My hometown is Monterrey, México and the St. patricks batallion fought here. We have a street named after them and a pretty big catholic school named “El Irlandes” meaning “the Irish” in honor of them. Not to mention, my grandmother from my mother’s side was a redhead so we must have some irish blood.

My mother worked for the U.S. government and my father a Washington Metropolitan Police Officer. I too have always heard of the San Patricio Brigade. I have always been proud of my heritage. There is a movie, I didn't like it. They didn't get into the emotional side and a lot of the heart of it. Many Irish soldiers stole the hearts of some of the most beautiful senoritas in that border town. They married had children. Religion had a lot to do with it, as the Irish soldiers would spend week ends in the Mexican border town, bc it was the only close catholic parish. Some would just cross border and go home to their families after their shifts. When the war started, they did not want to shoot at their children's loving grandparents, uncles, aunts. They did what any noble man would do, protected their family and church. VIVA LOS SAN PATRICIOS! VIVA IRLANDA! VIVA MÉXICO!

I remember reading about this war when I was in 8th grade in 1997. They still weren't teaching us our Mexican history in classrooms. I was the one in my classroom that was the knucklehead, and decided to not read the U.S. history book. Instead I had found 2 books by Carlos M. Jimenez titled "The Mexican American Heritage" & another called "Chicano!" By F. Arturo Rosales. Those books taught me so much of my people and to find who I was. It gave me pride to be a Mexican an indigenous to Aztlan. We never crossed the border, the border crossed us. All in all to my Irish homies, thank you for standing next to us mexicanos. My love and respect.
