I know that Cao Cao is portrayed as a villain in the novel, but in this series, he seems pretty wise and diplomatic, IMO. The only difference between him and Liu Bei is ambition; Cao Cao seems to still have a pretty strong moral compass (even though he killed his uncle).

They were 1)trained by Cao Cao's officers and 2)they were the best of the best. The one's that actually survived after giving a good fight.
