Getting both the White House (via a landslide EC victory and the popular vote) plus both houses of Congress, is a mandate. However, I think both sides are reading the mandate wrong. I think the real message the voters sent to D.C. was that we're a center-right nation with some isolationist and protectionist tendencies. The Left went so far Left that their own constituents corrected course and swung back to the right of center. The entire nation shifted right by about 12 points, in part, because of how far Left one side has shifted. This is to be expected and happens all the time. If the Republicans over-correct and shift too far Right than the pendulum will swing back Left. Politics aims to land in the center.
