It's not the smallest car ever but possibly the one with the least amount of room inside. James brought this lovely little car for me to drive and it was certainly an experience.

Many owners drive the Midget with the top off. Then it is easier to drop in rather than post yourself through the small doors. Once in, it is like wearing a glove. As it is a convertible car, it would have been good to do a review with the top down, because it is a different car with the roof off.

Once I put a roof on my Frogeye Sprite I had to learn a different set of contortions to get in and out! I heartily concur with your comments that driving this kind of car is an "occasion" and there always seems to be some audience participation with waves and smiles coming from pedestrians and other drivers. Thanks for sharing this drive with us.

Great story and credit to the young fella for carrying on his granddad's project, he's made it a lovely example. You quite suit the posh image too , but I see you more as an XJS or TR6 man, shirt unbuttoned and an ashtray sized gold medallion 😂

@@ProjectNigel maybe dress accordingly for the car you're in? When I had a few old XJ Jags, I always put on some smart clobber, a few gold rings and smoked a slim panatella. In my FIAT 127 Sport usually a Sergio Tacchini polo shirt. S-class Mercs called for fatter cigars , light blue shirt and a dour unsmiling Germanic look on my face 😂

Back in the sixties and seventies, evolution of man had diverged. In the United States, genus fatblobman was emerging who need chrome plated cars the size of whales, V8 engines to move them and softly suspended by thousands of elastic bands. In Europe, genus MontyPyhonman would appear, accompanied by small engined cars which largely dispensed with the need for springs or brakes. These would be fun to drive but frequently broke down leading to the hilarious antics of drivers administering a 'good thrashing' with nearby tree branches. Eventually rust caused the decline of both genera and homo-Rylan emerged. In today's video, Mustard acknowledges homo-Rylan by wearing his posh hotel wedding guest shirt while trying to fit in to the charming old diminutive flat-cap era sports car. In many ways an epexegesis of the way the car design has changed to meet the human condition. In summary, what a brilliant car! 😀 (not so sure about the shirt! 😆)

Bit of help for exiting a Midget from a old driver and owner: Use your opposite hand. From the UK driver's seat, it's easier to reach it with your left hand than your right. Having the top up (or hardtop in this case) makes it harder to get in and out, and the owner is an ideal size and age to get in and out! I'd feel safer with the head rests on - I've been in more accidents where my car has been rear-ended than I have any other kind. And a loud horn is a safety feature in a tiny car! Curious where he sourced his Toyota gearbox? Mine has a Datsun 5 speed, and I'm always curious about where I may want to get a second if mine fails.

I had one back in the day. Yes you are right it is cramped. Sat in it the steering wheel is offset and so are the pedals. Even me at my 5-9 and (at the time) slim build. I would get out of it looking like Quosimodo. It's an A35 with a sports body poorly grafted on.

Fifth gear? Does it have a Ford type 9 gearbox? Popular mod because these things were very undergeared.

Only undergeared for motorways. In its natural habitat of twisty country lanes you're meant to be revving like fun. We all used Ford boxes until the supply ran out (they used to be £50 a pop from scrapyards). People use Datsun, Toyota, Mazda ones now. All good.

While this car is unique I would not want to drive a car that small with no roll bar , that can flip over , that low where it can pinned under or pinned over another larger vehicle . Otherwise it looks like fun for a country drive in very light traffic on a sunny day .
