The Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the most stunning archaeological sites in the Americas, including the extraordinary Chichen Itza and Uxmal. The Maya, an indigenous people of Central America, founded a brilliant civilization that experienced a period of rapid growth between the 7th and 9th centuries AD before fading into obscurity. The Maya civilization spanned the Mexican states of Chiapas and Yucatan, as well as Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Chichen Itza, voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, serves as a reminder of the greatness of this nearly forgotten civilization. The site features the grand pyramid known as the "Castillo" by Spanish conquistadors. From its summit, one can see the other structures of the ancient city, including temples, a ball court, a dovecote, and the surrounding forest. Uxmal, another ancient Maya city from the classical period, is distinctive for its Puuc style, characterized by austere lower facades and intricately adorned upper levels. Its pyramid and buildings exude a unique charm.
The Yucatan Peninsula is also home to colonial cities like Merida, Valladolid, and Izamal, where the Spanish influence is still evident in their architecture. At the heart of each city is a square known as the Zocalo, surrounded by symbols of power: the governor's palace, the town hall, and the cathedral, with streets lined by pastel-colored houses that are characteristic of the Yucatan.
