I understood that when you drain, you leave quite a lot of fluid still in the box (torque converter). Is that true? Is there a way to drain it all out?

Great explanation except one thing, always loosen the filling plug first, in case you drain everything out and you can't get the filling plus loose you could be in big trouble

You can always fill trough cooler hose inlet. No big deal

​@@martinporter6478 can't correctly measure the oil level in the gearbox if you use an alternative like you say. To many things to go wrong, like pressure in Pan would increase as the gearbox breather wouldn't compensate for the refill (particularly if using same forced induction method. and the cooler hose might not be same level etc, so certainly a big deal?.

How much oil can you action get into the gearbox, looking at the oil/filter pan and fill plug it doesn't appear to hold that much. Does the torque converter still retain the old oil, when it is supposed to hold 6 - 7 litres..

Hi, Thank you for such a detailed and professional video. It's fantastic. I have a 2013 (Vin: J783015) )320D, F30. I have driven the car to 305K or (190'000 miles). This would be the first oil change as earlier BMW advised lifetime oil! Is this procedure the same for my vehicle? And would you have any other advice as it is high millage now?

Thanks for the useful video. It seems that the procedure steps described in this video is somehow different than ZF original instruction manual for 8HP. ZF manual says, after second filling and overfilling 0.5 Liter(while engine is running), the car must be driven in order that the transmission fluid warms up (to 75~80 'C) and the oil cooler thermostat opens. Then ZF says that while we should monitor transmission fluid temp. to stay between 30~50 'C, the the torque converter filling should be done (maintaining the engine RPM at 2000 for 30 seconds) and after that we should put in P/R/D sequentially and then manually shift to D1 and D2 (and hold each for 10 seconds) and after that we should do the final level check from filling hole. So why your procedure is different?

Hello AM Jahan, as you said the car has to be driven to warm up the transmission fluid/let the thermostat open. The torque converter is filled during warm up drive already. Gears have been switched as well. After warm up drive allow gearbox oil to cool down and recheck oil level at temperature between 30 to 50 C°. While engine running refill the necessary amount if needed. Makes the whole procedure easier and more quickly. Best regards, MEYLE-TV

No, you don't need to switch through all the gears manually. Go through P-R-N-D and switch to manaual mode once.

Is there a way to drain the oil cooler also? Its seems the any residual oil left in it will contaminate your new fresh oil once you warm the car up to 75c.

The kit is intended for changing the oil and there is always residual oil in the system. Also in the oil cooler. So if you want to get all of the oil out of the system, you would have to do a transmission flush for automatic transmissions and have it carried out. Or remove the oil cooler, drain it manually, clean it and reinstall it.

I have a bad vibration in 6th gear on 8HP75z from 1500rpm under load? The gearbox was rebuilt and the flywheel replaced. The torsional vibration damper was also checked by BMW. The problem persists and no-one can figure out why its happening. Any idea what could be causing this?

I was planning on just draining oil and refilling without replacing or removing pan, is it possible?

Yes, it is possible, but it doesn`t make sense. The “heart” of the lubrication system of the transmission is the filter, if you do not replace the oil pan, you will not renew the filter element which is part of the oil pan. As a result you will fill in new oil which goes through the dirty filter element, in addition to this the old filter could be completely blocked in the near future. We highly recommend to change the oil pan including the integrated filter.

A question to the Meyle Expert and the Community: I had an appointment at a ZF service point to flush and change the transmission oil of my ZF 8HP45 after 85k km. My F20 is changing gears like a brand new car since then. However, when the transmission gets hot, it starts to smell quite badly via the air vents. This issues occured right after the oil change. After two weeks it is not gone yet, althoug it has improved slightly. The service staff double-checked the transmission. No leakages were found and no oil was outside the gear box. They told me, it is quite common that the F20 or F10 series from BMW tends to smell due to the fresh oil. It should stop smelling after a while. Have you experienced something similar so far? Due to the unfavorable position of the transmission vent, unpleasant exhaust air can actually occur via the engine compartment into the passenger compartment. This has also been confirmed by ZF. We must first assume that the correct oil specification of the transmission was used. However, the oil grade used should be checked again and changed if necessary. If there is still no clear improvement, we recommend that you consult another transmission specialist to rule out a possible thermal problem.

My 2016 Ram 1500 uses the same transmission. I now have 114,000 kms. on it. Is it time for a fluid change? Chrysler says it's "lifetime fluid", but I don't believe them. What do you think?

Because your vehicle has 114,000 km on the clock, you may want to consider a transmission oil change. But you can also look into your own vehicle documents/service booklet or similar. That should also be in there.

You can either look this up directly on the vehicle or in the technical literature. If you drive a BMW with ZF8HP - 8-speed automatic transmission, this can be seen directly at the gearbox.

@@MEYLETV He probably is trying to say that if he can only drain and fill it without turning the engine on, go for a test drive etc Which the answer would be no (the oil level would be low and that's dangerous because overheating and slipping) but you can explain better.
