While working, two of the wheels stopped pushing down, so I rolled out the camera. Surprisingly the high tension springs are all attached with ridiculously short wood screws. I had to tap a wider and deeper hole and use a more solid metric screw to prevent this from happening again.

Dear Timothy Thank you for sharing this video. For us at FELDER it is always important to get a feedback to our products. The problem you showed us in your video is very uncommon. According to our QC records there was only one case reported in the last years. The installed screw is a self-tapping screw. Therefor it normally sits very tight and should not come loose. Maybe the screw was not tightened with the proper momentum in the first place. We will investigate in issue and try to find a better solution for the future. If you have any other issues in the future we would be happy to hear from you directly. Felder Group Austria

I have to say I'm impressed with the Felder Group's quick post on the issue regarding one of their machines. I'm getting ready to make a final decision on purchasing a CF 741 S for my shop in NY. This would be my first Felder purchase, and it's reassuring to see they care about their customers.

Timothy, that's one very fine job in tearing into the Felder feeder, finding the failure -- and fixing it. : D This video would be right at home on AvE's channel. Of course, he would probably have added some rather spicy voice-over.

I believe this feeders are all build in far-east. I once found the only manufacturer and he builds all feeders we commonly know. Even my 35 years old ELU feeder is now build by them (and maybe have been built even those days by them). And any feeder has its dirty little secrets.

Brilliant. The only question mark for me is the grease and its potential to gum up over time with saw dust.
@TimothyWilmots
@TimothyWilmots 7 жыл бұрын
It had white grease originally, so I sprayed some back on. Considering this one has been running almost daily for nearly 4 years, the dust build up was reasonably low imo.

I hope Felder techs see this - the engineering team must have had an off day when they decided to use those crummy screws. BTW Did you consider changing out the other screw?
@TimothyWilmots

Looking back I should have, but I put it back in with loctite before trying to fix the other. So I didn't yet know I was going to do the tapping etc...

Engineers know that coarse threads hold better in cast iron than machined screws.
@bertv1205
@bertv1205 7 жыл бұрын
Well, they should also have considered that a shallow hole will not hold. Coarse thread or not.

Four years later, we all want to know if that repair did the trick. My guess it didn't. Two springs moving back and forth is just too much for one screw to handle.

And when those tiny threads shear off that machine is done
@TimothyWilmots
@TimothyWilmots 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, originally it had no threads, it was just tiny screws screwed directly into the aluminium with no threads, barely 5mm deep. It was deemed to fail. I tapped a hole 3x deeper. If the original screws lasted 3 years, this new one should go forever.
