The Problems with WCW Gimmick Matches: They did not get everyone on the same page about the rules (or somebody changed the rules, brother). They didn't verify if the matches would function properly within the laws of physics. They didn't verify if the matches would hurt the wrestlers thanks to the laws of physics They didn't verify if the wrestlers/celebrities belonged in this kind of match They didn't verify if the audience could see/follow the match. Gimmicks were booked all the time, without warning or reason, to the point they were diluted The matches were overbooked in ways that made the gimmicks pointless

Did they have a house show loop? I don't understand why they didnt test some of these in front of a live crowd: A, to see their reaction. and B, to make sure the gimmick even worked (like you said, the laws of physics doesnt care how good your imagination is).

In terms of Gimmick Matches in WCW, I always remember the Thunderdome Cage Match between Funk/Muta and Sting/Flair. All the hype about the electrified top of the cage, then part of the cage gets set on fire BEFORE the match starts and Muta has to mist the fire just to put it out. I know they tried to play off the electrified cage gimmick later in the match, but it makes me think TNA was watching this match when they thought of THEIR Electrified Cage Match in 2007

Fun fact about the Term Catch: we still use it in france to talk about pro wrestling while amateur is called "lutte"
@BiggieTrismegistus5 күн бұрын
That makes sense because what evolved into pro wrestling started out as a legitimate catch-as-catch-can wrestling. It was a combination of various kinds of American and British folk wrestling, Irish collar-and-elbow, and pehlwani wrestling from India. Over time the wrestlers realized by "working" the matches they could increase the audience's interest. When wrestling was added to the 1904 Olympics all the submission moves were banned and that new sport was called "freestyle wrestling". "Catch wrestling" was basically what's called "submission grappling" today. Essentially it's MMA without the striking.
