Nice tuner.

I used to have one of those. I sold it when I sold my 818. I used to burn my fingers on the screw in the knobs on the regular. I ended up putting tape around them.

I have used this tuner for years with my FT-817 and never new it could handle 100 watts. I lug around the huge MFJ manual tuner but after seeing this I will have to try it. THANKS!!! de KE5ES.

I use one of those in my POTA kit. 100W on my FT891. My antenna is usually pretty close to good. So it is only taking it from 1.3 or 1.4 down to 1:1. But I have used it to tune my 40m EFHW on 80m and it did it. Likely not efficient there but it worked and I got QSOs.

That looks like a keeper. A huge plus that no batteries needed 👍

I got this same tuner when I ordered my 705 as a backup to my T1 and so far it works well. I think it's neat to manually tune with when you have a real-time analyzer plugged in and can see what it's doing. Not sure if I would trust it at 100W though, I'll have to try that myself. At $50 it's no great loss if it burns up. 😛

Well, that's on my list now. I have the older Xiegu X108G and have been using the internal analyzer to manually tune my antennas. The 20 watts from the 108 is more than most QRP tuners will handle so this is good news for me.

Great video. Very informative. Interesting to know that the little tuner will work up to 100 watts. I like the idea where MFJ chose to use BNC's on the tuner. I wish all radios with 200 watts or less would used BNC's instead of PL 259's. I know you were really discussing the tuner and not focusing on making antennas, but...... your HWEF40 is a 1/4 wave resonant radiator on 80 meters. For efficiency, you would be better off bypassing the UnUn, adding one radial and feeding the antenna direct with coax. Thanks for posting this video. Well done ! Barry, KU3X/QRP

When you have an antenna mismatch you have current passing through the tuner in both directions at the same time (SWR). This is where you need more current rating on a tuner than you have on the radio. Most tuners for 100 watt radios are rated for around 300 watts for this reason. The more resonant the antenna the less likely you are to exceed this tuners 100 watt rating but don't be surprised if you hear sparking inside, or see the SWR jumping around while tuning up as the caps have already been flashed over, or the inductor switch has a bad spot that's been blown out from arcing.

Agreed. Jason really needs to open it up and look at what components are in it. If it has those cheap plastic capacitors its definitely wont handle 100W.

I wouldn’t run 100 watts. DX engineering rates it at 25 watts.

I've seen them fail with 20 to 30 watts. They are made with very poor quality components like so many of their other products. Mfj qc has always been bad, it's really bad now. Equipment showing up not finished, missing knobs, case screws, defective pushbottons, cold solder joints or no solder.

Great video. I am currently using the new MAT-705 plus tuner. It tunes my resonant 75m dipole with a swr of 9+ on 3.5mhz just fine. it's disadvange compared to this is, battery powered and only 30watts.

Okay, this would be great for my 817ND and my QCX20 and QCX40 as well as my Bitx40 and uBitx!! This is just what I have been looking for Jason!! Thanks for sharing your review of this. Off to MFJ to place my order!! This should work well I think with either my 40 Meter EFHW or even my random wire EF antenna. Heck, this may be a good thing to have with my wolf river coil clone antenna I built. Will have to experiment, but that is what ham radio is all about. Juddie - WD8WV

It's a shame they didn't include a simple LED tuning lamp like some others do, would make it easier. My G-106 has no swr meter built in.

Looks like a pretty nifty little transmatch (I do own some other MFJ products), but when did QRP ever denote 100W? I'd call that a marketing fail.

Watch out, I got a burn from mine. The screws that hold the knobs in place are connected to the pin on the coax. Ouch! I'll be making a vid on this too soon.

Why not just add a 110uH coil & ~2.5m of wire to the end of your 40-10EFHW? That'll put 80m on your EFHW.

Tune your antenna lol they tune/trick your radio into thinking everything is ok enough function. The original problem still not fixed. You just keep running mismatch equipment.

I've noticed so many hams nowadays think a tuner is normal to have. Does nobody know how to properly tune an antenna anymore? They think they absolutely have to tune out that 1.5 swr to 1.1 with a tuner. So many depend solely on a built in auto tuner in a radio to tune anything attached. They have there place, but for everything?

Well. I bought one based on this video. Use it with an 891. Had to see. Normally run a WRC 1000 so I’m “resonant” across the bands. But for the occasion I need one figured why not. Used a 20m dipole on 40m. Matched it just fine. Running it at 100w on SSB as folks would have you believe it’d blow up the first time you keyed up. I’ve run ft8 at 50w to hammer the little booger. Works like a champ. Hasn’t blown up as the you tube university electrical engineers said it would. I’m glad I got it. Thanks for the video.
