I feel like the filmmakers realized quickly that Vince wasn't going to tell them anything of substance and did their best with what he was going to give them. I think he realized it was a bad idea after the first interview with them, and instead of trying to get out of it he was going to do what he has always done and spin a narrative but they weren't buying it.

It's definitely an admission of a complete inability to fathom empathy. I thought Vince was scum for years and I still can't believe he was dumb enough to say that. The guy is beyond any form of redemption.

My understanding is, initially they had done a lot of recording and interviews that highlighted Vince focusing on his childhood and other personal things before he joined wrestling business and stuff, but i feel after that lawsuit came out, those were removed

This doc was more for casuals that don’t watch or did watch, but stopped. So it makes sense that to you it was 90 WWE and 10 Vince. To casuals that extra bit of context about the company would/should do a better job guiding them in understanding why the character of Mr. McMahon was so integral to the company. Was it disappointing that the doc didn’t go in on Vince? Yes, but this was about the character. No matter how you feel about recent events.

David Shoemaker said in Bill Simmons podcasr that Vince didn't know what type of story he wanted to tell and also said that he felt that Vince didn't know himself well enough to tell that story. And I think it was a good deal for Netflix because it is better to tackle these subjects rather than avoiding, specially when the documentary ends saying that the company is thriving with Vince gone.

Even before he said the Statute of Limitations line, didn't he say what happened with Rita Chatterton was consensual, which is the first time he's acknowledged that anything happened between them, right?

What done it injustice was the overall hype of it. Janel Grant had a press conference before it came out, and Vince had put out a statement before it came out. So we were left with the impression, "Oh shit, This is gonna be a real hit piece." After that, we felt disappointed/lied to in a real way. I have seen better fan-made docs on Vince right here on YT that were better than this. This was just done on a more official level. It was good tho, I mean...Had a great time watching it. What I think may happen however, Once the trial is over, And Janel Grant Civil Suit is settled. I feel we may actually get a part 2.

I think that the documentary was intended to be a history of Mr McMahon and his legacy in the WWE. By the end it turned into a piece against Mr McMahon and his allegations. These are two different subjects and that's why I felt so disjointed in the actual documentary. He never agreed to do a show talking about his sexual exploitations. I don't think it was a bad idea for Netflix it's not like they're going to lose viewers of raw that the most loyal viewers of all time and if anything this is going to pick the answers of people who weren't interested in WWE since they have their introduction to it. Vince is not there anymore.

Vince seemed uninterested in really diving into anything in detail. I don’t know who could have got much out of him. He came off like a man who was mystified anyone cares. However, this also didn’t make him look good because the serious issues that occurred over the years got mostly a “Eh, oh well.” attitude from him. He seems like a terrible person driven by his own fucked up past. He never evaluated his own life at all and then just took out his issues one everyone around him.

A bit that’s really annoyed me is the part in episode 6 where Phill Mushinck says that “the fans didn’t seem to care that the wrestlers were dying.” Just over a year ago we found out Bray Wyatt had died, I woke up to that news and literally wept before going to work. Even though that part was filmed before Brays passing it doesn’t change the fact that fans “didn’t care”. While I applaud him for calling Vince out in the earlier episodes the comments he made really hurt. Maybe I’m miss hearing him and maybe he’s talking about the company not caring. Either way it’s still pretty insensitive.

I think his point was that pro wrestling culture kills people at a young age, and we keep supporting it without speaking out about changing things. I totally agree. Been heartbroken by every death, and it just sucks because it feel inevitable.

Like you said this isn't for the hardcore wrestling fan. That's what makes it such a bad idea. You already know that Vince is a terrible person and will or won't watch WWE based on that information. But the casual fans who might decide to try watching some wrestling, and who this is targeted at are going to be less interested after learning who Vince is.

I think Netflix are going for the scandal-chasing car-crash-TV audience with the wrestling: they view wrestling as sordid fare like Tiger King or Making a Murderer, where the outrageous elements are the foundation for its entire appeal. Therefore the scandal associated with McMahon is actually beneficial from their perspective. That's part of why the documentary seemed to be about WWE history more than McMahon himself: they grasped any opportunity they could take to show either the goofy Rock & Wrestlong/New Generation Era, or the worst excesses of the Attitude era. Typical tabloid journalism, tut-tutting the sex & violence with barely disguised glee, even as they say "of course, this stuff would *never* fly today, we would *never* do this now" even though it's being shown in a documentary in 2024.

Everyone knows Vince's was a cancer on the wrestling industry and the documentary explained it to the normies out of the loop. Good to see Steph, Shane and Triple H come out of it as the winners though it did lead the company being sold to Endeavor. Like I Imagine 30 years down the line when Triple H is out of creative and most of the old guard has died off, the only ones left are the people Ari Emmanuel and the rest of the TKO board chose. I fear that future cause I don't trust normies to run a wrestling company. I would have preferred WWE be run as a family business with Shane and Steph.

13:18 They never really dropped the angle in Kayfabe from what I remember, they just treated it like how they treat Kane and Undertaker and bring it up when it suits storyline purposes. But as per Reddit, Edge is the lineal father of Dominik as of March 2024.

Come on, Steve, this is the era of content. You know that. Attention is attention. The only bad idea, as always, was Vince even doing interviews. The last time he looked partially human was on McAfee. His self-awareness radar has never functioned properly.

It’s very clear that the McMahon doc was supposed to be a hype piece for Raw coming to Netflix. Catch people up on the biggest historical moments and characters, and we’ll give you a little bit of Vince but nothing too big. Maybe they meant for the last episode and the later Vince interviews to cover more of present day. WWE in the pandemic, etc. But then what happened happened, and they had to pivot. And it cost enough that they had to put it out. Hoping they did it early enough that it doesn’t tarnish the Netflix debut.

I think the producers had a hard time transitioning the doc once the lawsuit came out. It likely was never supposed to be a hit piece but “had” to become one AFTER they had filmed 90% of it, the thesis got changed late

It's pretty obvious it was planned a puff piece. With everyone speaking positively about Vince. Then when the allegations dropped, they had to do re-shoots and edit the doc in a way to make Vince look worse.

I forget the exact details but there’s a factoid in wrestling history that when time had passed after Vince sr had given the WWWF to Vinnie junior he had written a letter (I forgot to who exactly) basically expressing remorse about the decision and that was only because of what had happened with the demise of the territories, one could only imagine what Vince sr would think of what his adopted son would turn into as just a garbage human.

To me, I say that it was a great way to bury Vince (in an indirect way). I say this because they didn't explicitly say he was a lying pervert, but the way some of the talking heads in the episode's reactions and stories of Vince really put him in a negative light, so I say it is a success on that part.

So when the documentary was started years ago, it was in collusion with Vince. But he told Netflix personnel not to take it easy on him and to portray him accurately. Then the allegations and the resignations happened. So they definitely did not take it easy on him, but they also look foolish forgetting into financial bed with him at the same time😂.
