown. The street markets are not like Saturday Markets in the US, where people say that they grew the stuff themselves, and only sell on the weekends, some as a hobby. The street markets in Mexico are Everyday, where you get fruits and veggies brought in fresh from around the country. They buy fresh from a wholesaler at a very good price, and sold at a very good price. Some people I suppose do grow some things themselves, but they need to focus on selling. These folks hussle, hussle, hussle to make a living selling fruits n veggies. Hope you enjoyed your time in Mexico City. It’s a beautiful city.
@FruitandSup9 ай бұрын
Interesting - so most of what is sold is not grown themselves but sourced wholesale. That makes sense for a country like MX :) thank you for sharing!
@nz12689 ай бұрын
@@FruitandSup there might be those that grow some on their own, but the purpose of street markets in Mexico is not for the person to say they grew their own, but to actually provide fresh fruits and veggies at a good price. But, there is a huge wholesale pipeline in Mexico that provides produce, as well as organic produce. The wholesalers receive a constant flow of produce daily, 24 hrs a day. Even tho the wholesale market is open to the public, it would not be convenient for the regular person to trudge out there for everything. So that’s where the small independent business person comes in and brings it to the neighborhood general public. People love those street markets. There are near 300 such markets in Mexico City alone.
