Probably, I also considered nylon rollers but all those involve thinning down the dowel that would hold them. In that case it would need to be hardened steel, or else it would bend/break

Or the other option would be to get some UHMW tape (say from Lee Valley) to stick on the bearing surfaces of the cantilever arms.

Cool mechanism but how does the claw stay in the open position when you reached the top?

The last tooth on the rack is longer so it pushes the pivoting tooth back further, where it is captured by a wooden latch.
