MG HS is a great car for its price tag, BUT how does it compare to MG ZST in 2021? I own both MG HS and ZST and I'm ready to tell you what's up!
While MG HS is larger and a bit more expensive, ZST still packs a punch for its price range and all the included features in MG ZST Essence model. I drive both cars regularly and love them for different reasons that I'll tell you about in this video.
I truly believe that both MG HS and MG ZST are worth exploring if you're shopping around for a new car in 2021 or early 2022, as MG would have cars in stock while other brands most likely won't be able to get any new vehicles for you in months - if any of the other points I'm sharing with you in this video don't resonate with you for any reason! ;)

Thanks for the info. I was actually at the dealer this morning looking at the MG cars. Your review is very helpful. I was looking at HS & ZST but tend to go with ZST and your opinion on ZST over HS in term of city driving / parking, practicality, etc, strengthen my view toward ZST. Of course, pricing also matter. I don't prefer larger SUV since there won't be any passengers sitting at the back seat. ZST size is just nice, similar to the size I have with my Nissan Dualis. All am waiting now is the trade-in valuation for my Nissan before I jump to MG.

Great logic and all makes sense to me, judging by your use-case mate. I hope you get a good deal, as that's another massive benefit of Chinese cars right now as they penetrate many markets and are generally under-priced and easier to negotiate on. With 7 year warranty we both should be covered quite well on ZST in case anything goes wrong.

I'd guess - comparable volume - but in HS it's flat, and in ZST it's "deep" like a hole. Specs you can probably find online - there are downloadable brochures from MG

You're most welcome. What is your budget like? After having owned both MG and GWM Haval, I'd say you get more for your money with Haval, but the entry price might be a tiny bit higher. "As-new" second hand options could be also an option (and would save you money while still having an almost untouched warranty).

Hello mate, my wife had Fiat 500x for a very short while five-ish years ago and while the car looked amazing, she simply didn't like the drive too much, so we sold it. Beautiful cars, but not the greatest dealership network in AU, apparently not great service support, and so on.... I'm yet to find out what MG is like, but at least it comes with a solid 7 year warranty etc.

Hello mate, I think the car has a lot of headroom and leg room, but it obviously depends how tall and if you need maximum amount of space in front as well as at the back AND at the same time... I still think it's probably one of the largest cabin space mid-sized SUVs out there, but would recommend that you go to a local dealership and sit in one to make sure it's right for you.

Hi...I'm tall as well..I'm 6'2"... My wife and I tested out the MG HS SUV.. I found it to be super comfy n plenty of leg room as a driver..a passenger front and sitting in the back seats..no issues whatsoever...were buying the MG HS top model Trophy...awesome SUV and the price was equal to 24k US dollars...it's in the Philippines...hope this helps..but go see for yourself..

I am thinking of taking an MG in Indonesia. Has been using Wuling Almaz (MG Hector) in the past 3 years and looking for replacement car. HS is more sense in terms of size and features, but ZS facelift is just recently being launch with better features and look. Guess I should wait for HS facelift then.. Agree. I test drove the HS PHEV and the ZST Essence and found the sliding door of the middle console useless. I see the thinking and aesthetics behind it, but it's not ergonomic at all. All I can think of is that it can be just left open if up don't need it.

Yep ergonomics in HS is not the worst I've ever seen, but pretty useless and simply outdated by the standards we expect even from Chinese car makers in 2023

Having test drive both HS excite and top range JST at the weekend I was drawn to the HS , having had a toyota kluger 2005, i found HS comparable. I couldn't justify buying a new toyota kluger and this MG is within my price range. Great feedback for you having both vehicles to compare.

Thanks for sharing your impressions mate, even though I wouldn't have gone as far as fairly comparing HS to a Kluger simply because of how different the 2 vehicles are. Kluger is a legit large SUV, while HS is a mid-sized lifted car, rather than a real SUV... Plus, maybe AWD HS model would offer you somewhat comparable traction with the road and offroad capabilities, but otherwise I'd imagine Kluger would win head and shoulders over in that department? In terms of luxury and value for money for a similar-ish size new car, there's absolutely no competition to MG.

Wow Phil, this sounds bad as it can't be just an accidental flick of a wrong switch... I'd immediately call the dealership and book the car into service. Windows are essential for safety and general use - I'd say, don't wait mate, go let them sort it out for you

Hello my friend, the problem is that we haven't had MG in Australia long enough to have any conclusive recommendations. Our ZST is coming up to 20k on the clock, but that's nothing in the grand scale of things... So far no issues with either, no knocking, but maybe we are just lucky.

We rarely drive with people on the back seats, so wouldn't be able to tell you exactly, but air con is certainly adequate and sufficient for the front seats and the interior in general.

Hi again. I have a M.G. HS 2022 and like many other owners as well as some other makes, I have seen lots of videos speak about the 1.5-2 second delay. for example, you accelerate from stationary, such as you want to pull out inbetween the traffic gap. getting my car moving from 0, without the "lag", 1.5-2seconds, to pull out safely. it may not seem long but with traffic it is significantly important. I have seen many video saying to get a throttle controller, they show how this seems to have reduced the delay. So why don't the manufacturers fix this in the programming of the ECU? Been as you have experienced driving M.G. with this known issue with the DCT on the M.G.s, have you any experience in this solution of a throttle controller or could do a video to compare to see if it truley does fix the M.G. takeoff lag? I've had two, M.G. HS FWD and AWD vehicles (more noticable on the AWD) and I can only think this throttle controller will fix this. what are your thoughts? Thank you. love your videos. :)

Mate it's a good question and I wouldn't risk providing a conclusive opinion here because I'm no expert and not a mechanic. I'm just an honest private owner. I don't know what causes it, but tend to see it as yet another "beta-version" aka "not polished enough" system of a cheaper Chinese brand that's cutting (some) corners. It could be in electronic tuning of the DCT or throttle, or something else. Who honestly knows? It's your guess as it is mine if an after market throttle controller is going to fix it. I was simply unhappy with MG HS DCT, which was the main reason to sell, but then I can tell you - I've tried a few other cars in a close price category since that point, and all of them had some issue of their own...

I'd recommend that you look at a properly sized (larger) family SUV, not a car that tries to squeeze into SUV market. E.g. MG HS is good but the boot is too small. If you have 2 kids plus you and your partner and plan to travel, there won't be enough space for everyone and everything in the car. Consider Haval H5 or M6 (if you're outside of AU).

Go for a test-drive and see how both cars feel. ZST has enough space for 3 of you for sure, but at some point you will outgrow it, no doubt. It also doesn't have enough "vertical space" inside for the passengers, so if you're tall-ish, you'd struggle more in ZST than in HS. To drive around town, ZST is a lot more pleasant. To drive on a highway, HS wins.

Fair enough mate, and HS is a beautiful car by all means. I still think ZST is a more polished and robust product for every day quick and intense city driving (unless you need more space, then you're in my shoes mate where I had to buy an LDV D90...)

I'm steering clear of 2wd models because it's based from a ladder frame t60. If the d90 is a unibody, then I can consider. If I want 2wd suv then it's either zs or HS. Ladder frame (further) heightens the Centre of gravity. I used to have a unibodied Mitsubishi Pajero. For a 4x4 it felt very stable. Not the best but more than enough to keep the Pajero drivable. That's why I rather have 4wd on ladder frame 4x4s.

If you haven't test driven Jolion yet, one last thing I can recommend is watch that comparison video of mine and then decide. Don't go for MG as a brand BEFORE at least checking it against Haval.

In all honestly mate I don't know enough about Mazda but can safely assume that the build quality is probably comparable, warranty is generous, and you'd probably get a lot more features for the same (or lower? check with your dealers!) price.
