Nice tour, Markus. FYI: V'ger's Analogue Board is actually a 6-layer board, being the very first Moog synth to have that level of complexity, (and expense). Bob was initially VERY apprehensive about going in that direction, but it was necessary to achieve the level of density required by the circuit design. Little known fact: the layout was originally on TWO boards (Right Analogue Brd. and Left Analogue Brd.), but I successfully made the case that that running signals back and forth via more ribbon cables could possibly compromise overall reliability. For that reason one must be be EXTREMELY careful when replacing parts - if you happen to damage the interior board layers around a plated-through hole, you could create an internal short and possibly have to scrap the whole board...$$$ (gulp!)

Markusfuller. Thank you so much for making this video. According to the manual of the Voyager the backlight can only last about 4000 hours so now I can replace the backlight myself when necessary. If you ever feel like disassembling a Roland V-Synth GT or a Novation Supernova please do. The V-Synth GT suffers from touch screen display problems from time to time and the Novation Supernova 2 is well-known for its main outs that often don't last long.

Hi Bernardo B, I had a V-Synth and it was was not a very good touch screen from the very start, I remember I had problems with it also but sold it to a friend before I had the chance to check out what was inside and it was way before i started making these videos. I have never had my hands on the supernova but I know it is an amazing synthesizer and I think it will be one of those vintage collectable classics in years to come. Hold onto that.
@markusfuller10 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention about the Moog backlight. you could replace it with a LED backlight but the front (sticker) electroluminescent could only be replaced by peeling it off and buying a new one from Moog.
@bernardob322710 жыл бұрын
markusfuller Hello Marcusfuller. Thank you so much for replying. Much appreciated. What made you decide to start making those videos? I am very happy you make those videos, because unfortunately I am not a hardware repair expert. I do know how to solder though, so if I need to repair something your videos are an awesome reference guide. As for the Supernova 2. Rest assured I won't part with it. The stereo output is done for, but the aux outputs function so I can redirect the sound there instead of sending it to the main out. I would love to repair the stereo out one day. I just need to find out how I can open the Supernova 2 without breaking anything and then it will be easy. The sound I can create with the Supernova is amazing so it will never leave the house. It's one of my most favorite synths I own. What is your favorite synth?
@bernardob322710 жыл бұрын
markusfuller Thank you so much for that information that I can replace it with a LED backlight. And of course I will order the front (sticker) electroluminescent then. I used the backlight economically, but now I can use it whenever I want. And yeah, it's a gimmick but a very good one. Even people I know, who are not into synths or musical instruments, are amazed by the backlight when I turn it on.
@ReubenSound10 жыл бұрын
I love your videos, Mark. Looking forward to any synths guts you choose to operate on in the future! Cleaning the insides of my PolyEvolver, Supernova and MS10 synths adds another enjoyment to the hobby. I imagine analogue circuit boards as miniature electric cities! If you have the opportunity to investigate any of these synths and explain all the components that would be great! Thanks, Reuben

This reminds me of so many times in different places, with different people, etc. I've been through a few voyagers in the last decade ( I sold one, and had to return the others due to build quality anomalies. Fortunately moog themselves were absolutely great with a replacement and the one i own now is smooth to play & tweak with a great output) and I can remember that the ones with the back-lit panels had a noisier output stage , as if the luminescent panel contributed to this. Fortunately you can turn it down and even turn it off completely, if i remember correctly. It's a pity they've decided not to make them anymore, but they're also now making more modular synths, including larger footprint incarnations of the older systems, such as the 3P. That is somehting I'd love to get a hold of, just for the power of 10 moog oscillators in a sequenced melodic structure. All in all, I've really enjoyed this video, Markus; loved the sci-fi reference at the end ;-). Thank you for sharing.

I used to have similar one to this, the Voyager OS. The OS was no only cheaper than the fully featured Voyager, but also appealed to me more aesthetically, because it didn't have that touchscreen look-alike touch pad in the center. So, one Black Friday I took the plunge for one, together with the Moogerfooger delay. I was so happy, I got a great deal on it, it was brand new, it sounded nice. But nobody else around me really liked it. Everybody thought I was crazy to get such weird wooden contraption instead of a laptop or something. Duh! Laptop so much better. Or so it is for others, but not me... Anyway, I was in love with the instrument, but then the charm started to go away. The front panel sticker started to bother me, the instrument stopped growing on me. I realized, an analog synthesizer like this with knobs, it's not where I feel at home with. Where I felt truly at home, was the 2x40 character backlit LCD like than on the D-50 or Yamaha V50. These really make me feel warm and fuzzy, the Voyager OS wasn't giving me that. I learned a lesson: be true to yourself. Don't go for fads and fashions... Mind you, voyager sounds nice, it's just the aesthetics didn't happen to grow on me.

Hi Markus and thanks a lot for this useful and really interesting vidéo. I have a small question about the Voyager Do you think that the Voyager is easy to fix (by a confirmed technician with all the necessary tools and equipment) in case of the guarantee is no longer available? For example, if I need to replace a component on a circuit board: is it possible to do it myself or may I have to change the circuit board (which is very expensive) from Moog's technical center? Thanks again for your great job.
@markusfuller9 жыл бұрын
TheGilounet Hi. The Voyager is repairable though there is a fair bit of complicated voodoo magic that goes into making these. I have found that Moog can be very helpful, Just send them an email if you need something and you should get a reply and if they have a spare part they will try to help. also a majority of the components they use are "off the shelf" standard electronics components that you could track down from many suppliers such as Rapid electronics or Mouser or CPC etc

Markus, when you show the output waveforms on the oscillator at 11:30, they seem to contain a certain amount of noise. What could be the reason for that? I'm not deep into oscillators though, maybe it can be tweaked and doesn't refer to sound at all. Btw great video, and so is the whole channel!

+Андрей Лучина Hello I was using a cheap oscilloscope there and I think it was placed next to a power supply unit running the LED shelf lighting so it could have been adding noise to the scope. this is one of my early videos and I am changing things as I go along. thanks for pointing that out to me as I never really took much notice to it at the time.

hi my voyager electric blue's screen stopped showing anything apart from the backlight and no sound comes out, do you have any idea what the problem could be ? it was working fine then one day nothing on the screen and no sound. Do you think I will need a new part for it to work again ? Thanks
@markusfuller8 жыл бұрын
Hello it sounds as if you may have a power fault somewhere. the blue backlight behind the controls has its own dedicated power supply so that is why that may still be working though im not sure if it takes 12 volts from the main power unit but the synth and display uses the main power supply and one of the voltages may be missing. I would check for voltages in that area first to make sure there is different selections of power coming from the main unit.

Just out of curiosity, when you took the mod and pitch wheel section out, I noticed a green wire that looks like it attached to the bolt of what would be the rubber foot on the underside. Mine is not attached. Should it be? What problems could arise if it is not? I'm assuming it's a ground for something, but don't know enough about electronics to say for sure myself.
@markusfuller8 жыл бұрын
Hi David. I do not have that synth any more (pity) but yes you are correct that it would have been a grounding cable, if yours is not in the same place then it should not affect your synth as there would be one somewhere else or it would rely on the screws through the metal plates to do the actual grounding.

So how do the pots work? Are they digital (for recall etc) and get converted to CV?
@markusfuller9 жыл бұрын
metalboxhead Hi. they are just regular variable potentiometers but the voltage is passed to an analog to digital converter, that number is stored and passed onto a digital to analog (microchip) potentiometer which the synth uses. that way a selectable memory of where the pot is can be stored and recalled from memory.

May I ask your favorite synth? which is your "go to"
@markusfuller9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Frost Hi Michael. if I try making some music up (which is rare as i don't get time) I always start on the Korg KronosX88 using the piano only, from there when ideas start I like the Moog Sub37 for the low notes bass lines etc then the JD-XA for the sprinkles of synth sounds basically because i still have not learned how to use it fully yet so it throws surprises at me and sounds I would not have even tried to make. but constructing music is done using cubase. the problem is time I have many hours of my own music here and there and everything is in a state of unfinished, I am never happy with my own music always too critical always thinking there is something missing somewhere but then saving it as a project to get back to one day in the future. also at the moment I'm having tons of fun with the ableton push but again I need more knowlege and understanding in just what can be done with it. but a Favourite Synth ? I don't actually have one as I can never do everything i want to do just on one synthesizer.

i am loughing now cause if the knobs are attached to a digital board it means that analog fanatics should stop complaining about digital knobs-filters etc since this way they use a knob that translates your moving the knob into digital steps.... now how funny is than? "oooh i like all analog cause analog so good dr evil. analog has no steps when moving knobs. it`s so creamy cause it`s analog!" well guess what! it`s not! muaaa mua muaaaaaa!!!
