In a recent video I talked about our cost of living in Queretaro in 2024 and we got a lot of comments saying that it was getting really expensive here. So I did some research to compare current prices in Queretaro to current prices in a major US city, all so we could get an idea of how much savings one could experience living in Mexico vs living in the USA in 2024.

Good work Jordan - we split the year : CDMX and Tucson - using H2O very moderately- our monthly water bill is $80. There are loads of “ line items” beyond water which are billed. Moreover, life for young people in the USA is far tougher than in my youth.

Thanks for that $1200. He's really young to be living the yuppie lifestyle. Got to keep the little woman happy I guess. Street food is so good there and it is really cheap. Eat at the longest line ups You can see what your getting. Just point and smile. Every town and in major cities have an area with a barbecue chicken to go place Catch the tamale lady in the morning. Every town has a inexpensive place where the locals eat. I don't like eating out. How much for a sitting room with a kitchen all inclusive?

There is one important difference in health insurance: In the US, insurance is currently required to cover pre-existing conditions. In Mexico, insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. That is a big difference.

Hi Jordan, I have a niece who just went with her boyfriend to Guadalajara, Mexico last week. Her boyfriend has family living there. Now they are in Puerto Vallarta. I told her to send me homes that are for sale there in GDL. I live in Los Angeles and the houses here are way too expensive for a younger couple. I bought my house band new, 30 years ago at 27 years old for $179,000 for a 4bed & 3bth and 2 story. Now the houses are going for 1.2 million but how can a young couple afford that. The older houses are around $800,00 and some are not up to date on design. That is crazy. I have been to Guadalajara, and it is so Beautiful. I have a co-worker who retired there and visit him recently. I cannot believe how modern it is now. The last time I visited there was back in 1980. I even thought it was beautiful back then. Thanks for the info. Jordan!

Whether medical is more expensive in the U.S. depends on your situation. I am retired on medicare and pay about $150 per month. I can't even get medical insurance in Mexico no matter how much I sm willing to pay. I have to pay al la carte so Mexico costs me a lot more. Most other things in Mexico are higher cost like tools, electronics, appliances etc. Wine is higher in Mexico as is beef etc. Hotels are cheaper in Mexico. Cars cost more in Mexico but housing is cheaper et ., etc.

@zackjones5764

100% agreed. The healthcare insurance matches a mortgage payment. Its absolutely ridiculous. Even for young healthy people the cost is far too high than the value you get from the insurance. Its like the only way to go is just not to get insurance and die when you die.

See if you can find a Direct Primary Care practice near you. It's really the model of the future, it's a membership, non-insurance care where your membership includes multiple doc visits, a house call, labs & meds at wholesale, stitches for lacerations, setting broken bones, etc. Then you get a cheap major medical policy for biggies like heart attacks, cancer, etc. Maybe it's like $120/month for an adult. Less for kids.

And here in Cambodia, it’s about 70% less than your costs in Queretero, Mexico. I’m single though with no pricey dogs to care for. English is understood-no Spanish to learn. The US dollar is used. No conversion fees. $3 for a haircut. 50 cents for a mug of beer. $2 for a Gin & Tonic. $2 for a chicken sandwich with fries! I’m never going back to the US. 😎

As I live in Canada, I never have to think much about the medical costs and my work provides group benefits. That said, the cost of living - especially rent and food - is getting out of control! I have spent a little time in Guadalajara and the surrounding area. I thought it would be great to move to Mexico now that we're retired, so, I've been trying to convince my wife that it would be a great move for us. Sadly though, from the looks of some the recent "Actual cost to live in Mexico" videos we've seen, it looks like the prospect of moving is dwindling. If we could have moved 2 - 5 years ago we'd be sitting pretty. Now, however, it's looking like the cost of living there isn't so much better than here in the States. I had budgeted between $1000 to $1200 per month for housing. I'm not sure that would be enough now.

We live in Mexico and self-pay for medical, very affordable compared to the US even with insurance. I recently went for a visit over the holidays and had an unexpected medical issue that required a CT scan and 5 hours in the ER. The cost for that visit and scan was 20,000 dollars, as I visited my prior network and paid cash within 60 days of the visit, I received a discount and had to pay 8000 dollars to the hospital and 1500 dollars to the doctor in the ER. I had a kidney stone. I was told that had this happened here it would have been between 100 and 200 dollars for the same care. UGH, won't be visiting the US anytime soon, until I am on Medicare in 3 years.

I can't speak for Queretaro, but I know in Monterrey and Mexico city there are markets where you can buy cloths cheaper than in the US. The only down side is you might not find your sizes in these places and I've heard sometimes the colors fade on these off brands quicker than "bargain basement" US cloths

@@hoppeanofasgard1365 you can take your cheap shoes to a cobbler and they'll stitch the soles on. i have done so with a number of shoes i really like. one pair i have had over 10 years actually and i bought those at a thrift shop in the usa, they just happen to be really good water proof shoes with metal toe guards / sturdy work type shoes, not boots. shine up really nice too. cost me like $7 usd to get the pair stitched in puerto vallarta and they hand stitched them, not through a machine, in pitillal - the town connected up to puerto vallarta where all the workers live and where costco is. if you start living like mexicans live you can save a lot and make your clothing and appliance last. it's very difficult to get foreigners to change that attitude. most never change, which is fine if they got money. mexicans are thankful for the things americans and canadian expats throw away because they're worn out or don't work as well and they don't want to bother to get them repaired or repair them / maintain them themselves.

Yes, I also spent a-lot of years in SE Asia, its noisy. If you like golf, the courses are very nice and affordable. My rent there was the best in Leon out of other places in Mexico. Great video. For health insurance in the USA, if your employer offers group insurance that will be much cheaper than 1,500 usd a month... but still not as cheap as $200 usd a month for 2 people (could be $300-400 if it's a good plan). For the dental, the cleanings are free with insurance in the usa, and cavities are also highly subsidized. I paid almost nothing for those after my $50 deductible and I had $2000 usd each year from the insurance to cover dental work. I agree that once you get to implants or serious dental work, it will get more expensive in usa. The more expensive stuff in MX - I'm afraid for when my Mac Air will need to be replaced... I'll have to go to usa and buy a new one since it's double the price here... kitchen appliances are much more expensive here, and several other things. But yes, offset by rent for now - hopefully the conversion rates don't level that advantage out!

There are some states like California that are cheaper with great coverage. One can get Covered California for as lower as $20 a month, no deductibles, no co-pay. It all depends (employed, unemployed, salary, location, etc). Great plans out there, you just have to do your research and find it. As a business owner and homeowner, I have a $30 month insurance cost (no deductibles, no co-pay, no cost for prescriptions, no cost emergency, unlimited). It only took me 16 years to find it, but I found it. USA has better healthcare systems (state-of-the-art) great healthcare benefits, coverages, cost, etc. USA has better trained doctors, surgeons, etc. USA has top of the line prescription drugs. USA is still better. USA, USA, USA!

Thanks for clarifying that. I keep wondering how I could possibly have a job to support all that there? There much for jobs around there for the average person? My wife's from Mexico but from a small village type town and been a couple decades since she left. I'm basically English speaking only & have always struggled to remember stuff to learn a another language. I know some words but can't put sentences together in Spanish. Like in school I did better than average at every other subject except Spanish and history. Those I did below average and couldn't even pass Spanish. Just not good at memorizing words, definitions, names, etc but I'm great at complex thinking. Feel like there's nothing I could do there but my wife wants me to go. What you think? Can I survive very well? What type of options are there for someone like me that truly just struggles with learning Spanish even when exposed a lot? My in-laws speak only Spanish so that's how I barely learned some words but it's still a struggle to remember those sadly. I wouldn't count on high exposure teaching me a lot. I'm pretty uniquely horrible at that even if I want to. I've tried apps to learn and all kinda of stuff doing them daily for a while. So, if I can't learn it somehow is there still a chance for me to live there & make a living? Any help would be awesome! Is there smaller areas that are cheaper I could survive in?

The health insurance cost comparison is inaccurate for most people. If you're under 65 in the U.S. and making a modest living you're probably going to be on a subsidized Obamacare/ACA plan paying. For a couple earning 50-75K your premiums would be less than $200 a month. If you're 65 or older like most people considering retirement in Mexico you're going to be on Medicare. I pay around $180 a month total for Medicare plus a high-deductible Part G supplement. Private insurance in Mexico for me would cost far more and is completely unaffordable after age 70. You have to have the assets to self-insure at that point - meaning 250-200K per person. And if you have that much money you can afford to live many other places. We moved from Mexico back to the USA in 2017 precisely because Tucson is cheaper than anyplace we lived in Mexico with far better infrastructure. Between the residency visa income requirements now and the peso at 17 to the dollar the days of living cheaply and well thete are long gone.
