I just can't comprehend how these things are designed and planned, where each line goes, each pipe, all the wires, planning where each room in the ship is, order of building and so on... amount of planning is just unfathomable

It's like building a skyscraper but rotated 90 degrees on it's side. CAD is an amazing thing. Navisworks lets you fly though it virtually to find collisions and problems before anything is welded, well, or at least figure out a fix.

*Everything about it is huge.* The population of that ship is like a mid-sized village :-) Good to see that the German ship builders are still competitive on the international market. There seems to be a lot of automation and robot-assist, this is probably why this ship builder is still in operation.

Wer's mag.

I believe it has something to do with some level of government support. Meyer is a critical employer in the Lower Saxony region, and received government payouts during COVID. What amazes me is unlike Fincantieri, they aren't state-supported per se, but are still family owned (since 1795!) and in 2014-15 actually bought a second shipyard for more and larger ships

Its a big steel barn, with a big crane inside it, built over a big dry dock, nothing that we don't have in the States (not even insulated, or any solar on the roof). They probably have 3 more rows of non dry dock buildings right next to it if it is a typical ship yard. Notice also that the next project is 20% completed in front of this one, and off to the side.

no we won't, humanity will not survive long enough to create the technology needed to put that ship in space. we are in the seventh mass extinction of this planet, we have less than 10 years to be nearly free of using fossil fuel or this planet will be damaged beyond repair. I wonder how many trees could be planted with the money it took to construct that ship, enough to save the planet? I think our epitaph will say "It Was Fun While It Lasted".

@Brock Lesnar Alpha Male - Money is the big reason. I also think we need better methods of propulsion, faster than light communication and artificial gravity. Our bodies literally wither away in micro gravity, so humans can't last very long in space. Once we can solve those 3 things, we'll be able to go mine asteroids and do longer duration space missions etc. They already know that faster than light communication is possible due to quantum entanglement. They just need to figure out how to implement it into usable tech. What I would like to see happen first is affordable orbital passenger travel, so you can be anywhere in the world in an hour or less. After that, space hotels for tourism and science. After that, moon base and helium 3 mining. All this is probably 100 years away (assuming we push in that direction) but hopefully by then we'll have figured out better propulsion and artificial gravity. Unfortunately, without the gravity we are stuck here. Wow I really am a freaking nerd.
