Just telling you my experience's in Mexico. I drove though it many times as a young woman by myself. I never had a bad experience. The men there were very helpful. When I had car trouble and a car accident. I have had many trips to Mexico, everyone was very good to me. I experienced they are very good to women that travel alone. On the other hand, not so good as a couple. I just thought it was obvious that they pick on foreign men. That was my impression. If you as a woman are with a man , you have more to worry about. Or if foreign men go to Mexico without women, they seem to get in trouble. I have to say as a woman in America, I have had everything bad that can happen to you here in the USA, (excluding murder) and that was just purely luck. And it doesn't matter what neighborhood you are in. Just saying, Mexican's have always been good to me in their country. I think because I was a woman alone. Unless times has changed? All I remember is they appeared to be very protective of me.

Being originally from Mexico city, yes - you have to be alert at all times - even when knowing self-defense. Sometimes you see "them" coming and can't fight them or resist, but you can throw your wallet on the floor and step on it or something valuable you have with you, I've done that before while on public transportation - it worked. I practiced Krav-Maga for 3 years and that is correct - if you see danger coming, you run away as fast as you can, you do not confront. Your skills are only to be used when you're already on a life-threatening situation where you need to explode into your abilities to get out of there. Never stay longer than you need, even if you've submitted someone, you never know how many of them are backing up that person.

I can totally relate to your best safety tips. Solo travelers (regardless of gender) are always more vulnerable to scammers. I've found myself in some not-so-pleasant situations (but had the street smarts to pull myself out of most of them) in places like Turkey, Morocco, and to a lesser extent, Mexico. And every time, I kicked myself for not having listened to my instincts and having let my guard down. On the issue of clothing: I found myself getting the wrong kind of attention having taken the wrong turn in some not well-to-do hoods in CDMX, Puebla and Buenos Aires (many times one block is all it takes to move from a safe hood to an unsafe one). Not that I was flashy at all according to my standards (dark denim jeans, a nice t-shirt, some decent-looking shoes, a bead bracelet): even then, I realized that I was too well dressed for the setting.

There's this weird phenomenen where everyone in México wears pants and often times long sleeves or sweaters, even when it's breaking 65F. While I think this is similar to what I've seen in KZbin videos from Miami, it seems to have a very practical purpose and that is to protect you from very high UV radiation. While there are some US cities that are at lower latitudes than México, México's land is usually at a rather high altitude. The higher the altitude you go, the higher the radiation dose you recieve. Therefore, the coupling of high altitude and low latitudes result in high UV radiation.

Another excellent video, as usual. My take away from having spent time in Tijuana is if you really want to find trouble, you can. If you want to avoid it, you can generally do that too. Finding trouble tends to begin with the drug trade, buying or selling. Never had an issue there. It did help I was with a local, who spoke Spanish. P.S. I think Laska's probably at home playing dress up with your "gold chains" while partying with the local squirrels. ;)

Not quite half way through the video, but I think just looking confident, and like you said, learning Spanish are the best things you can do. If you seem like you know what you're doing and you obviously can understand and communicate, you are less of a target. Thank you for all the helpful resources you provided through your videos and travel. Our first city we tried was where you two ended up :) we also tried Merida, Puerto Morales and Mexico City (right beside the park). My husbands favourite was the city. Mexico never worked out for what our needs were and hopefully SOON you two will have similar needs...wealth building and proper tax structuring in order to properly build. Through real estate, stocks, etc...whatever and however you chose to invest your wealth. Mexico was not an easy place to establish and do this...whereas Portugal is. Plus right now Portugal is trying to attract all the digital nomads to come and live there with easy visas and excellent tax incentives for 10 years. As long as you bring your own job and you can support yourself online. Safety is a given and everything we were looking for in Mexico, we found in Portugal. I'm Canadian and my husband is European, so we had to choose a country that worked for both of us. Anyhow thank you and if you ever feel like going to explore Europe for a while you might want to consider looking into Portugal.

You could mention how to protect yourself when using an ATM machine…even in a bank. Two things I do is cover the key pad to hide my PIN # when entering my number….to stop cloning of my card, and the second thing is if possible to have a second person watching out while I am using the machine. In some cities in Mexico, the ATM’s are located on a wall right on the street. A second person on watch will increase your security tenfold.

Most of these seem like common-sense things applicable to almost every country. Interesting that Krav Maga advises a kick to the nuts. I studied Okanawan Kempo, and they advised attacking the knees. The crotch is rather high, and male reflexes to protect that area are very strong. It only takes about 15 lbs of pressure to shatter a knee, anyone with reasonablly strong legs can exert more that area; just angle your kick to bend the knee in a direction it isn't supposed to go. Nobody is going to chase you very far or very fast with a broken knee. A good stout walking stick or umbrella is also useful, and it is the one weapon that is absolutely legal to take anywhere.

The point is to be informed, not scared. US media has socialized and brainwashed us to be afraid of so much of the world. Don’t believe the hype. Use their advice, work and ENJOY your time there. Mexico is wonderful.

More tips for staying safe from banditos, in Queretaro (or traveling, in general). Keep just a little bit of cash handy in your front pocket (say, $20 US), while walking the streets, and stash the bulk of your money in your money belt or even in your shoe. (I always carried my backpack when out and about, but I NEVER carried my money in it, because I figured it was too easy to set your backpack down and forget it, or otherwise get separated from it.) When you go to purchase your street tacos, or cervezas, or whatever, pull out only your little bit of cash, so you're not pulling out a big wad of cash for all the world to see. And, if you do need to access your big wad of cash while out and about, do it in the privacy of a bathroom stall, etc. Another tip, look unwealthy and wear non-flashy clothing. (Or, as I like to call it, "wear your best urban camouflage.") The less you stand out, the better. I walked the 2 miles home from the bars in El Centro, alone late at night, many a time. Just always stay vigilant about being aware of your surroundings, and determine your safest path, blocks ahead. Also, when drinking alcohol, avoid getting drunk, to help you not be an easy target. Queretaro is a fantastic city, but any big city can be dangerous, especially if you look like an easy target. I really enjoyed my time there. So many stories to tell.

Really important to be confident while walking, if u see strange things, even walk with a serious face so everyone knows u know how the business is like and they won't bother u. Also if needed ask for help, most people are good people and they'll help, however follow ur instincts :)

Ahh! Situational awareness is important everywhere; in the woods, on the highway, in the city. You are learning. Experience is a wonderful teacher but I think it's better to use the unfortunate experience of others rather than your own. Fewer stories but way, way easier. Addendum: Baltimore, Chicago, New Orleans, LA, and NYC beat anywhere you've been in MX. If you don't do illegal stuff, you'll meet a lot fewer baddies. I worked in a prison for several years. I learned a lot about how baddies think.

Queretaro is one of the richest and safest cities in Mexico, you should also visit Merida, Aguascalientes or Leon. Aguascalientes and Leon are not as pretty as Qro but they are peaceful and you could have quality of life. I insist, don't go to Celaya :P or beyond Galerias Queretaro :P you should visit the venezuelan community, it's pretty large and we want to know more about it. Take care!! ps I used to live close to Qro and now I'm moving to AZ, and you left AZ for Qro.. xd

I'm from a town near Celaya, and I stay the hell away from that God-forsaken city. Celaya used to be a nice place, but the last 40 years or so have seen it really fall into disrepair due to bad politics and mismanagement. Hopefully that changes because the city has a lot of history and potential to become a great place, but only time will tell.

Be careful with that backpack. There are pros who will cut an opening in that and you will never notice. The advantage a purse offers is you can keep an eye on it better. For Mexico, I think the greater threat is an opportunistic snatch and run, so the backpack approach is probably overall more sensible. But, be aware that the knife thing does happen.

Not all the time! If you are being robbed and the offenders tell you to lie down, face down on the ground, attempt to bind your hands or cover your eyes, or especially try to put you in a vehicle to take you somewhere else, that's the time to fight back! Nothing good is going to happen to you if you are taken to another location. Usually complying is sufficient , but not necessarily all of the time in every situation.
@facundopop
@facundopop 3 жыл бұрын
@@AZUSC-hm4hl those situations are super rare maybe only happen to a woman that is alone and a crazy guy wants to rape her. What I mean by the other comment if the ask you to “dame tu cartera” you have to give your wallet, “dame tu celular” you have to give your cellphone.
@AZUSC-hm4hl
@AZUSC-hm4hl 3 жыл бұрын
@@facundopop Yes. You are absolutely correct. If it is just a quick street robbery, compliance is al most always the best solution, however if something escalates, compliance may not be the best idea. Take a look please at Advances Self Protection videos on KZbin. You will see what I am referring to.

20:35 Yeah, that's a Foreign Conversation Fee ( Different from the credit 💳 foreign transaction fee. ) where your payment is converted in dollars not the local currency. Always chose to pay in local currency however sometimes even if you press the local currency option you still get charged ( Happened to me in Rio De Janeiro ). AMEX 💳 don't charge the FCF however unlike Brazil AMEX doesn't seem to be widely accepted in Mexico, at least from my experiences in Cancun Mexico. Get a foreign currency converter app and check your receipts and your credit card statements especially on the weekends when the forex is closed.
