In a recent video I talked about our cost of living in Queretaro in 2024 and we got a lot of comments saying that it was getting really expensive here. So I did some research to compare current prices in Queretaro to current prices in a major US city, all so we could get an idea of how much savings one could experience living in Mexico vs living in the USA in 2024.

See if you can find a Direct Primary Care practice near you. It's really the model of the future, it's a membership, non-insurance care where your membership includes multiple doc visits, a house call, labs & meds at wholesale, stitches for lacerations, setting broken bones, etc. Then you get a cheap major medical policy for biggies like heart attacks, cancer, etc. Maybe it's like $120/month for an adult. Less for kids.

Quite an informative video, Jordan! As someone who is looking at Mexico as a possible retirement destination when the time comes, it's good to see where my money can potentially go further. As I live in Canada, I never have to think much about the medical costs and my work provides group benefits. That said, the cost of living - especially rent and food - is getting out of control! Trouble is where I ultimately want to live if I choose Mexico - Merida? Mazatlan? Puebla? Anyway, keep up the good work!

I had a heart attack in October and almost died and I got excellent care in the public health system here in Portugal. My wife called the emergency number and a nurse talked to me. She said the ambulance would be arriving in fifteen minutes and she was right. They transported me to the nearest cardiac-prepared hospital, an hour away, and I went in directly for an angioplasty to unblock the artery. A doctor and a nurse were in the ambulance with me. I stayed three days in the ICU and 10 more in the cardiac ward getting one more stent put in. I went in later for another stent in December. What was the cost? ZERO. I didn't even have my ID with me. The care was excellent. All the nurses and assistant nurses were polite and caring. I imagine the public health care system in Mexico is not of the same quality. We do pay high taxes here but we get things for our money, and health care is the most important.

The video compares the cost of living in Queretaro, Mexico with Phoenix, Arizona, focusing on a range of expenses. Health care costs are significantly lower in Mexico; for instance, health insurance for the presenter and his wife costs $189 per month in Queretaro, compared to $1,590 in Phoenix. Dental care and specialist visits are also much cheaper in Queretaro. The cost of an ambulance ride with advanced life support is about $1,200 less in Queretaro than in Phoenix. Regarding vehicle expenses, while gas is slightly more expensive in Queretaro, car insurance and car wash services are cheaper. The presenter notes that vehicle maintenance is more affordable in Mexico due to lower labor costs. For home expenses, internet costs are comparable between both cities, but electricity and propane are cheaper in Queretaro. Water bills are similar, but other household goods are generally priced the same in both countries. Drinking water delivery and pet care are cheaper in Mexico, with significant savings on vet bills. Cell phone plans, clothing, and services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Costco memberships are less expensive in Queretaro. Entertainment costs like movie tickets and dining out are also cheaper. The cost of renting a similar home in Queretaro is about half of what it is in Phoenix. Groceries are generally cheaper in Mexico, especially if shopping at local markets. In summary, despite the rising costs in Queretaro, the presenter concludes that living in Mexico allows for a higher quality of life on the same budget compared to the US. After hearing about the cost of living differences, you might start to wonder if Phoenix is secretly a luxury resort disguised as a city, where even the ambulance rides feel like an exclusive VIP service with their premium pricing. And let's not forget the special "spa treatment" for cars in Phoenix - who knew that a simple car wash could be a luxury experience? Meanwhile, in Queretaro, it seems you can live like royalty on a jester's budget!

@@hoppeanofasgard1365 you can take your cheap shoes to a cobbler and they'll stitch the soles on. i have done so with a number of shoes i really like. one pair i have had over 10 years actually and i bought those at a thrift shop in the usa, they just happen to be really good water proof shoes with metal toe guards / sturdy work type shoes, not boots. shine up really nice too. cost me like $7 usd to get the pair stitched in puerto vallarta and they hand stitched them, not through a machine, in pitillal - the town connected up to puerto vallarta where all the workers live and where costco is. if you start living like mexicans live you can save a lot and make your clothing and appliance last. it's very difficult to get foreigners to change that attitude. most never change, which is fine if they got money. mexicans are thankful for the things americans and canadian expats throw away because they're worn out or don't work as well and they don't want to bother to get them repaired or repair them / maintain them themselves.

Let's say you try to find some equivalent salary you'd have to earn in México to have an equal lifestyle in the US, and you take 45k as the average US income, and if on average, things cost 3x more in the US, then divide the 45k into 3 and then convert to the MXN(I'm using 20 to 1 even though it's 17 right now), then you'd get 25k pesos/month. Then, consider how much money you'd need per year to barely scrap by in the US(I use 18k USD, but understandable if maybe someone could exist with less), and you take the ratio between the barely scraping by and the average US income, you'd get 0.4. Take that ratio and multiply the 25k pesos a month and you'd get 10k pesos a month. But the reality seen here is that the threshold income for existing in México is much more lenient and or lower than that in the US, because 10k pesos a month is still higher than the average monthly income of the some 59 million Mexican labor force. In fact, depending on where you are in México, you could absolutely get by with 6k pesos per month(with many sacrifices). Many people still make it through life even with a miserable 4k pesos a month and some people, called ''pepenadores'', for example, make even less than that per month. Granted, those people often live in unspeakable conditions. I guess what I think is interesting here is that people in México and I also believe Latin America in general, find ways to get by spending far less money proportionately than the US counterpart. That and possibly the absolute bare minimum requirements to exist in the US may play a part as well(Where are you going to find an apartment or even a room for less than 500 USD per month, for example? But, in México, I can still find holes in the wall on facebook marketplace that charge like 1000 pesos a month(50usd). Even if you could find a room for $400 a month in the US, that's still like 8x more, despite the fact that average house costs are nowhere near that large of a difference. For example, take some gated community with security in Pachuca de Soto and you might find a house that costs 2.5M pesos for around 1200-1500ft^2.That's 125k USD. In the US, maybe that's under 200k or maybe 300k+, but that's only around 2x as expensive.
@ajz295
@ajz295 8 ай бұрын
The median price for a house in the USA is around 390,000 dollars. And that's the median, not something upper-middle like your example of Pachuca, plus if you work on the formal sector you have Infonavit, and while it's not the best, it gives you the opportunity to have a credit yes or yes and to use the money you have saved through the years to help you buy the house. I'm not saying you're wrong, almost everything you said is right, but when it comes to housing, surprisingly, I think the average mexican has a higher chance to get a house than the average US citizen

I lived in downtown TO for almost 33 years and relocated to Mexico City three months ago as a temporary resident.. I have been retired since June 2023 from my public service job. Since 2016, I have spent an average of 4-5 weeks/year (except for one year during the pandemic) in Mexico exploring different cities as options for retirement. I was pretty shocked by the increase of COL since 2023 (I'd say 20%), due to inflation and a less advantageous MEX/CAD exchange (14+ MEX to 1 CAD in 2022, 12.3+ MEX to 1 CAD in 2023). If you shop at supermarkets such as Soriana, La Comer, and Walmart, you will find that the food price is not that much different than in Canada overall. As Jordan mentioned, buying your food in a local market or small shop is much cheaper. However, things like public transit will cost you 40-60 cents compared to 3.50 in Toronto. Internet and mobile services are a fraction of what we pay in Canada. And rent-wise, 1,500 CAD will get you a very decent and spacious apartment in a good neighborhood provided that it's not in Roma and La Condesa which have become expat bubbles. While Mexico is no longer the deal that it was a few years ago and many other countries offer a cheaper cost of living, it is still advantageous for a US or Canadian expat.

I retired last year in Sept. after a 32 year career. I was paying $120 a month for health insurance (just for me, I have no wife)when I was a active Full-time employee. As soon as I retired, the health insurance went up to $660 a month because I was no longer considered a active employee. I was still able to keep the health insurance and one of my retired benefits from the company pays me $250 a month towards this health insurance, so I pay with this benefit a little over $400 a month. I have a good pension because I completed 32 years . If it were not for this, I would not have been able to retire and afford health insurance. Many of my ex-coworkers can't afford to retire because they are married and have their spouse and would not be able to pay the health insurance for both in retirement, which would be $1600 a month out of thier pension check! They are going to have to wait for Medicare and Social security at age 65. This is how expensive healthcare is in the USA. @@davidsebastianelli1326

@@TangerineTravelsthat makes more sense. You were breaking down the Amazon prime into monthly then didn't specify for the Costco so I was starting to wonder if it's really that high a month there or if that was yearly for there too because here yearly was about the $60 I thought unless you get the better $120.00 membership. Thanks for clarifying that. I keep wondering how I could possibly have a job to support all that there? There much for jobs around there for the average person? My wife's from Mexico but from a small village type town and been a couple decades since she left. I'm basically English speaking only & have always struggled to remember stuff to learn a another language. I know some words but can't put sentences together in Spanish. Like in school I did better than average at every other subject except Spanish and history. Those I did below average and couldn't even pass Spanish. Just not good at memorizing words, definitions, names, etc but I'm great at complex thinking. Feel like there's nothing I could do there but my wife wants me to go. What you think? Can I survive very well? What type of options are there for someone like me that truly just struggles with learning Spanish even when exposed a lot? My in-laws speak only Spanish so that's how I barely learned some words but it's still a struggle to remember those sadly. I wouldn't count on high exposure teaching me a lot. I'm pretty uniquely horrible at that even if I want to. I've tried apps to learn and all kinda of stuff doing them daily for a while. So, if I can't learn it somehow is there still a chance for me to live there & make a living? Any help would be awesome! Is there smaller areas that are cheaper I could survive in?

@@TangerineTravels something else I've been wondering as well. If you live outside of a city limits in Mexico are there delivery services from any of those companies like Sam's club, amazon, or anything like that or is that only in the big major cities there? I've heard different stories about that and wasn't sure. I've heard they don't have a mailing system kind of like USPS here so I wasn't sure how all that works? I know my in-laws mailed a letter from Mexico to here once and it was like $50 U.S. and took well over a month I believe.

I told her to send me homes that are for sale there in GDL. I live in Los Angeles and the houses here are way too expensive for a younger couple. I bought my house band new, 30 years ago at 27 years old for $179,000 for a 4bed & 3bth and 2 story. Now the houses are going for 1.2 million but how can a young couple afford that. The older houses are around $800,00 and some are not up to date on design. That is crazy. I have been to Guadalajara, and it is so Beautiful. I have a co-worker who retired there and visit him recently. I cannot believe how modern it is now. The last time I visited there was back in 1980. I even thought it was beautiful back then. The health insurance cost comparison is inaccurate for most people. If you're under 65 in the U.S. and making a modest living you're probably going to be on a subsidized Obamacare/ACA plan paying. For a couple earning 50-75K your premiums would be less than $200 a month. If you're 65 or older like most people considering retirement in Mexico you're going to be on Medicare. I pay around $180 a month total for Medicare plus a high-deductible Part G supplement. Private insurance in Mexico for me would cost far more and is completely unaffordable after age 70. You have to have the assets to self-insure at that point - meaning 250-200K per person. And if you have that much money you can afford to live many other places. We moved from Mexico back to the USA in 2017 precisely because Tucson is cheaper than anyplace we lived in Mexico with far better infrastructure. Between the residency visa income requirements now and the peso at 17 to the dollar the days of living cheaply and well thete are long gone.
