"Chaser's War on Everything" trashes APEC security

A segment from "The Chaser's War on Everything" tv series that aired on Aussie tv channel ABC, 12th. Sept. 2007. The Chasers gang made a mockery of security at the APEC conference held in September in Sydney Australia, and left Aussie police red faced. One hundred and sixty million dollars was spent on security for the conference attended by many world leaders, including the US President, but the Chasers gang in a fake motorcade with joke 'insecurity' badges and a Bin Laden look alike drove to within meters of GWB's hotel, but could have driven right to the hotel, as they were not stopped at any security checkpoints. The stunt only ended when they chose to end it themselves!

Listen to that little "Uh..." sound Julian Morrow makes at 3:20 when the guard tells him they're fine to go through and the way he glances around nervously. He was absolutely floored by the fact that they were getting through and more than a little scared- they never intended to get through the first hurdle with their obviously fake motorcade! But he rallied like a trooper and the show went on!

Oh boy, I remember watching this on TV when I was 12, and I laughed so fucking hard. I absolutely loved how they managed to do this stunt, which to be honest... was such a ballsy stunt to pull. This was definitely the Chaser at their finest. And what makes this even more spectacular, is that apart from Chas, Julian and the rest of the crew involved with the stunt getting arrested and later charged over the stunt, they ultimately got away with it scot-free because the security gave "tacit" permission for them to enter the no-go zone. That's why the DPP dropped the charges against them six months after the stunt.

Actually, it is fairly easy to get in a lot of places. Well, much less so with cards with chips or barcodes, but... if you can believe it, one place instituted those not because of security (you could get like almost anything in or out despite scanners & metal detectors by the simple act of going to an unguarded part of the fence and having a friend), but because more than one person entered per pass sometimes and there weren't enough chairs for everyone. Now there are. Yay. But as a rule, once past the 1-2 checkpoints, if you look officious enough, no one bothers you ever... yeah if someone doesn't go and there is a spot free I like to go to events, even if my name is most certainly not whatever is on the pass.
