You skipped a VERY important line in the license fees section. You said "I don't know what that means." and skipped ahead. The next sentence in that paragraph said that Hogan gets 25% of all non-talent specific NWO merchandise. So he's getting 50% of all his merchandise (which is just insane. Most guys were lucky to get 10%) AND he's getting 25% of all NWO merchandise that does not have anything to do with Hulk Hogan (plus the giant fee he got just for wearing the shirts). So he was getting paid for his own merch and the merch that was not even his. If Hall and Nash had the same deal when it comes to NWO merch, that means WCW only kept 25% of profits. They then had to split that 25% between all the other 100 members of the NWO. WCW was making NOTHING off all that merchandise. What horrible business dealings. The company brought in dump trucks full of cash for years, but it doesn't look they were able to keep much of it at all considering what Hogan was getting plus Hall, Nash, Bret Hart, Savage, Sting, and Flair were all getting (not as much as Hogan I'm sure, but still a big chunk). Jesus....

This is mentioned in the Death of WCW book. Jericho's fiance bought action figures of Jericho and Malenko, but the receipt showed it was for Hogan and Sting, so Hogan and Sting collected the residuals. It's good to be the Hulk, brother ...

"Hogan gets 25% of all non-talent specific NWO merchandise." What makes this crazier is that this contract was signed the same year the NWO split into NWO Hollywood & NWO Wolfpac. If I'm reading this correctly, Hogan got paid for Wolfpac merchandise, even though he was in the rival stable. And since it was an off-shoot stable, did he get residuals for LWO merchandise as well?

Its a shitty contract Steve for WCW (not for Hogan, for Hogan it was great!) and yes this is part of the reason why it all went wrong for WCW was because of the glass celing that was Hulk Hogan. I think Kevin Nash said it best when he said that you have to play "Hogan's way" or you dont get used.

It's especially not a good deal (for WCW) in 1998. When Hogan jumped in 94 and when he turned heel in 96 he was a game changer for WCW and arguably worth whatever it took to get him, but by 98 I'm not sure he was still providing that much value, and likely didn't have much juice to go elsewhere. Vince certainly wasn't going to pay him like this at that point.

This was a great contract... for Hogan. WCW could have done so much to make this a better contract for themselves. I don't think WWE would have given him anywhere the money he was getting. Don't think WWE wanted him back at the time either so they had a lot more leverage than they believed.

It's hard to see how it was back then. Back then he was the Michael Jordan of the industry. So the thought at this time was give Hogan whatever he wants. Because as long as we have him we will be fine because he's such a big star. Obviously we have the extremely fortunate position of having watched this play put 20 years ago. So now it's very easy to say "this was so stupid. This shouldn't of happened " but back then we had no point of reference of "what if this turns out bad" so yea don't think it even crossed WCW to take that out of the contract

Hogan was the face of WWF. A lot of people that if it was not for Hogan, the WWF would not have made it. But, the problem is, Hogan was only great during the early '80's to early '90's. WCW getting him made headlines, but he was stale. Vince was smart to get rid of him and let some younger talent start to rise up. I really think the heart of the NWO were Hall and Nash. Yes, it was incredible when Hogan was revealed to be the third man, but after that pop, it felt like it was just Hogan. Hogan really made out with the WCW.

I'd have to see the financials of WCW during these years and probably 2-3 years prior. Also i would want ratings comparing shows with and without Hulk Hogan to see how much of a draw he really was. But that clause about the finishes of matches is just unforgivable. Why have a booker and GM at that point? I mean thats like letting a QB make all personel decisions on a football team. Theu should be consulted, not given charge of.

Hogan was working without contract for monthes when he signed this new deal in may 98. He met Vince multiple time in public places (retaurants, clubs, stadium skyboxes) during this period of free agency. WCW was afraid he would jump, they had to give him what he wanted to stay. Note: As Bruce Pritchard said, Vince showed in public with Hogan just to make WCW panick and allow his old friend Bollea to obtain the perfect deal. At this time, Viince didn't really need Hogan and he wasn't willing to pay him millions as WCW was doing. But WCW didn't knew it was all show, they though that Vince & Hulk inking a deal was a real possibiility. In final, WCW just gave Hogan what Hogan wanted.

Hell yeah this was a bad contract for one main reason.. The fact that he had creative control over his matches.. This explains why Macho man could never ever have a decent run as champion this explains why Lex couldnt hold the title long this explains that damn finger poke of company doom.. Hogan had the final say on these matches.. Smdh.. Hogan did bring enough sponsors and enough exposure to wrestling. His turn to the darkside was great for business. So i get that but having creative control on how a match goes... No company should ever risk that and it explains why Hogan put over Billy kidman it was in his contract to be reasonable about it so he went with Billy of all people just to be an @$$... Yet though to prove they where bringing in money though think about how much they had to pay Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.. Wcw had the money but they gave people like Hogan to much power.. Damn...

How is it that you forget that him turning heel and forming the NWO made up more than his contract. No other wrestler could have done that. You must have not been around seeing the impact HH had from 84-91. Hogan is bank. It’s bad writing and deals that made WCW tank.

I believe Hulk was as valuable as this contract suggests, but wrestling audiences get tired of the same shtick and neither Hollywood or Red and Yellow Hogan were going to bring in the same audiences they had in the past. We needed to see a whole new Hulk and that was never going to happen while he had creative control.

As much as I despise Hogan, he can actually wrestle. Check out his matches in Japan, lol. Didn't bother showing his skill off in America.

Cody: "Hey, TK. I want this as my contract. But let's set the television tapings at 10 per year. And whenever I'm not at an event, everyone should be talking about me. Like 'Where's Cody?' and 'I sure do miss Cody' and 'This show would be so much better with Cody here, by gum!' Because I'm an ATTRACTION."

Not a bad contract at all. Ask for what you feel you're worth, if they give it to you then that's on them. Feel the same about Brock's contract.

He put over Goldberg once. But he was also the orchestrator of the finger poke of doom, that really hurt Goldberg. And never put him over again, which contributed to the death of WCW.

Love to see the Hulkster milk the money marks for every penny, a beautiful contract and Bischoff needs to stfu about Russo honestly, Bischoff is the biggest idiot in wrestling history lol and i'm a huge Hogan mark but i'd never pay him this much lol People really overstate the creative control though, that's kinda just writing out what is already de-facto true for everyone, no wrestler can be forced to do a job if they don't want to, they have to agree to it, otherwise i'd really like to know who'd force Ken Shamrock to job to anyone in the WWF lol Especially in Hogan's position where you can't just fire him you'd have no choice but to reach some consensus with him, clause or no clause that clause is merely what is the de-facto situation already but doing it in writing

Bischoff had nothing to do with the contract, it was Turner Entertainment talent relations that negotiated all deals over a certain dollar amount, and those people had no idea how wrestling works behind the scenes. It was a recipe for disaster, but it wasn’t Bischoff’s fault.
