MG Owners Club Visit

Thanks for this lovely video. In the old days, over 15 years ago I owned a company that was specialised in repairing and restoring MGB's and MG C's. One day I became a customer from the MGOC and visited them every year after our visit to the Goodwood Reival. The spares were delivered every fortnight to Holland by Steve in a huge van. Service has always been amazing.

I was a founder member of the MGOC and knew Roche before he established the club when he was working for Pitney Bowes . . . I remember evenings of stuffing envelopes with the first newsletters at his house with our then wives and, a magazine art director at the time, designing the logo for "Enjoying MG" . . . happy days. Back then, I owned 1 MGB, 3 MGB GTs, 1 MGC GT and a wonderful MGB GT V8. Roche and Richard were good mates for over ten years and, now living in Vancouver, I miss them and the good old MGOC days.

I had the opportunity to tour the facility over 20 years ago during a trip to England. My wife and I were guided about by a lovely young fellow, I don't recall his name, sorry. I was especially interested being a long time B owner. I bought a 74 MGB new in Canada and still have it, now 49 years. My Harvest Gold chrome bumper car is still original factory paint, soft top, seat upholstery and most other bits with the exception of consumables. It has covered more than 100,000 miles crossing Canada return twice. My modest collection of MGs includes a 67 MGB/GT which I bought and restored myself. Recently I have added a 96 MGF RHD to my garage, sure it is quite plasticy, but I love it. A mate of mine and I are currently restoring, from the ground up, a 47 MGTC. We have a long way to go but what a joy it will be to drive around the back roads near home just east of Vancouver, B.C. I shall continue to watch your videos, they are very well done and most enjoyable.

I was a little surprised to hear there are only around 20,000 members; I can recall in its heyday there were over 50,000. The MGCC now has more than that but I think the BMW Car Club of America is now the biggest in the world. Incidentally, I visited Swavesey back when the RV8 was current - can’t remember a thing about the headquarters but I definitely remember having a ride in their Oxford Blue RV8 with Richard Monk!

I bought my 1973 MGB/GT new and now have 143,068 miles on the original engine. i have kept up on the appearance and the car looks good in its second British Racing Green paint and the reskined buckets. I think I would like to join a group of like-minded madmen.

Thanks for your comment - that's a shame and not the same as my experience. I've always found them super-helpful either in person, on the phone or via e-mail... Did you mention it to anyone there?

Yes I told the manager when I was contacted for feedback. Unfortunately this has happened twice with the same individual. The first time I actually told him about his attitude but received no apology from this person. The manager did, however, apologise. Some of my friends in our local group have had similar poor experiences and many will not spend their money there. It only takes one ignorant person to spoil things for a business. In my opinion the person in question should not be behind the counter dealing with customers.
