I'm first generation born of *legal* immigrants (father [an infant] & grandparents) fleeing fascism in 1923... applying legally to come to America, and actually contributing to America once we were accepted. Grandfather was an architect/artist and so much of his work still exists from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. My father enlisted in the Army two days after Pearl Harbor (WW2) and was later a commissioned officer. My mother's people came from Germany in 1852, developed land and also served in the US Armed Forces. I proudly served. We contributed to America. This is NOT to say that Hispanic immigrants haven't or won't... but those are in the minority. My people had to prove that they had a trade and the finances to support themselves and not be a public burden, nuisance, or danger. This new wave is largely unable to do that. And we had to show that we had an actual PLACE to go... they can't/don't. There's no room. My fiancé is from the Philippines. She's a beautiful, intelligent, articulate lady who writes and speaks English better than many Americans. She's not just after a "green card". We will do everything LEGAL to formalize her Visa etc... and it's not free. I realize that these Central and South America countries are impoverished and oft run by corrupt governments. That's a job for the UNITED NATIONS... NOT just the United States.
