No, What I saw was pure beauty based on simplicity. The auto tuning one would be overkill. Some of the parts remind me of my first crystal set I built, and the tapped coil reminds me of the incremental tuning section from an old two tube battery radio from the 1920s. Keep up the good videos. A teardown of a piece of old equipment I will never get my hands on is priceless. Glad you got it for $40. Best of luck on your license.

I just bought a MFJ 041 D. Thanks for the information on the tuner. I understand it more after you show. 9M6DC.

Mine has mud dauber nests all over the outside of it. I am thrilled to have had a look inside of yours, so I know what it SHOULD look like before I lift the cover of mine. Bonus! I learned a smidgen about how it's supposed to work, too. Thanks a heap for the help. KFØGER

Cool stuff. Expensive mostly empty box. But hey if you gotta have one you gotta have one. Thanks for the explanation for us non radio guys!

My MFJ tuner has noisy variable capacitor and it looks like the contact on the rear has lost tension with the body / shaft. Anyone have success with fixing the problem?
@michaelpadovani95667 жыл бұрын
Believe any freq tuner (incl tv and radio) is set up very similarly...ie a variable inductor and variable capacitor. Cool to see this opened up to reveal the simple guts.

Thank you. I am an amateur radio operator. Yes, RF does get weird at times.

If the coax switch fails like mine did, the cost of a replacement switch is about 25 bucks, however, replacing the switch is a nightmare.....don't try it because 25 bucks goes down the drain. Only hope is to get a picture of the original printed circuit board. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO GET A PIC OF CIRCUIT BOARD FOR MFJ-941D? W2TSA

For receiving only, does anyone think antenna tuners offer significant signal improvement to justify their expense?

Peter Ashley They do make an improvement that is worth it, but you dont need big bulky coils and expensive capacitors for that, since if receivenonly the components dont have to withstand high voltages and you can use some capacitors from old radios and any copperwire you want.

Try a small magnetic loop. Lots of advantages and low cost. Otherwise you ARE killing your RX when the impedance matching is horribly askew--but it's nothing near as critical as matching for a transmitter. Try a tuned wire against an untuned to see. Maybe you have ham pals to show you such.

Do you have a video on setting up a proper workbench?!? I used to take electronics in High School many moons ago. I'm currently looking on Ebay buying tools and equipment. But again been out of touch with it. So I first bought me an actual curriculum textbook.

Nice unit! They may be pricey but B&W gets well over $100 for an inductor that size. Sad but true!

You know that, and I know that, but then we don't need tuners that do all the work for us! Half the fun is twisting the knobs! 😋

"El Cheapo"???? I've had mine for over 23 years - it's done what it's supposed to do and has been very reliable. In fact, in my opinion it's the best shack antenna tuner for 300 watts and under for the money. Lots of versatility. Auto tuning? You pay extra for that. If you have the variable caps and the ability to wrap a tapped coil, you can build your own... I've done it.. de: KE7LOY.
